I love to watch these old movies, particularly the pre-code films, while trying to put myself in the mindset of a person who walks into a theater in 1929, seeing these reels as brand new, state of the art entertainment.
Such a lovely & very romantic film. Every character were so wonderful. His singing & also his lyrics were extremely beautiful. Thank you for sharing this ♥️
Rudy Vallee said it best about this picture: "The picture was so bad that theatres which screened it had to be fumigated, and later {this was the 1980s} it was only shown to captive audiences in prisons and comfort stations." About his acting, PHOTOPLAY said "Rudy goes through the whole gamut of emotions without moving a muscle. But when he sings - ah, that's a different story. (A better one, too.)." Mordaunt Hall of the New York Times (November 1929) noted "Except for Marie Dressler's effective comedy, the acting is by no means of a high order." Sally Blane as "Jean" is only marginally better as an actor compared to Vallee. But on the flip side, Marie Dressler steals the show as Mrs. Whitehall - the picture really comes alive whenever she's let loose. The sax player with all of the best lines ("And I hate water!") is Eddie Nugent, who had a long stage and film career, appearing with Joan Crawford in OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS and OUR MODERN MAIDENS. The band is Vallee's actual group, The Connecticut Yankees. And the film featured one lovely song, "If You Were the Only Girl In the World" (Grey/Ayer), originally written in 1916. A final note: The director, Marshall Neilan, went on a drunken spree during shooting, and the film had to be finished by assistant director Wallace Fox.
@@scotnick59 I was referencing her film career, she was in the 1st 'full length' feature in 1914, with Chaplin & Normand. She started her stage career in the mid 1880s at age 14. She was born a couple years after the Civil War, she was Canadian. Amazing..
It's hard for modern fans to understand the huge celebrity and stardom of Rudy Vallee. I personally think he was a very credible supporting actor later in his career...the 40s....much more than his musicality of the 20s.
Sally Blane is one of 4 sisters, Loretta Young being the most well known. They were all attractive. Lorettas sisters acted but they knew Loretta would be the 'star' because she was so determined and focused on a career.

"It's De-looX, It's De-lovely..."
