FISHING WITH THE SAMSON LONGCAST | UK BASS LURE FISHING | PART 1 | SAMSON FISHING

- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Recently, I got my hands on the Samson Longcast lure rod. This rod is 12ft long and has a rating of 30 - 100g. These lightweight, powerful lure rods are designed to handle big fish from the shore. I'd been excited about fishing with this rod, so once I had my hands on it, I went out to target some bass here in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
This video is made up of 3 short sessions where I use surface lures, including the Shad also from Samson fishing. I'd manage to find some fish on each outing, although, that big one is still out there waiting to be found!
For any information regarding this rod and the range of Samson lures, head over to their website at the link below.
As always, thanks for watching and see you on the next one 🎣

Top stuff as always Cal thanks for the upload.
Thanks Marco, appreciate it mate 👍🏼
Nice demo of the rod Cal the the only draw back for me is travelling with 2 six foot lengths bit awkward , think a 3 piece or 4 would be more travel friendly also which version you using theres an XH one too ? Cheers
Yeah I see your point. Maybe in the future they’d consider making a 4 piece rod which would be a lot easier for travelling. I use the standard version not the XH. There is also an even heavier version now which I believe has a casting weight of up to 250g! That’s way out of my league though!😂 Cheers 👍🏼
Awesome presentation.
Lovely rod and lure. You are a lucky boy! Great fish too. 👍🐟
Cheers Nigel mate 👍🏼🎣
👏👏I have a 10' that i use for bigger metals and longer-range beach fishing. 🎣🎣
Nice lures. And great catches. And yes your right when the sun sets its best to get off the Rocky shores.
Cheers Jeff 👍🏼
Fantastic way to christen the new rod Cal, the rod looks the business mate, hopefully get in to some double figure bass like Grant do in Portugal haha. i wouldn't mind having the exact set up as your 😀tight lines mate 👍
Cheers Hakan. Yeah Grant catches some ridiculous bass out in Portugal. I hope to hook into a good one at some point with it 🎣
Great upload Cal, I've got the same rod paired with a Shimano spheros 5000xg, use it in really rough seas here in Cornwall, the Shad and the Bomb my go to lures 55g to 70g fished and caught decent bass in conditions my "normal" set up just wouldn't handle.
Awesome mate. You have some great conditions over in Cornwall for some heavier bass fishing. I’m liking the 3500 slammer on the rod at the moment although I’d beef it up a bit if I was going abroad to target other species. I have some of the 45g and 50g shads to try out also, hopefully I’ll have some luck with those too. Cheers for watching 👍🏼
Hopefully MICKS get the shad in soon!! Those rods will be great for beach casting as well!!
Yeah I'm waiting to for the right time to do some surf fishing with this rod, it'll be perfect!
Good upload,I would love to get one of those Samson 12fts at some point, I use a 11ft Spanish lubina/ sea bass lure rod here in 🇪🇸,the long rods for shore fishing is the way to go ,more control/ lifting, also it gets your lure out pass most lure mens casting range on overfished marks.tightlines I look forward to your next uploads 😎🐟
Thanks. There’s definitely a place for a longer lure rod yeah. It can come in handy for sure. Thanks for watching the video 🤙🏼🎣
Your content is great! Love it Cal
Thanks a lot mate, really appreciate it! 😀🎣
Great video, so glad to see someone from the uk review this rod, be fascinating to see how you get on in the long term. Any info on the rating, is it fast actioned?
Yeah it’s a medium to fast action rod. Designed to work surface lures so the rod tip is nice and stiff, great for getting a nice action on the lure. It’s rated 30-100g. I have different spots in mind where I’d like to use this rod and be able to reach areas that would be out of touch with a shorter rod so I’ll be using it a lot throughout the year. 👍🏼
Awesome video as always….
9foot rod vs the longcast, how much extra distance do you reckon you are getting ?
I’d love to know a side by side casting test, on grass, average of 5 casts each to see how much extra distance you actually get with the longcast…..
