Hey, thanks for the back to back samples without having to scroll and search.
All great mics, in context i would go for the 251E, it sits perfect in the mix.
Thanks bro 🙌
Cool comparison, thanks! In this song the 251 felt a little congested and the 47 just right.
Yea it did .. I got the original GA251 and I’m just now coming to conclusion now since I got some new speakers that this mic isn’t it at all ! 😢
Great review man! Been using the 251 for over a year now, made the switch from an 800G & it's noticeably warmer. Nothing wrong with the 800 at all but I have to say I haven't looked back since.
Best yet
Chris did it again! 😊Very different sounding mics. In this song I think the 251 fits better your voice. Sounds upfront but without the 'excessive' fullness of the 800G and the 'excessive' forwardness of the U47. IMO GAP has done and incredible work with these mics.
Yeah they're really great mics! I personally do gravitate towards the 8000 but I want to try the 251 a bit more, perhaps with my V76 pre. Thanks for watching ✌️
I love this style demonstration it reveals the subtle differences in the sound character of the microphones and what an artist or recording engineer can expect as far as the sound out of the 3 microphones I preferred the GA800 but what I find very interesting is that when I listened back to all of your microphone demos in my home studio which is acoustically treated and has high quality neutral sounding monitors I found the Sony c-100 to be the most balanced sounding microphone out of all the mics you covered even though it’s no where near the cost of some of the other mics lmy your thoughts? Great video as always 👌🏾✌🏽
Well one thing is ofc personal preference, one other thing is that the Sony is a great mic ha! I do also gravitate towards modern mics, balanced like the Sony and GA8000. I want to try out a bunch of HW to see if I can find the perfect chain but that is going to be costly. I don't like to compress vocals that much so I would probably need 3-4 comps doing like 1-2db each, which is going to be very costly in the HW world 🙈 Anyways thanks for watching ✌️
I prefer the C800G articulation. Listen to the word 'never' after 4:28. C800G is clear, 251 is congested, and U47 distorts the voice.
800G sounds more foreward, detailed, clear and compressed, good for mixing pop.
The elam 251e sounds clear, but lacks lows. Sounds more open, good for ballads. The u47 sounds more muffled, but warm; ideal for female singers with sharp vocals or quiet songs that need body.
In the mix it sounds like the compression favored the 800g more. It sounds more radio ready than the other 2. It's in the sound the whole time while the other 2 peek out above the music at certain tines during the vocals performance.
Enjoyed the shootout, all these mics sound great,, but your voice is golden⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💽💽💽💽💽
First I would say that these mic are all amazing and equally good, but in context of this mix I liked the 251 best as it sat best in the mix, c800g second place and U47 third place. But whats interesting is, when listening in solo I prefered the c800g over the 251.
I like the 800G.
The analogies are spot on. Great job once again! The 251e and 8000 are pretty similar with more emphasis on the top end, but for this particular example and song, I liked the 47 best. Really smooth and matches well with your voice on this song.
Since I've owned most of the famous vintage Neumanns I've grown a little bit tired of that mid focused sound. I do think I prefer my crispness to sit a bit higher like in the Sony and 251 😊 Thanks for watching ✌️
@@Christian_svedin Definitely. I can see how that different-more crisp flavor is a nice change for you.
@@tonygunz21 I was surprised to read your summary, since I placed the U47 LAST (the "800" being the clear winner).
The solo comparison really tells a lot.
Subtle but definitely a difference!
For me sounded very similar
Great comparisons . I prefer 251 and u47. I just like the feeling of a little fluff around the sound, a bit softer edge.
I wonder if you ever thought of recording a basic electric guitar distorted tone? Just a basic rythm chord progression under the vocals to see how the mics cut over that type of sound?
You could probably sing the same songs and do a cleaner piano/acoustic version but also have a electric version . Maybe asking too much and not your style but that would be interesting .
Thanks for your effort, sounds good!
