I lost a friend who was a terrible alcoholic. He died trying to get sober. I was very angry at him thinking he chose to die. After listening to a few interviews with Matthew, I have newfound compassion.
As someone that deals with addiction I find it impossible to understand how people don't understand how difficult addiction is. Just like people who don't suffer from addiction find it extremely hard to understand why some of us have such a hard time staying sober.
No one chooses to be an addict. No one saw themselves there before they arrived - It's something that happens TO them. The important thing is to continue to be there for them and to try to have compassion and empathy
my addiction was so bad i would delibrately isolate myself so i could tell myself im alone, nothings working out and boom relapse! it is sad how easy it is to start flirting with your worst enemy
Jeez, Whe he said "you're disease" i thought what RUBBISH, its NOT a disease, its a choice, Cancer, Alzheimer,s & Parkinsons are diseases, drugs, & alchol are a choice, just the same as you can choose NOT to do them, or did someone have a gun to his head forcing him to drink & take drugs,? its self - inflicted, please just STOP saying that drugs & alcohol are a disease, they are NOT, they are a CHOICE.
By being so candid and honest about his addictions it will definitely help others. And now he’s never going to have to go through rough times alone. Remember…Friends is not only a great show that everyone loves but now friends are the reason to stay sober.

He didn't overcome it. He said himself he got to a stage where if he didn't have like 50pills a day his body would be shutting down. Unfortunately he crossed the line where full recovery is very unlikely
Addiction is HARD for us non-addicts to understand. His honesty is going to help a lot of people - and hopefully de-stigmitize it further. Thank you Matthew for sharing your story coz often, the truth is not pretty. That takes courage.
Honestly I know it’s just a dumb TV show about a humanized horse, but Bojack Horseman really helped me understand what it’s like. Or at the very least get closer to what it’s like.
No it’s actually really easy to understand. Take too much of something and your body will be some addicted. That’s literally it lol. He is all “boo hoo I feel bad because I do drugs but I want more drugs to not feel bad” How about you just don’t do drugs; eventally you will feel normal again. I left and addict husband due to his addiction, i was so angry to him destroying my life, my dream of family…i listened Matthew book 3 times and all i can feel now is sorry and compassion to my ex and happy i moved away….he was not ready…thanks Matthew, you gave me answers to so many queations about addictions

I admire him so much, despite sinking back into addiction again and again, he never gave up on himself and did whatever he could to recover and even help other people. It’s so much more heartbreaking that he’s taken away just when life is back on track for him and ready to enjoy the rest of his life. Gone way too early. Bless your soul Matt.❤

For you to open yourself up in such a vulnerable way, I promise you, will help so many people struggling to survive. Addiction is taboo to many, but maybe hearing this from you, will help people understand that it is everywhere, and effects everyone, but it is a disease, and it needs to be discussed, and people need help. I know how hard this had to be, and I can relate with you 💯, but I thank you for your courage! I do believe this is why you are still here. Your purpose was bigger, than I’m sure you ever imagined. @@Former_Pastor He stated that women have used him for his money. He wants someone self-supporting, (most importantly, monetarily) in all ways. Someone caring, a sense of humor, beautiful inside and out, someone who can go back and forth with him. He said he's not scared anymore of receiving love and will ask for more. He's said that he wants kids and a family. He doesn't want to be alone.
He might have been diagnosed with diabetes before he started his alcohol adventure but Conventional medicine has no clue. Where does he fall in the family lineup and did his mom have any complications during pregnancy.
I remember when I first saw this interview...profound, yet so sad. After everything he overcame i'm heartbroken to hear he passed. He will be greatly remembered and greatly missed.
I was never a Friends Fan but I've seen quite a few Interviews and Podcasts with Matty and, a wonderful human and what he did for People like me or others in Situations they shouldn't and ultimately can't face themselfs is just beyond beautiful. It's sad he had to go but also, thank you for what you did and for what everything you did continues to do.

