- Fishing disputes arising from competing sovereignty claims over various features in the South China sea have stoked tensions between littoral states in the Asian region. It has also posed a serious challenge to maritime security. Fishermen from countries like the Philippines and Vietnam are now facing continuous struggle to defend their rights to fish in one of the world’s richest fishing grounds. This comes after China begins to assert its control over the waterway and all the resources beneath it.
As countries begin to stake territorial claims in the disputed region, competition for resources can only get bigger and more intense. In the contest for resources and influence in the strategic waterway, does China’s ‘Might is Right’ strategy work best for the region?
Where does that leave the fishermen, whose livelihood has taken a huge blow as a result of the aggressive and unregulated fishing activities in the region?

West Philippine Sea was started to use way back "2011" Filipinos aren't known sea navigators that's why there's no Pinoy town in China but instead the oldest Chinatown in the World is located in the Philippines. You might wanted to review the details of Treaty of Paris. Scarborough shoal is way beyond the territory of the Philippines. It's pretty obvious Philippines is being used by US to fight against China and delay its development. Before you sound so sure, you need to know your history about the 9 dash line after 1945 which is endorsed by the USA.
@@bleigh2600Just because in 1947 a Chinese geographer drew the 9-line in the map saying this is Chinese territory doesn't make it official, binding and legal that the United Nation has approved and granted it. But it's not. That's why the ruling in the Arbitral Tribunal said the 9-line claim has no legal and historical basis.

What are the enforcement clauses of the LOS. (Law of the Sea) ? Right now it's Might makes Right. Surely there are effective sanctions that can be implemented with the combined political will of LOS treaty members. A previous ruling without teeth is worse than useless.

I've been following this issue for quite some time now, and I'm glad to see that you were able to cover the issue so fully. For years and years, the situation between the Philippines and China deteriorated under the radar because of all the broken promises of finances and public works projects. As soon as China knew that the Philippines would never break off ties with the US fully (as much as Duterte toyed with VFW agreement, full knowing that the US was his last defense considering our underwhelming navy), they already knew they would merely be using the Philippines and not actually partnering with them. If you look at projects that actually got started or finished, many were in areas Duterte's party needed to increase support. In the end Duterte is really turning out to be a modern-day Marcos, pulling the wool over the public's eye with superficial projects and big promises

I live in one of this Philippine coastal area and personally knew this some of the fisherman and one of our main livelihood is fishing..this is true we're afraid fishing in the area..the navy or coastguard been there once in a bluemoon while chinese navy is always on the look out and have radar...the philippine goverment is playing diplomatic nonsense while fishermen is losing livelihood in that area that for generation is ours.. How i wish Palawan will be surrender to Malaysia since were close to Borneo..their navy patrol is more reliable that our goverment force...the local goverment is even too strict with local fisherment entering coastal town waters but cannot provide assistance fishermen going pagasa shoal..😢😢😢😢

This is a complicated matter. Actually my main concern is that the scarce, beautiful sea life is fished and not overfished with careful management. Different nations and ethnicities should be included in this; The people who should do the management are the Chinese. They should share South China Sea fishing grounds with other Asiatic ethnic groups willingly on a limited basis in a spirit of Asiatic cooperation. What beautiful Octopi in this South China Sea! Its just a name and means nothing when it comes to territorial claim. Its just to indicate its geographic location, as in "South of China". There are international laws that govern how much ocean you are allowed to claim off the shorelines of your country, and China is trying to take more than their fair share.

Filipinos here who know nothing about all the Military modernization, building new bases on PAGASA island. They just eat whatever the media feeds them. Who knows nothing that there are military and coast guard boats patrolling the area. Our coastline is huge and we have a little number of vessels available. This is the only administration that upgraded its coast guard, that's why you can't really see its effects yet because we are decades behind. Do you really think that the ASEAN will fight with us? We are closest to China, what country do you think will going to be devastated if this comes to war?? Even tho we are supported by the USA and other countries.
Our foreign minister is filing a diplomatic complaint against china every single day until the last ship of China ships out from our territory. Fixing this diplomatically is our only move, until then we and our government must not resort to war until we can defend ourselves. As our former hero said, "how are we going to fight them? This documentary did not even show that there are vessels on the WPS. That the government is creating bases and upgrading their vessels and warships that patrols the area. they did not even put it there how many coast guard personnel are currently there. IDK why new outlets hates the government so much, that they can't even show some of the governments works.

China’s ambition never changes in South China Sea. In 1974 when Vietnam war was going on, they used forces to invade Paracel archipelago from South Vietnam, in 1988 when USSR was weak, China invaded some islands of Spartly archipelago from Vietnam. Even though, South China Sea is a disputed territory, but China claims based on the nine dash lines map is unacceptable according international laws. War in South China Sea is no one want, but if China wants to physical control territory like on their map, the war of South China Sea is inevitable. It is the 21 century, China shouldn’t use forces to solve the disputed territory. The US and other Western countries do have interests in South China Sea, they will never accept China controlling South China Sea based on China nine dash lines map. Settle the dispute of South China Sea without arm conflicts will benefit all claimants.

I am very greatful for this compilation of truth and reality that CNA Insider has done to create this video. As of now there has only been 60,863 views, which would show that only those people concerned to be updated to what is happening in the South China Sea has been seeing what they already know. the question is, how do we make this video viewed by the ones who can make a drastic impact to stop the abuse that China's communist party is doing to the lives of the people in different countries surrounding the South China Sea. There are heaps of political and economic concerns to this according to whoever the leader of the country is, but, this is about moral principles for the whole world! Peoples lives and way of living have already been threatened continuously for years! They need to be stopped as soon as possible!
Dateline February 19, 2022. CCP China has not repeated water cannonading Filipinos at Ayungin shoal or elsewhere in the South China Sea like it did last November 2021. It was threatened with US/Filipino Mutual Defense Treaty by the US government.

Unclos had accepted this reservation, yet they violate them by unilaterally arbitrate when china rejected them as the owner. Thats the reason china excercise their right of reservation under article 298 unclos to reject unclos judgement 2016 scs as invalid.

What a hypocrite. Philipine really want to settle in court or negotiate , you must first return spratlies back to china .For your info, unclos have no juridicsion in judging territorial soveriegn. Philipine should go genuine international court UN ICJ. Not private sea arbitral tribunal of unclos. But i doubt philipine can even get a case after clearly violating treaty of paris and sino japan treaty in an act of war.

That's true. The US asked both sides to withdraw. The Chinese never did. The Filipinos went to the Hague to dispute EEZ Chinese claims. Fast forward today, the US government has firmly committed and aggressively supported Filipino territorial and EEZ rights in the South China Sea.
