Manfred here, I am flattered that you guys would spend all that time discussing these albums. I have not listened to these albums for years, I keep feeling dissatisfied with them. There is only one Album I can ever listen to from beginning to end and that is Plains Music in 1991. This album was done largely in South Africa, and is a partial answer to your comments about Manfred returning to South Africa, I did go back, and I like it very much, it is the only Album I ever listen to, but no one knows it at all. It is laid back and nothing like anything else I ever did.. Generally speaking my comments is that you both underrate and overrate what I have done. I am delighted to hear you enjoying my keyboard playing. I am not a real artist in that I don”t write or sing, And I managed to have a career in a world full of really great artists, it is real miracle. My own analysis is that we are a second rate Band, but since the numbers go down to 100, 2nd rate is pretty good.

Manfred, thanks so much for chiming in! Happy to see you here. I think you'll find by the comments of many that we all feel you and your band were extremely underrated, and we look at many of these albums quite fondly. You are a musical treasure and we thank for you for all the great music over the years!

Pete and Manfred I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Earth Band live. I saw the band twice once opening for Uriah Heep I believe it was the Solar Fire album. I didn't even realize until they played Mighty Quinn that it was 'That" Manfred Mann. Second time I saw the band at an outdoor festival in Germany with Genesis. Very nice shows both times. By the way my favorite album is Nightingales and Bombers. Love it!! Thanks again.

It’s the start of the 80s and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band is touring “Chance”. My friends and I are gathered expectantly in The Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road in London. The lights go down, dry ice flows over the front rows, and magnesium flares temporarily blind the unwary. And then the music starts...Steve Waller, his rotund frame balanced precariously on a suddenly fragile riser, appears in an impossibly battered and huge stovepipe hat, singing one of the great concert openers “Hello, Hello!”(a track sadly consigned to the cutting room floor during the album’s recording). For two hours MMEB grabbed us by the throat and didn’t release its grip for even one fleeting second. Musical heroes in the then-divided Germany but under-appreciated in the UK and USA, on this night before a sell-out crowd they were kings of the world. All their many and musically diverse albums have merit. Some are very much of their time and should be listened to without prejudice...for those who may cringe at some of Jethro Tull’s excursions into frippery(“The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles”?), give “Frog” a try and hear how it can be done. Spoken word over largely just strumming but utterly disarmingly charming and mesmeric. A real tonic! Get the unreservedly recommended career CD box set mastered by Peter Reynolds(Wishbone Ash, Gentle Giant) who sprinkles his sonic fairy dust over their œuvre to his usual great effect. Pete...you need the “Messin’” t-shirt. One of many five star albums but whose cover art is truly for these troubled times.

Dave Flett was in Thin Lizzy after Gary Moore left during the Black Rose tour. Originally Midge Ure (from Ultravox!!!) stepped in for a few dates until they got Flett in for a good portion of the tour. As far as I know he only toured with them and never recorded. I seem to remember that he was keen to join permanently but Phil Lynott eventually decided to go with Snowy White.
I think Chris Thompson is a great vocalist and should be much better known than he is. I love his singing on For You on the Budapest album. I remember playing that live LP to death when it came out, haven't heard it for a few years but I think I'll put it on in a minute. It's from their 80s "Arena Rock" days and I reckon the band would have been huge if they'd maintained it for a few more albums. I think that Manfredd Mann is one of those musicians that likes to keep changing it up and although he has a core fan base he never quite made it to the highest level because of this apparent lack of direction and identity.
Their cover versions are great and they have done a few songs that I prefer to the originals, especially the early Springsteen stuff like For You, Spirits i the night etc.I reckon that Blinded by the light is one of the all time great covers too, although I think the all time best cover is Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower but Blinded is right up there.

Nice to hear Manfred getting his dues. The band made some great music and Manfred's keyboards were always tasteful and creative. He was never flash for the sake of it but gave the music depth and colour. He had some marvellous musicians around him too. Hi Pete
Thanks for this. A band that is starting to be lost in the mists of time.
I got nito MMEB with Solar Fire in 1974 and started to collect the then back catalogue pretty quickly. They were a band who were constantly touring and I probably saw them about 6 or 7 times in about three years between 1974 and 1977. But the venues did get bigger during that time.
I always thought MMEB were a little late to the Prog Rock party. Bands like Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Genesis had established themselves by 1971 and probably on their second wave. So it was always a catch up exercise for them which was a shame. But those 1970's and early 1980's albums are all really good. I gave up after I heard but did not own Criminal Tango. Perhaps if Manfred Mann had gone straight from the original Manfred Mann pop band to Earth Band without the diversion via Manfred Mann Chapter Three things may have been different.
    My favs (as of today)
1- Solar Fire (Always has been my favourite album)
    2 - The Good Earth
    3 - Messin'
    4 - Roaring Silence
    5 - Nightingales and Bombers
    6 - Glorified Magnified
    7 - Watch

Somewhere in that five or six year period I explored backwards and found Nightengales and. Bombers. What a great album! Now after all these years I’m going to have to go back even deeper and check out Messin, The Good Earth and Solar Fire. Thanks guys for reigniting my love for this band, great show!