This poor struggling/lost soul! I hate to say this, but, he's still in a bad way. Not because of the way he looks, but, because he has no vitality or life in his voice. I’m surprised he NEVER turned to heroin, or fentanyl. He is so so so strong and lucky for that. Unless that was something he didn’t want to share. Thank you Matthew, so much for getting better, making addicts look better; and not to be so shamed, bullied, and looked at like terrible people who actively choose to do bad things. He could have gotten better, kept it private for his reputation, and never given back. Thank you Matthew and I hope you rest in peace. I have never felt more grateful for a book in my hands when I walked out of the book shop with this memoir in my hands. Your book changed my life. Just because addiction was your life doesn’t mean it will always be. He with all of us- helps me- be, and also it’s not my place to judge. May we all continue to hold each other up and care for each-other. I will always have scars no matter how long I live- I drink way too much- but your story gives me a little bit of hope for the future.

Me too. My heart breaks for this wonderful man. He has made soooo many people laugh and feel happy. And now we know the torment he's experienced. And he didn't deserve it. As an Addict, I struggled with sobriety for years and convinced myself that I could quit anytime! Lying to myself was easy and eventually lying to other people was even easier. There wasn’t one specific moment where I felt was the tipping point. There were thousands of moments and I would lie & steal to get that next fix. But, you’re chasing something that you will never get. That euphoria that you felt the 1st time. I destroyed so many relationships and hurt so many people. I did rehab, inpatient & outpatient and it never kept. I couldn’t stay sober. I finally hit rock bottom. Actually, it was below rock bottom. I realized, I couldn’t stay sober before because I was doing it for other people. I woke up after a 3 month binder and as I was looking in the mirror I didn’t recognize the person staring back at me. I had this unbelievable moment of clarity and I knew, finally I was ready. I was ready to stop living this way and I was so ashamed of who I had become. Shame is a powerful motivator and I knew if I kept living this way it was going to kill me. I’m a combat veteran who had survived Iraq. Survived getting shot and blown up twice. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but there was this force pushing me to live a life of sobriety. Addict is such an ugly label to live with. The road was long, painful, uncomfortable and exhausting. It was worth it. I’ve been sober for 10 years and I still live with it today. I still go to meetings and try to help as many people as I can along the way. Sobriety is not a solo process. I have had a lot of help from a lot of people. Addiction is terrible disease. It’s the first thought when you wake up and the last thought before bed. For anyone struggling know you are stronger than your addiction.
I just finished watching the full interview and it was extremely touching. If you haven't watched it please do so and have a few tissues by your side. We all watched him in movies and his famous show Friends but no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors. It was hard to hear his voice and speech change but it was wonderful to see Matthew Perry where he is at at this present moment in his life. Addiction is so, so awful. I remember watching these interviews last year when his book came out. His addiction was a monster. He suffered so terrible. I wanted so badly to believe he could make it through, but I also was very scared that he wouldn’t. I’m so sad today. I don’t know why he died. His body may have given up. I think when his book came out, he really was in a strong place. He really wanted to give back. You can see and feel that in these interviews from last fall. RIP, Matthew.

Chandler was by far the funniest on the show. It is crazy that Matthew Perry pulled this off while struggling a drug and alcohol addiction. The ones that make us laugh, are usually the ones dying on the inside. I hope he is recovering, and wish him joy and happiness, Thank you for all the laughs Matthew.

For longterm users who become chronic addicts, medical maintenance is often the best option. I know Perry must have good physicians so it blows my mind that he'd be in rehab all these times. At the point we can medically detox you while unconscious under anesthesia, then we can give you medical maintenance to stop future cravings, & add a treatment that prevents you from being able to get high. You don't have to continue going through this cycle of pain.
It was obvious he wasnt sober in this interview. If you have dealt with addiction you know what it looks like. RIP Matthew. You had it all but all of it had you, unfortunately.

