You made a great point about letting yourself be with yourself without using background videos/music while doing chores. I promised myself I would refrain from doing that because my creativity was getting drained by the constant sensory overload and I could really feel it; but I had to study for a big exam this month and couldn't do anything at all without something in my ears. Now that I'm done I'll cut that stuff back a lot and try to listen to myself some more. I think it's also an issue of not wanting to be alone with yourself to avoid falling in some horrendous mental loops, but you will never confront yourself if you don't give yourself a chance.
There's certainly a balance that you have to strike when navigating this idea. To completely starve yourself of background streaming, which can be either calming or stimulating, really can be disastrous. I've been in one of those horrendous mental loops you mentioned. They're not pretty, though there's something to be said for the reflection they bring about yourself. I just make an effort to not have something in the background at all times. Maybe watching an MTG stream while unloading the dishwasher, but not listening to anything while folding laundry, etc.
Climates and calories is an oddball, you get a better read on how comfortable your character is by looking skyward and checking your status that way. I've also had weird interactions where my waterskin gets refilled by interacting with things that don't make sense like some npc or decorative flats or other things, sometimes even just happening while overland traveling. Not to mention its a bit unclear how food is handled which is why you frequently end up hungry just as soon as you hit the front door, Inn meals only work based on value so if you wnat a good long lasting meal you have to eat the expensive options which bothers me a bit, not to mention inventory food values and how quickly it rots. I no joke bought some bread and it rotted when i left the building.
It certainly can be obtuse, but the benefits are too good to pass up imo. I haven't run into the same issue you're describing, but you've seen how bad I am at keeping up with temperatures and things like that after fast travel.
Yes please more RPG talk, it’s my love for Daggerfall that got me into pen and paper gaming to begin with and there are so many treasures within the OSR genre. Mörk Borg is one of my favorites and my most absolutely pathetic character was a gutterscum and he lived for so long and now I have a fanged deserter who can’t help but whistle when he’s hiding, so that’s gonna be hilarious!
Another excellent episode man. I really enjoy your commentary and your perspective on overcoming nostalgic sadness through living with and for the next generation is quite insightful. The playthrough is going nicely as well. I really find it creepy that Morgiah looks to Manimarco as a sort of matchmaker. Something is rotten in the province of Daggerfall. Lastly, you commented upon how barbarians respond to one's etiquette skill. That makes a fair bit of sense to me as I imagine that many barbarian tribes would have fairly rich oral poetic traditions and that many of their interactions would be quite formalized.
These are some great points! Interestingly enough, I've heard that Morgiah's questline was setting up the main quest for Elder Scrolls 3 when the Tribunal plot was still planned on being in the Sumerset Isle.
@@micah_raygun_ That is interesting. I wonder what ES3 would have been like had it followed out these events. I love Morrowind, but this plotline seems quite intriguing.
I have a similar affinity for laundry. I started to appreciate them more when I became a temporary neet after university last year. Something about folding clothes just clicks. I've started to getting into writing fantasy settings for myself lately after binge reading a lot of Shamus Youngs' articles. I'm primarily an analytical writer, so this creative stuff has been a good exercise. I would be interested in hearing more about your tabletop systems and writings. Seeing the numbers behind a system is such an interesting part of tabletop. I love open world games, but not new ones. Most of the new ones feel like formulaic checklists with too much ui creep. It makes me long for when linear was more in vogue. Linear does have more conistent fun, but I find them to be about equal with open world. Thief 1 and 2 as well as Age of Decadence have a tightness while also allowing for for many solutions that open-world games lack nowadays.
When I went to Scourg Barrow, I don't think I have the same mod as you do, and those zombies hit like a truck. I was running through those hallways, avoiding everything, and somehow went through the door to the tunnels to Mannimarco's cave
So I mentioned this in passing during that segment, but one quirk of the Meaner Monsters mod is that the zombies actually got nerfed! In vanilla they do indeed hit like a truck and the Meaner Monsters mod makes them feel like the low level enemies that you encounter in other games. Running past them is typically the best course of action when you're such a low level
Love your videos. Love to hear all your roleplaying thoughts and DM experiences. I was wondering in a future video if maybe you could go further into the differences between OSRs vs other systems and what you like about them?
