This lady is full of crap, and she is playing you. SA has one of the highest unemployment rates in the world and it mainly affects the Native South African people not the whites. The wealth gap between the two races is very disproportion and let's not talk about the land ownership. Land that was taken from the Native people. Nelson Mandela was a tool used by the power structure. He was not the same man prior to going to jail. You need to go and listen to his Rivonia trail speech. That's not the same Mandela that left prison. Mandela is commercialized by Whites and the Black South African gatekeepers just like Martin Luther King is in the USA. All you hear in the USA about King is the I have a dream speech but not his last speech, I've been to the mountaintop speech. The speech that got him assassinated. Back to Mandel, He was not going to be the president with Chris Hani still around. That's another story you need to learn about. You are talking to the wrong person if you want to know the truth. The difference between the white colonizers in SA and the other African countries is that they came to stay. You have a white only town in SA. You have white people stating their ancestors are from SA which is BS.

South Africa is still deeply divided, but the one thing the country has mastered is the art of tolerance. It is an underrated skill. It is not just a black-and-white issue either. Muslims, for example, can practice their faith here without fear of reprisals or judgment. Certainly, when I was in school, their religious rights and practices were always accommodated without any fuss, and the same attitude really applies across the board.
We also have a very large Indian community, and the country is honestly enriched for having them here. And when you think about it, every other African country would not be as accepting of whites in their midst, especially after a program like Apartheid. In fact, other countries on this continent judge black South Africans and call us "happy slaves".
Many whites from Zimbabwe and Mozambique have now settled in South Africa. We could argue about whether they were forced out or whether they left of their own accord, but it is clear that they feel more comfortable and safer here than anywhere else on the continent.
But the real gem in South Africa is the cooperation of the so-called official black tribes. The Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Swati, Pedi, Venda, Tsonga, and Ndebele. We are all very different people and despite the Apartheid government's attempts to split us, we have found each other in a more meaningful way than ever before. Most black South Africans communicate effectively in about six languages. Some speak all 11 (including English and Afrikaans).
There are forces trying their utmost to divide those black tribes now, and despite some minor social media successes, the center is holding. And I believe that language element is a big part of what is holding the country together. We aren't seeing the civil wars breaking out all over this continent.

Her ancestors were not mere, "settlers," they pursued Settler colonialism and ended up ruling over an entire nation of indigenous true Africans. If their start in SA was wrong to begin with, why would black South Africans respect their wealthy descendants who were born into ill gotten wealth taken from a country that was not their own? She mentions everyone coming together for sports as if sports means something to an entire nation of people who suffered at the hands of her ancestors, an entire nation of people who have nothing financially in comparison to her who was born into ill gotten wealth.

Absolutely agree. After her ancestors murdered many of the indigenous people to obtain their land they placed a democratic system in the country and took control of the resources. This was actually done for the future generations like this woman to be comfortable and subjugate the black people all the while controlling the economic system.

She’s telling her perspective and her truth and you can’t blame coop he’s only doing what he’s supposed to do. (As someone who doesn’t know South Africa) Which is gain knowledge and information. I didn’t agree with a lot of what she said about the racism in South Africa but not every white person from SA is racist.
Listen carefully to what she’s saying instead of reacting emotionally.
Thanks for the video Coop very informative.
Racism is still rife in South Africa her experience is her experience alone but it’s not a great representation of the many attitudes that white South Africans carry towards the black people of the land. You need to get the black perspective as well Coop. So you can get a well rounded perspective of race in South Africa but I appreciate her coming on your channel and speaking so openly about it.
Lastly remember as an outsider we don’t know much about to the history of South Africa our knowledge only stretches so far he is gonna have some questions about race because racism it’s a reality that we face in America all the time. Overt and Covert.
Depending on the class and how much they need you and how much they can use you or benefit from you, you may experience different levels of racism. Sometimes Your class determines the level of racism you may receive. You might never experience racism because you’re from the USA and you have money. This is my personal opinion from being a foreigner in South Africa. This is how I see it but somebody might see it differently.