  • @progmeup
    @progmeup 3 роки тому +2

First of all, I think Manfred Mann is one of the best keyboardists in rock. His personal touch on the Minimoog is recognizable and he managed to get some really emotional solos out of it. You can get technique out of other people but he's got a feel for the music not many have. And the Earth Band is a powerful machine, almost in all its incarnations. You need to hear some live recordings to get the full effect. I saw them three times, the last one was just a few months before the pandemic struck.
I have all the band's albums thanks to the 40th Anniversary box set and I'm commenting on everything in the order of mention.
I quite like Masque... not always successful but always interesting. Certainly not run-of-the-mill 80s pop. And you do have Mick Rogers on vocals doing a fantastic Jack Bruce impression on We're Going Wrong. Downside: The drum programming, never Manfred's strongest suit.
Soft Vengeance is the last Manfred album I really like and I will fight for it. It has lots of great songs and (sadly for the last time IMO) heart-rending synthesizer solos. The production softened it out a bit too much - the live recordings and outtakes often had more power. Maybe it's also unbalanced between the longer Soft period and the shorter Vengeance group of songs... but Shelter From the Storm is fantastic, as are Miss You and Manfred's own Adults Only. I guess it helps that I'm a pop fan too.
2006 is my least favourite. I hate the drum sound - dreadful, and the programming totally ruins a potentially good Mars. Several songs are short on melody and too long although there are some high points, but also real low points like Independent Woman. I think whatever Manfred tried doing here, he did better on Lone Arranger. And Chris' voice by this time was starting to sound really raspy.
Criminal Tango is their poppiest one. Hey Bulldog is one of Manfred's few misfires - the Beatles original is way cooler. And Crossfire should not have been turned into an instrumental, the later unearthed vocal version is much better. But I LOVE Killer on the Loose with its insane interlude (should be a live song!) and You Got Me Right Through the Heart with some great Mick Rogers guitar.
Debut very good, just a bit too much of a stylistic mishmash and tailing off at the end. You can tell that they were finding their feet and that there was something before (the unreleased Steppin' Sideways which later came out on the Odds & Sods box set).
Glorified Magnified lacking power and focus for me, even if it's more classic Earth Band sounding. I do love the dissonance of Our Friend George.
Somewhere in Afrika is an album I love, even if the concept could've been executed even better (segues!!). Great production too. I read that Manfred was not happy about having to talk about politics in the wake of the album.
Chance is an album that always slightly disappointed me because it has so many singers (what is this, The Alan Parsons Project?) and because the songs on side 2 don't really convince me. I REALLY don't get why the b-side A Fool I Am was not included - fantastic song. Keyboard work is amazing throughout the album.
Messin' is one of the big ones. 'Nuff said. Just a shame that the vocal intro to Black and Blue was inadvertently left off the 1998 remaster and that the later remaster (which restored it) sounds worse. It's funny that Messin' (about environmental destruction) was originally a Chapter Three track!
Angel Station I love for the mysterious atmosphere and production. I just think it has the same problem as some other MMEB albums... the last two songs don't impress me as much as the rest. But up til then it's fantabulous throughout. Anthony Moore co-producing helped to make this one sound unusual.
The Good Earth lacks melodies for me. I hate Launching Place (Mick's vocal sounds awful to me), the title track is a bit jumpy between the sections. Earth Hymn (based on a Vivaldi theme I think) stands out as the one track I really love.
Watch is simply the pinnacle of everything.
The Roaring Silence is almost as good. Their most majestic sounding album and lump-in-your-throat-what-the-heck-was-THAT solos on This Side of Paradise. Questions is sort of an original but based on ideas by Schubert and Beethoven.
Solar Fire is the pinnacle of the Mick Rogers era. And ultimate proof that the band's original material could be really strong as well. Father of Day is a Dylan song but the instrumental voyages are all the band's, and they're bewitching.
Nightingales & Bombers is a good album but I wouldn't put it in my top 3. It's really dark but I find it has too many instrumentals, and not all of them are as good as Countdown or the title track which seems to have influenced several Rush songs! (Quit Your Low Down Ways was originally only on the US version, so I don't really think of it when I think of the album.)
    So my list is:
    Watch
    The Roaring Silence
    Solar Fire
    Angel Station
    Somewhere in Afrika
    Nightingales & Bombers
    Messin'
    Manfred Mann's Earth Band
    Soft Vengeance
    Glorified Magnified
    The Good Earth
    Masque
    Criminal Tango
    2006
I quite like Plains Music and Lone Arranger but I find it hard to compare them to the Earth Band.

