Collections Video: Great Seal Pine Tree

  • A great pine tree is featured in a number of symbols that represent Vermont: the state flag, its official seal, and coat of arms. That tree wasn't plucked out of someone's imagination: in 1791, Ira Allen, brother of Ethan Allen, designed an official seal for the state to authenticate documents, and he included a great pine tree that was growing near the property of Governor Thomas Chittenden in Arlington.
    This item in our collection is a piece of that tree, which came down in a large windstorm in 1978. It's a representative example of the symbolic tree and a tangible part of the founding of the state of Vermont.