Cool idea! If the arrangement is fairly laidback it would be easy to sculpt the vocals around the guitar track. My guess is that the 251 would be a good fit. The U47 has more 2-3khz emphasis which might be problematic in that scenario. All would probably work though!
I prefer the crystall clean Sound of C800 G, but in combination with a La2a to add the signal more body, and a softer edge. This way I can dose exactly how much of this vintage sound I want to add to my vocals.
U47 sounded best in my opinion. Followed by the Sony and then the 251. Surprised I liked the Sony slightly more than the 251.
Right finding.
The 251 sounded smooth to the piano and to the song! They all are Golden Age Projects?
Thanks! Yeah but it's the premier line. Premium components etc. They're great!
I really like the 800 on your voice. But I might like the 251 more if you could try not to clamp down on your open consonants, like the H in "hold on". By working on this technique, I strongly believe that your wonderful voice would have an added effect of excitement and emotion. If you try this, The only adjustment you'd have to make when tracking is be careful not to expose the capsule to your soft palette. It's a minute change that could really add a nice sparkle and edge to the very controlled manner that you naturally sing in.
I really really like your voice mate
✌️
Clamp down? You want it more open or a more narrow sound? Thanks for watching ✌️
@@Christian_svedin open!
@@Christian_svedin " h" is not a flicative consonant, it's an open consonant, try it! Thank you for being open to a suggestion mate, sign of a great artist! If it doesn't work for you I get it but it can evolve into a feature of your singing that you use for adding drama or texture to a phrase or song section. See how you go mate
@@gmichaelhall thanks! I always try to improve my vocal skills. I spend allot of time the last year or so and I could make a whole episode about that haha! But I have improved my intonation and stabilized my range quite a bit. Thanks 💪✌️
@@Christian_svedin you have the natural gift for singing great pitch and intonation and timing. Vocal training is like a life long training for the Olympics kind of thing. It's like guitar playing, Everytime we master a level, the next level of challenge reveals itself to us. But for voice, you either have beauty of tone or you don't, you do- so everything you do with your training expands on an already beautiful instrument. Do you ever train with classical coaches?
All Mics are great:
800G is a bit over the top with to much texture in the hights.
The U47 is nice warm, but the low mids blooming to much. But nice character.
The Ela M 251 fits best. Nice details, warm and fresh in the same time. Best Mic out there for non Rock or Rap singers.
For Rock, the 47. For Soul, Rap, the 800 and for Pop, ballads the 251.
Someday near i have to buy the new GAP 251. I got the MK2, but that thing is butter!
Why not rap with the ELA 251?
@@isaiahhudson5470 If it’s sounds good, it is good.
@@mistermusicenterprise3148 yeah I like the fact that its really crispy, I’m a guy with a kinda deep voice tho and I know it’s a female popular mic. Have you ever heard a guy with a kinda deep voice pull it off?
@@isaiahhudson5470 Yes. I. It works for my extrem low voice better than my Mojave MA200, - it’s like a modern version of a Neumann U67.
Never Sounds my voice so controlled deep and yet crispy. For me I would never use another Mic for my main vocal.
And Yes, I bought the 251 for a female singer, but in that case it impressed me less.
The 251 can sound to smooth on smooth voices.
My voice sounds deep really and kind of damaged. Some similar like Ville Valo. And it sounds amazing on the 251.
For rap? Why not. The c800 sounds for sure some kind of „faster" and the high end is more crystal then silk.
But it’s always so depend on the singer.
If You can, try it. I had the Townsend Sphere before. I liked it. The sound was great but i can´t properly use my hardware compressors by the tracking.
If You use Software Compressors.. why not sphere ?
Your voice is very beautiful. I hope to hear many songs from you. You are an artist worth to following
I wanted you to compare it with singing close to the mic and the second you are far from the mic
This will make the differences clearer specially in S letter and SHH
What I liked is the 251 I see that it clarifies all the letters smoothly and shaping the sound .. also the new Neumann reissue M49v i think this mic will fit to ur sound perfect.
thank u man..