We have so many different cultures and languages, but one of the most disturbing things is how people hide behind symbols like the Springbok to avoid addressing deeper issues. The reality is that racism, tribalism, and other forms of division are everywhere. We have positive terms like "rainbow nation" and "ubuntu," but on the ground, a lot of unresolved issues persist. While we all pray for unity and togetherness, it feels like there’s a lot of denial, with a choice to highlight the good side instead of confronting the harsh realities. One thing about white people is that they often refuse to acknowledge that racism still exists, instead focusing on symbols like the Springbok or figures like Mandela. On the other hand, Black people rarely admit to that we have tribalism issues but are quick to speak about the injustices inflicted by white people. if we address racism, inequality and tribalism without hiding behind things, this country will be the most chilled place to live.

There are a lot of people that criticise her … you need to understand her perspective. Most of the apartheid laws ended in 90 when she was 14. Most white kids lived in white suburbs and never left and saw how black South Africans lived. This was one of the successes of the apartheid regime keeping people separated, and ignorant of each other.
I am white and come from a very well known family in the eastern cape. My parents were very liberal during apartheid, they hated the nationalist government. They educated me about apartheid and why it’s wrong. I can honestly say I never heard them say anything racist against black people, quite the opposite really. My grandfather father was definitely a racist, but if he were alive he would be 120 years old. He was a dichotomy as he understood Africans very well and respected their ways (he lived in a very rural area) but he saw them as different and in a world of their own.
On the other hand my dad had a cousin who was member of the ANC when it was banned and spent time as a political prisoner for actions she took against the state. My dad and his father were fluent Xhosa speakers and pretty good Zulu speakers as well… this is something I wqs really proud of and saw how different they could interact with black people and tried my best to learn the languages.
I just say all this to say it’s complicated. I also agree with her that politicians and the media
have for a long time tried to play races against one another. The reality is a lot different on the ground.

I think that you are trying to calm the waters especially when you say that you know as much as you say you know. She "knows" about the British and Afrikaners which happened before apartheid, before she was born but does not know what happened in subsequent years? She should have steered away from the politics if they make her uncomfortable.

She has her own community of people and I assume none of them are negatively affected by racism.
She probably never even been to a black persons house.

There is still racial division, we are not united. She is telling you her ideal situation, not reality. The European settlers still suffer from a superiority complex. The vast socio-economic inequalities are still a sore point for natives of this land. The mistreatment from Europeans is still fresh on our minds.

Fam, as an African American we consider you one of ours and you're home here. But my advice is don't get too much on politics because it's a sensitive issue and rather speak to a variety of Black people so you form an informed perspective. Most things said by this White lady are very inaccurate and certain nuances which you can't obviously pick up are racist and reflect the entitlement and denialism held by most Whites. Why you chose to start your exploration of South African culture and history through the lens of a European is startling to me. There is racism in South Africa and leaders like Mandela were actually threatened in coming into democracy not to transform economic patterns. Very disappointing vlog in my view.

You have a very negative agenda and it's unfortunate. You could focus on so many positive aspects about South Africa yet you intentionally come to our country to dig up negativity that is hidden 6 feet underground. We have such an amazing country yet you've deliberately come here to perpetuate this Western propaganda.

While we are open to Americans and other foreigners who come to our country legally, this is one of those Americans that we don't want nor need in our country. They are the kind who want to rip open old wounds that we have already healed from. These are also the people who say that Nelson Mandela was wrong for wanting to build an inclusive society and wanting white people to stay as fellow citizens. Some black Americans come to reconnect to their African roots and appreciate what we have managed to build. Then there are these guys who come to do whatever he is doing so he can paint our country in a bad light for clicks and views. If he wants an African country with no white people, why doesn't he just go to Zimbabwe or Nigeria. In fact, there are many others to choose from. We certainly won't miss him here.

Oh my goodness. There is obviously still a lot of ignorance regarding South African History and Apartheid. Sadly. If we educated ourselves on our history and acknowledged the truth of the past we will be able to move forward better as a nation.
Apartheid was evil. And I say that as a white South African

South Africa is still divided. If you still have a Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mitchell's Plain, Manenburg apart from your Camps Bay, Sea Point. Then you can say South Africa is liberated. Unity during a rugby game is cool but it is just a plaster on festered wounded.
