Thanks to CompetitionPlus.com reader Monty Bogan, we are able to present what will be a multi-part series of home videos shot by him at IHRA events from 1993 until 1996, focusing on the old Modified Eliminator in an era when stick shift cars winded high and dumped the clutch.
You'll see a gaggle of high-winding Corvette Stingrays, Chevy II's and Camaro working the gearbox on both eighth and quarter mile runs.
You see facilities such as the old Shuffletown Dragway, Greer Dragway, Ohio Valley Raceway and legends Thunder Valley Dragway in Bristol, Tenn., and Darlington Dragway in Darlington, SC.
Who knows? You might catch some Quick Eight Pro Modified footage in there too.
Be sure to download the CompetitionPlus.com mobile app; its a free download at the Apple Store or Google Play.

Wow does this bring back memories... I especially love the guys who are running crashboxes as they power shift and never lift; bounce it up to 11,000 or so... And for those who complain about the video quality? 1. Just listen to it. Seriously; it's the best part. 2. You obviously never experienced it in person, but for those of us who did (which translates into: OLD), it brings a huge smile to our faces, so WE enjoy it and the memories it triggers.
Good Ol Charlie Brown, wow, that thing has been around as long as dirt, always a force to reckon with.
This guy took a video shoot of some great modified production and gas cars (now Competition Eliminator) and decided NOT to let the viewer see who won most of the races. MORON!
He won a lot of races at Shuffletown & I think I remember him showing up (& doing well) at many of the IHRA events at Rockingham & Darlington as well.
I took a trip to the US from Australia in 1992 and took in a meet at Bristol, a lot of the cars in this video were there, the RPM fix i got at that meet will never be forgotten!
Nothing like 10,000 rpm
From the D/MP Stingray days of R-M-S, Lee Shepherd was questioned on the sanity of 10,000 RPM launches. "Well, we find the weak stuff really quickly".
Vroomah vroomah vroomah took a little reving get that 50 lb flywheel spinning good what's not to love
"Super Rod cars right behind the modifieds" As the crowd lining the fences begins to drift away. Them wuz the daze.
Love to go back and see these RACES......... 😁👊🇺🇸🏁
As soon as I saw the title I knew it was Modified Eliminator! God bless you. Notice not all the cars were doing dry hops. It was dying out by then. When I bought my 440 Duster in 1989, the seller made me a sheet that said, "2nd gear burnout only with 1 to 2 dry hops." LOL I still haven't done one to this day.
right ...dry hops waste the hot sticky tire you just created with the burnout...same with doing the burnout past the water box. do the burnout get to the line and launch.
Heavy flywheel makes some great music doesnt it
ShuffleTown was a such great track.Hated to see it close
With Larry Wright announcing .
So many great memories there.
Thanks for sharing
There was a old track in wentsville Missouri my dad used to take me too when I was a kid in the 90s bf they shut it down. I just lost my old man. So glad to see these this am. Thank u
I raced there in the 90s, it was called MAR mid America raceways, fun times,
Mid America Raceway
That white 66 Chevy II is badass! Damn I want that car!
a 6.00 rear gear and a Lenco 4spd, looks like FUN!
Love those C2 Corvettes with high winding small blocks!!
I miss racing so much great days they were my friends !!!!!!!
Real race cars have three pedals!
LOL, and typically two doors!!
Wow I was there
Those were the days! Always HATED automatics, they sucked! I decided to try a power glide in my 66 Nova in the mid 80's, it lasted half of a season, and put my Doug Nash hand shaker back in. There is nothing like pulling a gear, although I always had problems with u-joints, lol.
Who the f**k gave this video a thumbs down?? 18 die-hard low rpm automatic transmission fans.
Probably the guy who would like to see who actually won a race. Note to cameraman: There are two lines on a dragstrip- the starting line AND the finish line!
@@nashvillecop1 Anyone who's watched this video, for what it's intention is, could care less about who won or lost any of these races that took place 25 to 35 years ago!! This video is a tribute to high winding, manually shifted race cars which have basically disappeared from drag racing.
Tommy and Wayne are two guys that know what to do to make a car go quick. Wayne did some work on an old Falcon for me and Tommy has given me some advise. I was fortunate enough to find and buy one of his old chromoly chassis he had built a few years ago.
True Street Hot Rods!! 😊.
If you don't have a clutch you don't have much
this is RAW !!!!
A Friend Of mine Chuck Bosone said he knew a guy named Earl Muscarelli that did this in the 70/80s Id like to know more about this heavy fly racing
I love when I go to a race and there are still people using clutches and doing well , well I just like clutch cars. But anyways - - Scott Palmer still has a clutch on his screw blown Pro Mod for example :-) :-) -- great stuff!
That's when Pro Mod Was Fun (Lenco Transmissions With A Clutch Pedal) With Both Cars Rubbing Door Handles, To The Finish Line!!!!
@@goldhunter9641 oh absolutely, not to say when you look inside an automatic Outlaw or NHRA Pro Mod, the technology isn't incredible, but when you have to drive it like an alcohol funny car.. Holding at the right revs, Feathering it into stage lights, dumping the clutch, have your hand on the break ready to pull on it in case you go into Shake all the while steering the car hitting your shift lights or shifting early if it's shaking and the brake didn't stop the shake - - and all that badass stuff :-). That is still right there when you can execute that consistently and keep your cool... And outrun automatic cars lol🤟🏻🙂
Big money Bil Clanton still awesome with a clutch!
Ah yes stone washed Jean's and teased hair that is very flammable!
Steve brule ? Tim & Eric show
Badass
Back when cars were steele and running on motor power only.good ol days
Still running on motor power. Just with more air and fuel now 🤙
Huh? Cars have been running power adders even before this 😂
Yes but u have,nt seen him drive the great pumpkin yet!!! Ha ha.😊
great video. i have one suggestion. TRIPOD!!!! lol.
REALLY GOOD ACTION FOOTAGE...EXCEPT IT WOULD REALLY BE NICE TO SEE WHO WON AT THE FINISH LINE!
1320' , EXELLENT!!!
This video confirms my notion that drag racing is abusive only if its done right. Manuals forever!
13.26 A YOUNG CASEY MCREARY
Dry hops. Because you can.
I don't get it by the headings on it I thought it was going to be a flywheel comparison
0.3. FOR A MOMENT I THOUGHT THAT THE CAMARO WAS GOING TO TAKE ON THE SCOOTER
Who drives the Corvette at 12:32
JIm B
Can't beat MODIFIED, when NHRA dropped it they died! NHRA racing sucks today, for a good time watch Southeast Gassers!
A four-door Nova and 57 wagon scrap iron
I thought this was a video of flywheels busting off
Nothing says.. I got somthing for you like a 10 k. Dry hop.
The blue stripes on the mustang gotta go. Sick car without them.
1:23 mustang
This film footage sucks, I could not enjoy watching this.....
A guy posts 28 year old, one-off original camcorder footage we are lucky to even have and you whine about..... sigh.
@@johnwilburn I don't care if it's 100 years old it's STILL bad footage!
@@louisadipietro9184 Then you simply don't get it - and you never will. Your loss, not ours!
@@louisadipietro9184 - you did read the part where we said it was home video, right? SMH - Bobby
@@CompetitionPlusTV yup and it STILL SUCKS