Thanks! I usually like to keep a healthy distance to the mics, say 30cm atleast. That usually evens out the proximity and helps the "s-sounds". I hope I will be able to score an original m49 this year. That's the only vintage Neumann I haven't owned! Thanks for watching
Is there a 251 with the bottom to mid of a 47?
what song is this? it's beautiful
hey can you do a review on the tlm 49 🙏 by nueman
On paper I don't like the 800 and am a U47 person. In context with this track, I preferred left to right.
Not my type of genre and stuff though, so maybe I'd actually like a 47 for my own music.
Interesting insights, thanks! :)
Trial and error! Sometimes you're so dead set on a certain type of mic you might discard the rest and maybe miss out! Thanks for watching ✌️
Thank you for this comparison. Are these clips the exact same take, cause they do look (and sound) a little bit different in the waveform?
Yes different takes but taken exactly after each other ✌️
@@Christian_svedin Yes they sound consistent enough so I thought I had to ask lol.
@@owlmega-101 i did my best! Which one was your favourite?
You sound like 20ish through 800G, 30ish through 251, and 40ish through U47. I think where the 47 excels at, is to make someone's voice 10 yr elder. In the context I do think 800 and 251 feel more modern and trendy to these 2010s - 2020s pop songs. And I agree with you, 800G seem to have more detail than 251, and thus 251 sound more "mix-ready" right out of the box. But if I'm doing a lot of post to the files maybe I'd prefer 800G.
With all that said, the differences are very suttle. I believe one can compensate most of them, with some singing technique and EQ adjustment. Maybe the results won't null, but can be in the same style. Personally I got a WA-47jr which is very fat but I managed to make it sound more modern using EQ.
Also agree with you that the "Neumann's mid" is kinda too old skool for my taste, especially when I don't do lots of jazz and rock n roll singing. Hopefully you can make a comparison to Delphos II vs. U87 vs. U47 or even M49 (whether it's replicate or not). Would like to know the sound of the modern take on the Neumann series.
the ga8000 for me
Yeah I like it allot. Balanced and open! 😊
You still got yours?
I still got mind
@@ripdocholiday9650 bro I just got both, 251 and 8000. I love this 8000
@@ripdocholiday9650 what's your IG?
47 Sounds unbeatable wow!!!
Any shootouts with the new TeleFunken models?
From TF. USA? Nothing planned I'm afraid!
@@Christian_svedin 😂😂😂
47 was my favourite in the mix by far, but least favourite solo'd, where the 800g seemed more pleasing. context is weird like that
That's why I like to present my tests in a mixed and processed context. Raws will highlight some aspects but will only tell you so much 🙂
The mix is the most important aspect no one listening an album with solo vocals
I agree with your view. 800 was too bright, 251 warmer, u47 warmest. Didn’t like the 800. The difference was more noticeable in the context of the mix. A pultec could warm up the 800 by rolling off the top. U right, it is all rather subtle….
There's just something about the 251 sound... 800g would be next, sounds as "good" but not as fun and exciting and forward as 251 to me
What preamp was this?
Golden age premier 73 DLX 👍
I thing the 800G works best for your voice
shockingly...the 800g sounded best on your voice on this particular song
Buahahaha, another "comparision" of top quality mics in the internet...but with not oryginal mics but with very nice representation of that famous mics". That is sooooo lame. Realy you don't feel embarrassed to make such a "comparision" ? And in the title and descripton of movie you say that you compare not "good representation of that mic" but you use original brands names...sooooo clickbait :)
Thank you for such constructive criticism. If you scroll through my channel you'll probably find the most extensive test library where I used actual Vintage originals that you'll find on any other channel. I've owned and used pretty much all of the famous vintage models so for this test I thought it was valid to use clones to demonstrate the differences between the models. Thanks 👍
I think the whole vlog is nothing but fake. Sorry to to pull you from your dream of hearing any difference.. showies.
get your ears checked or stop listening to it on your phone speakers