Me too, great suggestion, Steve!
Yeap me to 😆
Good question. Using the same 30g lure on each rod, I’d say I was getting maybe 15ft - 20ft extra distance on the Longcast. There’s a reef at one of the spots I fish and normally my cast will be a good 20ft away from it. I noticed with the Longcast, I was getting within about 8ft of that reef with a regular cast. The Longcast is 30-100g so I’d probably say the optimum casting weight would be with a 50g lure maybe. I haven’t really booted one out with the rod yet, but a normal cast definitely goes a fair bit further then my shorter rod.
The technique is different when casting a lure with a much longer rod too. I tend to ‘whip’ my shorter rod and it can blast lures out. A longer rod is heavier and a lot stiffer.
Thanks for the reply Cal, I’d be really interested in getting one if it made a really big difference in distance….
I’ll keep an eye on your future videos to see how you are getting on with it….
The marks I fish, if you could get say an extra 50 yards on the cast with standard lures maybe max 35-40g, I reckon it would make a really big difference….
Alright cal me and my mate have been watching you for ages and we are coming to the island for a week today. Fancy meeting up to give us some advice of we're to fish and stuff or if can't meet up send us some good bass marks to fish? Cheers James 👊
Nice work cal. Gonna have to get me self the king caster now there available…
They can certainly handle a lot 💪
@@FISHINGWITHCAL looking forward to it for spinning in the surf ….
Hi,
Do you think this rod and reel would suit mackerel fishing with feathers ?
Thanks - great channel
Hi mate. Yeah you could fish feathers for mackerel with this rod no problem.
How weird is this I was watching some of Grants videos yesterday thinking to myself I’m so tempted to get one of these rods for the winter Bassing.. big softies and metals in big seas just makes sense to have something you can just winch the buggers in on.
I reckon it would make a nice light ledgering rod too for the bass.
Perhaps il send my wish list to Santa a bit early lol
Was the shipping ok to get it to you ?
Thanks for doing the video bud !
Yeah it’ll definitely have its uses this rod. In the surf for sure!
Yep, no worries with shipping etc
I’m sure a lot of people would use it for light ledgering yeah. My only thought on that is, it could be a pretty pricey rod to use purely just for that. I’ll be giving it a go with some Gilthead fishing though.
I use an 11 foot rod lure fishing for when I want more range so to me sounds great
To be honest, I've never used anything over 9ft for lure fishing before. A longer, heavier rod can definitely come in handy though. Still getting used to it 👍🏼
Shads look awesome not used mind yet, soon🤞
The Shad is my favourite 👌🏻
I tried that design of lure clip a few years ago..............and stopped using them pretty quickly when my beloved IMA Salt Skimmer floated off in the current after it had disconnected from the clip!
Really.. that’s interesting. From The Lure Factory? I’ve been using these for quite some time now. The only other time that’s happened before is when I was fishing from a friends boat. I threw a Patchinko 140 out and had a hit from a small bass. I then thought I’d lost it. Once I’d reeled in, the lure was gone but the clip still intact. I couldn’t tell what’d happened at the time.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL I was using the Mustad version, if I am seeing your clip correctly in the video then I believe both clips are working on the same principle.............which I don't trust for lure fishing myself! I am not that keen on throwing away perfectly good £20 lures. Annoys me because I like the idea of these clips, but it's been the Breakaway Mini Link lure clip type for me ever since, never had a single problem if that is any help at all.
How big do those type of bass get? Here in Nova Scotia, we catch a similar looking saltwater bass referred to as a striped bass (black stripes along their sides). Minimum size limit is something like 28 inches long and they have been known to get very large - 80+ pounds. Most of the ones I have caught were between 20 and 40 inches long. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us 😎👍
They get to 20lb in the UK, well I guess they can get bigger, but that's about the record. Realistically though most fish you're going too catch will be under 5lb.
Yeah, they're related to your stripers and have the same body plan, just smaller.
I wouldn't mind giving the Saint Lawrence River a go. I heard it has some good specimens.