Started to get seriously into this band in 1979 with the Angel Station album and it is still my favourite. For me Chris Thompson is the best vocalist, but Mick Rogers is no slouch. I think the band developed a fuller sound when Chris joined, using two guitarists where previously it had just been Mick. Good as he was - and still is - he couldn't be two! Also, they went slightly more rock mainstream and a little away from the progressive stuff they had done in their formative years. One thing is for sure - they have always put out interesting stuff. And in my humble opinion, no-one interprets songs as consistently well as Mr Mann has done over a career that has spanned almost sixty years. Thanks for doing this Pete - I really enjoyed it. Best wishes from Australia!

What an amazing forgotten band! Manfred Mann himself was the master at Mini Moog synthesizer leads which rapidly cut through with dynamic pitch bending and modulation. He gave cats like Rick Wakeman and Jan Hammer a run for their money. Certainly one of the best. He had a great band too. I'm personally partial to when the band included Chris Hamlet Thomson, Colin Pattenden, Chris Slade, David Flett and Manfred however the early albums with Mick Rogers were great too. Regrettably, I stopped listening to MMEB shortly after Manfred fired his band (post Watch) and used mostly ad hoc studio musicians. In any case the following are my favorites:
    1. Roaring Silence
    2. Watch
    3. Nightingales and Bombers
    4. Solar Fire
    5. That Good Earth

I just read last night where Aerosmith’s Tom Hamilton discussed playing bass with Thin Lizzy at a festival 2 years ago when they were sandwiched between Blackmore’s Rainbow and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and I thought to myself “what a great 3 band package”. I only know the hits and did see them live once back in the day, but it was a real nostalgia trip to see all those great album sleeves that were so familiar from my visits to the record shop. I try to get into to some of the nu-prog stuff - Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Steven Wilson and so on, and there's a lot that I enjoy, but I always find it more rewarding to unearth stuff that I never got into at the time, for example I've only started listening to VDGG and Gentle Giant in the last few years, and it somehow has this ability to transport me back to those days as if I had heard them then. Will have a dig into MMEB.

Pete, you always say that this is a show for heavy metal, prog and jazz rock fans. To tell the truth I miss some ranking shows on jazz-rock bands. My suggestion: Weather Report, Elektric Band, Herbie Hancock, Allan Holdsworth, Tribal Tech, Pat Metheny, Jean Luc-Ponty, Billy Cobham, Vital Tech Tones, Brand X ... (I know many of these acts have tons of albums, but you can always select your favourite ten or so.)

I expected Solar Fire as one of the top albums. I didn't expect Nightingales and Bombers that high, but I'm happy that you rate it as I would do.
It's just the Roaring Silence album, that I would rate higher, as No 1. Sadly it is without Mr Rogers, whom I love as singer as well as guitarist.
But in the end Roaring Silence for me it is the perfect compromise between the older progy stuff and the later Pop Sounds. You can even play it when people are present, that do not share our - let me say - weird taste in music ...
Thanx for your in depth view to the music of MMEB.
Sadly enough Mr Lubowitz never seemed to be happy or satisfied with the music he made. May be it get's him to a better mood knowing that some people were pulled through weird times by his music. The album Messin' pulls me through boaring homeworks in the early 80th. Some years later Roaring Silence let me overcome my army time.
In the end MMEB is essential for the 70th Rock Music, at least in my point of view.

A vastly underrated band with a lot of covers but as you've correctly stated, they changed the songs completely and made them their own and better than the originals. Very interesting show, gentlemen! Thanks. This is really informative - the only MMEB records that I know really well were Chance and Angel Station, which I played to death! When the 40th Anniversary Box Set came out about about a decade ago, I bought it but just listened to those two albums. You have given me some incentive to explore the whole set - thank-you! I don't think you are really being fair to the band as to their "choices" in the 1980's and beyond. The record industry in the 80's made some brutal choices with some bands that were popular in the 1970's and I don't think Manfred Mann had enough sales influence to do what they wanted. As a matter of fact, I think that Somewhere in Afrika was the last album to receive domestic release in Canada. Generally speaking, prog rock bands all made some questionable choices in the 1980's - Yes, Genesis, and Rush all changed their sounds in the mid-80's for the worse. Too bad....

The 80s-Trap: Manfred Mann was one of those musicians who brought the use of synthesizers into rock. In the sixties and at the beginning of the seventies synthesizers like computers were huge machines and you could use them for huge compositions in terms of rock music. The earth seemed too little for these arrangements and so the artists explored space with silver machines. By the beginning of the 80s computers had become small and personal and began to take over the world. Where is my place in this bright future?, we heard Manfred Mann ask and he gave us the answer with lies (through the 80s).

Their later output isn't my cup of tea, but live they are absolutely amazing. It's a shame they don't tour America, but rest assured, they sound fantastic even at their respective ages. Nightingales and Bombers I also heard at the time, only one admittedly, not much impressed, bought Machine Head instead. Can anyone blame me?!!!! After I've digested The Roaring Silence ( which I've now heard three or four times and loved that hit since it was on the charts) I will listen again to Nightingales and Bombers and that album which has such a good rep on the net, Solar Fire.