You're not the first person to recommend content that is strictly focused on TTRPG, so I'll keep this recommendation in mind. I struggle to think of what the visuals would be when not playing a video game though
You inspired me to try an Ironman character run, I tried to do a survivalist ranger type, caught a disease in privateers hold, was short 9 gold to cure the disease at the nearest temple, failed to pickpocket because I wasn't a thief and died in prison lol
Canon daggerfall moment 😂 It sucks but it's very telling of this game's difficulty that the weakest creatures can kill you. Hopefully next time you can loot enough from Privateer's Hold to go directly to Gothway Gardens and get enough gold for cures when needed.
have you heard about the Wayward Realms? Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay are making it. i'm always really skeptical about these types of things, but it would be awesome if it works out.
Long time listener, first time caller. Half-watching/listening to your videos provides a great + calming distraction from some of 2024's..uuhh..brutalities. Suggesting for next horse's name "Queen of Cans and Jars" to honor an earlier fallen horse comrade (whose name got me into Guided by Voices in the first place).
I'm a collector completionist, so elden ring perfect for me. So many things to find and collect. I've been replaying it again with a new character for when the dlc comes out. I absolutely see where you're coming from about its open world, but for me, finding all of these little items to collect really does something for me, and finding items in this colossal world feels really rewarding. My real complaint about the world is that the game is so big, and the quests are so cryptic, that is very easy to just fail quests because you didn't know to do something incredibly obscure, and thats where guided come in for me.
I can definitely see the appeal of exploring every nook and cranny of the game to get all the collectibles and rare items. I really need to slow down and read some item descriptions--I've basically forgotten all the lore I once new about the game and don't even stop to check what the items do 😅 Something I appreciate about Elden Ring is the sheer variety of armor and weapons. Fashion Souls has reached its peak. I don't feel forced into any certain build either. My character uses all the Golden Order incantations with high Faith and Int, a combination I never thought would be possible or at least practical. Such a sweet aesthetic though
it seemed fine to me but you may need to find your Audio Ducking settings and shut them off if that's what you were mentioning early in the video. Nice vids always look forward to them.
Hah you caught me, I was doing the dishes during the callout portion. I would be very down for any OSR content, I've only DM'd one game of DCC with my fiance playing and I really enjoyed it. Just speaking for myself but I'm really interested in seeing solo rpg content from you, I love your insight and approach to role playing and I'm curious how solo rping works. Though i suppose technically rping playing daggerfall is solo rpging 😅
It happens to me a lot. The worst thing is when you just want to relax with your favorite game after a hard day at work, solving other people computational problems. You prepared everything for an unforgettable night of gaming. You have your chips, your bowl of wotar but suddenly something fails and you just.... turn off the pc and go to sleep to release some steam. I hate those days.. or windows update times.. or ssd dying time...
Don't know if you've seen it, but there is a solo paper RPG called 2d6 dungeon that only uses d6. It's great, simple and super thorough in its charts and tables. No game is the same.
It's funny that I always considered DS1 as an "open world" game since everyone starts with the master key, which let's you go practically anywhere, and I felt like DS2 and DS3 was a step down because they railroaded you more. I don't like Elden Ring's multi player very much though, because since they've made it so easy to play with friends, random summoning and invasions seem like they're a lot less common.
Different strokes indeed! I'm pretty confident that I'm missing 90% of the quests and such on my first go around with these games 😅 I just love not knowing what to expect
Noooo bro if you unzip the new version to a different version than the previous one, you should be able to drag and drop all the mods from StreamingAssets into the new folder :o
Elden Ring is From's final iteration of the classic Souls formula, taking the most successful elements of the previous three games and distilling them into a spiritual finale to the series that in my opinion was executed extremely well. It walked back from the more radical design changes present in Bloodborne and Sekiro in service of that, but I disagree with this being a regression and even so there are elements of both of those games in Elden Ring in the form of the stance mechanic in enemies and as a particular endgame reward (you should try beating the final boss of the Haligtree, hint hint).
I just found a big lake of scarlet rot water in the Haligtree--am I getting warmer? 😅 I agree though, my initial impression of it being a regression wasn't really fair to the game, I think I was simply viewing the game through some unnecessarily cynical lenses.
That's good to hear! I can't promise there will be anything up for grabs anytime soon, but I'll at least focus making my materials more accessible and organized.
my problem with elden ring's open world is that it's just a spread out monster arena. i like open worlds that have locations full of people. i don't think it's bad per se just not that great compared to the open world of an rpg
GET IN BOYS ITS HERE
