Finding the asymptotes

- 👉 Learn how to find the vertical/horizontal asymptotes of a function. An asymptote is a line that the graph of a function approaches but never touches. The vertical asymptote is a vertical line that the graph of a function approaches but never touches. To find the vertical asymptote(s) of a rational function, we set the denominator equal to 0 and solve for x.
The horizontal asymptote is a horizontal line which the graph of the function approaches but never crosses (though they sometimes cross them). A rational function has a horizontal asymptote of y = 0 when the degree of the numerator is less than the degree of the denominator. A rational function has a horizontal asymptote of y = c, (where c is the quotient of the leading coefficient of the numerator and that of the denominator) when the degree of the numerator is equal to the degree of the denominator. A rational function has no horizontal asymptote if the degree of the numerator is greater than the degree of the denominator.

True story: my online math teacher doesn't actually teach, and the textbook is too confusing. She just sent me your channel to learn, so I guess you're my online teacher? You do a great job though, thanks.
Exact same here, even when I get something wrong, she tells me "Thats incorrect" and I gotta figure it out myself lol
Inform her to your school, what kind of shitty teacher is that? If your school doesn't take action, then inform ministry of education.
when you trynna solve math without guidance, not even a clue about where to start and where to end
2020 is the year when ur real teacher send u a link so u can learn from another online teaher
That is so sad wow I'm sorry
This is literally better than my online class made by a whole team of math teachers.
yeah happy to be able to help you Oliver!
@@brianmclogan thanks
This is 2 years ago before the lockdown. Did you just predict our daily routine online damn
I can't wait til we go back to physical class rooms. I used to be a straight A student In high-school and last quarter in College. But now that we're having to do everything online, I'm having a hard time focusing and my grades are slipping.
Bro??? U literally went through what everyone went through but 3 years before. Magic
Calc exam tomorrow. This is legit the best demonstration of a concept I have ever seen. All the questions that arose while I was watching seemed to be immediately answered as you broke down the steps
This is Precalculus aka College Algebra + trig. The creator of this video probably is super happy, but graphing irrational expressions is a college algebra concept that should have been grasped before Calc 1.
Although just like me, maybe you already took Precalculus and needed a refresher of Precalculus before taking your Calc exam. Why didn't i think of that before I commented? That's probably what it is. I had originally thought your college might have misplaced you.
I always find myself reviewing stuff from Precalculus and intermediate algebra since math is not exactly like riding a bike.
I've never taken Calc and now it's been 6 years since I have taken Precalculus.
However, it's great this video helped you 2 years ago. And now that's been 2 full years, you are probably a senior in college or a junior in college having completed Calc 1, 2, and maybe 3.
I think math can be cool to study when you're not in a class.
Really happy to help you along. Now on the bigger and better things right?
yes master
Thank you so much sir for solving many examples.
Yes. The best 👌
This is from 8 years ago, but it is so relevant, YOU ARE amazingggg. I have my own online teacher. Thank you, sir.
9 years later but it helped out more than my online classes, thanks!
God bless you Brian. I'm taking college algebra now, and to my horror, my professor started our semester by telling us "I'm retiring. This will be my very last semester." Needless to say, he does not go through the process with the same mellow pace and care that you do. Thanks for your videos!
This dude is THE BEST math teacher on UA-cam his stuff just makes perfect sense and they are always quick.
I know you made these a decade ago and there's a great chance you won't see this, but your lectures are great and easily understood. Great work, thank you. Taking math over the summer would've been nightmarish at this point without your video lectures to help.
yes spread the word, I am making these videos for people like you
Finally someone who can actually teach
The way the the students are made to understand the asymptotes is superb. By learning through this type of visuals an average student will become a master. I was thought these asymptotes in my first year of engineering in 1958-59. I am very happy that students at undergraduate level are becoming very knowledgeable and able to develop faster than our times. This scientific type of teaching deserves great appreciation. Keep it up. D.S.Sastry 1962 graduate in mechanical engineering from college of engineering Kakinada.Andhra university.
I love how I watched 4 of your videos before a test and now completely understand everything for it while the teacher who I see multiple times a week couldn’t explain it to me at all
11 years later and this is helping me o n my college calculus exam tomorrow! Thanks for the concise explanation, it's more useful than anything I've been taught by my college professors
I’m taking Online Classes right now due to Corona. And this is so helpful!!! I have a test tomorrow and I was so worried. I have an hour video explaining this, I was really confused. and with just 7 minutes of this video I no longer am. Thank You SO MUCH!!!

Dude, you've completely saved my ass in pre-cal. I'm coming back to school after a fifteen year break and I would be sinking without these videos! Thank you!
Taking an online, learn at your own pace with a textbook course. I don't fully get it until I watch a couple of youtube videos. Thanks Brian.
I'm using ALEKS which often has explanations that are more complex than they need to be so I come here every time. Thank you this video is and the others on this channel have been a life saver for me.
I have watched a lot of videos about this topic and none of them made sense to me. I became really confused until I see your video that explains all in a very simple and understandable way. Thank you so much !!!
Bro... you have helped me ease my way through College Algebra. Thanks for explaining everything in a "watered down" form!

Thank you so much I’ve been having trouble with horizontal asymptotes for this entire unit in my calc class and this immediately helped so much.
After several weeks of my class = confused. After this 7mins = learned. ;'3

I am taking an intensive pre-calc class over the summer and you are the only thing that is saving me. Thank you very much, good sir.
you are my favorite teacher! literally, my real teachers give no attention to the small steps and you do the opposite.
insane to think that i was ~5 years old when this came out. im watching this video now feeling blessed 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 love you forever
My teacher always moves so fast in class, she is more focused on solving as many practice problems as possible that she forgets to teach us stuff like this that makes it 1000000000x easier. Thank you!! I have been doing pretty bad in math and your videos always help me
10 years and this video is still helping people! Thanks!

I come here every time before a test. Why can’t my teachers teach like this on zoom.
What grade are you in?
@@sithedge2444 Bro he's watching a vid on finding asymptotes, so he's probably in 9th grade

I watched over 5 videos on the topic but your video would be enough If I had watched it first. I mean, I would not have to watch other videos. really like your channel and subsribed. Thanks!

Ever since online classes , I don’t even bother with lectures . I’ll rather get a quick Lesson on UA-cam than waste three hours on a boring online lecture .

I learn more by Mr.Brian than I did in 9 weeks of college algebra
Boom!!
I think I might actually understand this now?? Thank you!!
Very good explanation, thanks so much!
I learned more from this than my own pre calc teacher ;-;
When the top power is equal to the bottom power do you divide the tot coefficient by the bottom or the bottom by the top?
The top coefficient by the bottom, hence his 3/4 example at 5:56
@@Theglowingkey thank you! I watched it twice and missed that part he sneaked in both times!