These bass don’t get as big as the striped bass. I've seen some of the Americans get some huuuge striped bass! They’re slow growing and were over fished for years so although the bass stocks are healthy now, the majority of them are small. Most UK bass anglers are after the dream fish which would be a double figure (10lb+)
I'd like to know the weight of your lure, because I think your rod is too powerful. I think this rod "Samson Long Cast 12ft Spinning Rod - EXPANSE LS" is more appropriate. the french fisher 😜
Good fishing coke can. You’ve got a massive rod.
Twice as long as yours..
Would you not get the same action and distance from say a carp rod.
Where were you able to get the rod from? Been keen for a while to own one
They’re on the Samson website. The link is in the description of the video 👍🏼
Mate I notice the slammer is not filled that much with braid, maybe 5mm below the rim? Is that ideal for that reel with braid?
It’s well known that you have to fill a Penn reel virtually to the top with braid. However, I put a full spool of 150m 22lb braid onto that reel and thought, ‘that’s not enough’. I’ve fished with it a few times now, including in strong wind and I haven’t had any issues with it so far. I’ve kept it like that to see if I can get away with it. So far so good. 👍🏼
Where do you get lure from . I live in guernsey . Do you get it from Amazon or micks
Micks have a few Samson lures in stock but they're the heavier 50g+ lures. Go to the Samson website (the link is in the description of this video) all the lures are on there 👍🏼
What's the sensitivity like with that rod ?
For working surface lures it's great. It has a fast action tip so very responsive when working the lures. I know Grant uses lures down to 10g with this rod but personally, I find you lose a bit of feel when you go down to anything less then 20g. That's just my personal opinion though. Overall the action on it is great, it's a stiff rod and has a lot of back bone behind it.
@FISHINGWITHCAL thanks mate, I might get one. Great channel by the way. Can I ask what editing software you use and is it hard to use ?
@@fishyweasel Thanks mate. I just use imovie. It's easy to use and its free.
Why you don’t mention the weight and the component of the rod ?!
I clearly state those things in the video.
Liked and shared.
Thanks David 👍🏼
I could do with a rod like that for some marks. Does that Sampson shad have a rattle, or is it silent?
No they’re all silent lures, no rattles. The rod will be handy for some surf fishing 🎣
What do u think of the rod
So far I like it. Takes a bit of getting used to using a much longer rod. I need to get a lot more use out of it yet.
Would be deadly off UK beaches with a 35 or 40-gram Surf Seeker.................>
Yes definitely. Our surf fishing is nowhere near as good as some places in the UK. I have a couple of spots in mind for that though.
£300 for that rod............... its definitely mushroom season !
I've seen what Grant Woodgate catches on those rods, maybe you should have a look yourself!!!!!
Just WOW! A few minutes in and my adrenalin is already pumping!
So, now you're using Grant's gear, does this mean you'll be balancing one footed on precarious cliff ledges, dancing across ravines and jagged shoreline rocks, as massive waves, wind and weather lash you, as you hook double figure, pristine bass, whilst angry Portuguese locals berate you for _"stealing"_ their mark? Grant REALLY is a breed unto himself! 😲
Just waiting till Tuesday to get the result of my big interview for a superb job in Cornwall, fingers crossed it's a yes, and instead of the 2 weeks a years sea fishing I currently get, it'll be year round bliss!!! Land locked Warwickshire is NO place for any sea loving, red-blooded male to be living!!! Although the perch and pike always try their very best to keep me happy, bless 'em. 🤍
Na no way. Grant’s in a league of his own. I’m just interested in trying new rods etc. slowly getting used to a longer lure rod. It’s a beast.
hope the job interview went well, it's great living here in Cornwall...............
@@henrygilbey302 Thank you so much, Henry, and yep, they've offered me the job, which I of course accepted! Serving West Cornwall, a dream come true! I'm starting beginning of November, family are over the moon. Imagine, I could be fishing for bass on the same marks as Henry Gilbey! Life, she is good!!! 😁
