A FAQ for those wondering: Why not do this in the nether? - This was built in the overworld during 1.15 after the Nether Update was announced, since the realm this was on was going to reset the nether for the update. Was this done in survival? - Yes. The blue ice was all harvested from a nearby frozen ocean before I even had plans to do anything with it. Why blue ice? - Blue ice has different properties from normal or packed ice, and has a faster top speed when boats are ridden on it. Shaders? - Yes, Builder's Modded Shaders. I used these shaders because they were very performance-friendly and my graphics card at the time couldn't handle the higher-end shaders on Optifine. What's with the wither named Mister Withers? - Mob griefing was disabled on this realm, so a friend thought it would be funny to have a caged wither. Why the checkerboard pattern of the ice? - To save on materials. ~5,000 blue ice is much easier to gather than 10,000 blue ice. Why the slabs/wooden buttons? - To prevent mobs from spawning in the dark spots on the track. Why so close to ocean level? - It look pretty.

We have the samesystem, just in the Nether, on the server I'm playing on :) I actually helped design and build it! It's a grid, but with shorter tracks, it's 750x750 blocks I think (the size of the map is limited), and on those straights I could get the boat to average around 200 km/h. It's very convenient, and even though I have an elytra I actually go by this system if my destination is connected to it and further than around my render distance.
So here's the math - b(block) m(meters) 1 block = 1m(meter) Boat and blue ice = 73 b/sec So 73*3600 = 262,800b/h 262,800/1000 = 262.8KM/H (KEROSENE PLAYING) So 263KM/H or 163MPH on the over world If its made on neither so as per overworld.... 1block in the neither= 8block on the over world So 263*8 = 2104KM/H or 1307MPH
If you do a checkerboard pattern its more inconvenient if you fall out of the boat and goes slower, you're throttling the speed. Instead, just make it a huge strip on the left side of the path with the right side being emtpy. The boat will still register this as a long stretch of path

Elon musk thinking about using boats out there for his hyperloop
So here's the math - b(block) m(meters)
1 block = 1m(meter)
Boat and blue ice = 73 b/sec
So 73*3600 = 262,800b/h
262,800/1000 = 262.8KM/H (KEROSENE PLAYING)
So 263KM/H or 163MPH on the over world
