Finding the Slant Asymptote

- 👉 Learn how to find the slant/oblique asymptotes of a function. A slant (oblique) asymptote usually occurs when the degree of the polynomial in the numerator is higher than the degree of the polynomial in the denominator. To find the slant asymptote of a rational function, we divide the numerator by the denominator using either long division or synthetic division. The quotient obtained when the numerator is divided by the denominator is the slant asymptote of the function.

Why did he add the 0 on top of the -1x during the Long division part
its because there was nothing but x cubed at the top, so (if you'll imagine a number line, that might help) when the x cubed was subtracted from the x cubed, you got 0. However, you still had the -1x, so it was effectively 0 - (-1x).
So the slant is x?
I did the limit method of f(x) - x and f(x) /x I got the wrong answer why?

I am taking the math cset next week and there is a practice problem that states which of the following is an equation for the slant asymptote of f(x)= x^3 -1 /(divided by) x^2 and the answer is y=x BUT I CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHY!!!! HEEEEEELP
do long division with the given rational function. You will get the answer x+1/x^2. As he said in the video, don't worry about the remainder just the divisor without it, which is x. Therefore the answer is y=x
0 minus negative 1 is positive x???
subtracting a negative creates a positive

There’s probably a hole
There's no asymptote because an asymptote must be linear by definition. But, the graph will always approach the function that is the quotient of the two polynomials (without the remainder). So, if the quotient is x^2, then the graph will approach the parabola x^2, but again, it's not an asymptote, because it's not linear.

Why don’t you use standard terminology for numerator, denominator, dividend, etc.? I find that using standard terminology and pronunciation increases student understanding?
