- For the 11th video in our "Blank by Drone" series we take you to charming Newport, Rhode Island. We just completed a 14-month roadtrip around the United States in which we filmed many videos. We have plenty more in the works, so if you liked this video, please subscribe to see more.
We were contacted by the Newport tourism office, Discover Newport, and asked if we'd like to make a video of their wonderful town. We are so happy we did. We spent a week in Newport, and between filming (mostly in the mornings and evenings) we were able to spend some time enjoying ourselves around the town. It's such a beautiful place! The equipment used for this video was mostly the DJI Phantom 2 with a GoPro Hero 4 mounted on a Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal. Some of the shots were filmed with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional, and the twilight shots were filmed with a DJI Inspire 1 Raw...a new system for me which I'm very excited about!

Rhode Islander here. I agree Newport by far is the best. I tell out of town friends to always visit during late-spring and summer. And always make Newport your no.1 destination.

I have lived in Newport since 1998. Absolutely beautiful and astounding place. World Class.
Just beautiful, I haven't been to Newport, R.I. since Spring time, '91, I just remember how beautiful it is there and stayed at a sweet B&B, and saw a few of the Mansion tours and it snowed a little and I loved it all, visited a good friend in Massachusetts and then he took me to see Newport for a few days, I'll never forget that amazing place, I loved M.A. too, all of New England was wonderful! I hope to go back, this time with the real love of my life (not the guy I visited)! Lol 😉😁

Sailing down to Newport during the summer on Lazybones. Hanging on a mooring for a week at Ida Lewis. Walking downtown. The sights, the smells, the people. There is no substitute.

I have lived in newport 32 years this city is steep in history there are so many interesting places to visit beautiful beaches great restaurants shopping areas the list goes on and on

Just stunning. I've watched this 20 times. The music is amazing. The scene where he goes from circling around the baseball field and fades into the sailboat is amazing. I live 1 hour from Newport. As soon as weather cracks I'll be boosted boarding around getting some footage on my phantom 4!
I couldn't agree more, I watched this over and over again. I have been blessed to do a lot of real estate in this area and this video highlights just how special Newport is.

I used to visit Middletown/Newport every year from 1960~2012. It was the greatest place to spend a summer vacation. I miss Rhode Island so much...
I will be moving back in a couple of years....been in Santa Cruz, CA (another amazing place) for 16 years. This video is SO well done....I'm getting excited to move back.

Thanks. I've got a timelapse video that I'll be releasing in 3-4 weeks (possibly sooner, but we're moving currently, so timing of things is up in the air), and then after that I'll continue working on drone videos...I've got footage for five more city videos.

You have managed to capture this area, the likes of which I've never seen! We just purchased a 4K television, this was one of the first videos that we viewed, amazing and stunning images of Rhody! This inspired me to get my drone back in the sky!!!
Thank you. I think this was one of the first videos I watched on our 4K TV when we got it. We bought the TV in fall 2016, so even though I had been making 4K videos for two years by that point, I hadn't yet watched them in full 4K resolution, so after getting the TV I went back and watched all of them. It was fun! :-)

You should! I started doing it because one person told me "if you're going to do it, you should do it now." That was almost nine years ago, and while it was slow-going at first, I'm happy about where it has brought us and the opportunities it has opened up.

The flying is fantastic but the split second shots slamming at you one after another is nerve wracking. I love Newport. Had an aunt who lived there.
It's a trade-off. I've made slower-paced videos and they never get the same interest or viewership as the faster-paced ones. I have thought about doing more of the slower videos, but I recently heard someone say "This is UA-cam, not the Oscars". Once I heard it put in those words I shifted my mindset to "let's make videos that I enjoy making, but also that other people will enjoy watching" with the hope that by generating more interest in our videos, then we can continue to make more and more.

Great video. Any stipulations about flying around Newport? I assume at a minimum contact the airport there. But any other limitations? Seems like you got some great footage all over the place.

Depends on if you're flying under hobby rules (Part 101) or commercial rules (Part 107). If you're flying as a hobbyist, and you want to do so within five miles of the airport (which would be a significant portion of Newport, though not the last mile or two of the peninsula), then you'd need to contact the local airport and notify them of your flight. You can find the info to contact the airport on AirMap.com. If, however, you were flying under commercial rules, then you'd need to be Part 107 certificated, but you wouldn't need to contact the airport since you'd be flying in Class G airspace. The Newport airport is small enough that it doesn't get a Class B, C, D, or E designation...meaning, by process of elimination, that the airspace is Class G. Under Part 107 rules (again, if you pass the Part 107 exam and receive a certificate from the FAA) you're free to fly in Class G airspace so long as you do it safely, follow the other rules of Part 107, and avoid other aircraft.