Thank you, Matthew Perry for sharing your story. The misconception about an addict is that you chose to be an addict when you did not. My sibling suffered from alcohol and drug abuse and passed recently. The 70's-80's told you it was the addict's fault and that is not true, I was very pissed at him for many years. I tell my kids that some people have a "red light" or a "green light" you don't know what yours will be. For the families of addicts, just love and love more and then love and love more. We all need more of that.
Beautifully said and as a recovering alcoholic myself (3 years sober....but I still struggle) I really appreciate people like you with open minds & open hearts. I'd give ANYTHING to not be an addict. Seriously, ANYTHING to have that "start over" button and never have that first drink, that first pill, that first smoke... When Matthew Perry talks about how your disease (or demon, as I see it) waits to get you alone....oh my, that struck a nerve with me because he's 💯 spot on! I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that in my addiction, I was most dangerous, most drunk or high, most at the point of losing my life when I was alone in my bedroom, able to indulge in my addiction without anyone around me to judge me or stop me. I thought I was in control and that I could shut the world out and hide my addiction.... turns out everyone knew, I was only fooling myself and my loved ones were super scared for me. 💜 I can only imagine that other addicts have maybe experienced the same scenario, mindset, etc. while your brain and full self is actively engulfed in the disease. I'm extremely blessed to have a loving & supporting family and network, just as it sounds like you are to your loved one. 💜 I'm so very sorry for your loss! I pray for your loved one, for you, for others that suffer from this awful disease and for the families/friends who love the addict. I don't get it at all. 99% of my family are drug/alcohol addicts. The smell of alcohol makes me sick to my stomach. Drugs just get in the way of taking care of your kids. I only have one priority in life, to raise these lil people. I am devastated when I make a small mistake. How do you just leave them behind to serve your interests? I hope everyone heals, but I'm watching the video to gain insight.

@@YagwitOGI guess it's about having a addictive personality. I have smoked cigarettes many in social circles during college to fit with the group but hated it. Luckily I never got addicted to it to start on my own. But for lot of people few drinks, smokes etc. Will have then craving for more

People have to realize that addiction is not a single choice! It is a hard battle against emotional pain. Addiction is not the problem, it is the solution for them!

I’m Brazilian and I came to the US in 1987. In 2002 I was living in Florida and working and I had some pane and someone at work a older lady handed me a strong pain pill and that day at 19 years old everything changed. I’m 42 today and trying to get sober. I have too many stories that listening to this makes me cry

I read the book. And as a retired paramedic, let me tell you, when he said he would stop doing drugs because he didn’t want to have a colostomy bag for the rest of his life. He’s absolutely right. You don’t want that. And everything that goes along with it. He really struggled, and I hope he can stay clean. We also need to remember that he is very famous he can afford the best treatment - not everybody is so lucky.
I just finished his book. What a bunch of whining bullshit. My husband had the same operation due to diverticulitis, and a perforated colon - close to going into sepsis. 4” of his colon removed and a colostomy bag for 9 months. He recovered from the operation on nothing but Tylenol. His ostomy bag never “Exploded” because he took care of it properly. He was grateful to still be alive. Not once did he ever whine or “poor me.” He was a total champ. His reversal operation - same - Tylenol. Nothing more. Many people have to live with ostomy bags for life.

I am in the medical field and most if not all post op pts require way more than Tylenol. Any you are wasting your time trying to impress me that your husband is some kind of hero. I am not impressed.

Someone caring, a sense of humor, beautiful inside and out, someone who can go back and forth with him. He said he's not scared anymore of receiving love and will ask for more. I was never a Friends Fan but I've seen quite a few Interviews and Podcasts with Matty and, a wonderful human and what he did for People like me or others in Situations they shouldn't and ultimately can't face themselfs is just beyond beautiful. It's sad he had to go but also, thank you for what you did and for what everything you did continues to do.

Strong and lucky aren’t really words to describe MP. He’s dead after 15 rehab stints.
This is honestly so soul-crushing for me to see and read because I have always found so much comfort in the show and especially in the way Matthew Perry played the role of Chandler ..I am so happy that Matthew got his strength back and decided to write this book. I have never felt more grateful for a book in my hands when I walked out of the book shop with this memoir in my hands. Thank you Matthew for sharing this vulnerable time with everyone and explaining your darkest moments which I know will help so many others who are suffering. ❤❤

Your book changed my life. Just because addiction was your life doesn’t mean it will always be. He with all of us- helps me- be, and also it’s not my place to judge. May we all continue to hold each other up and care for each-other. I will always have scars no matter how long I live- I drink way too much- but your story gives me a little bit of hope for the future.

As an Addict, I struggled with sobriety for years and convinced myself that I could quit anytime! Lying to myself was easy and eventually lying to other people was even easier. There wasn’t one specific moment where I felt was the tipping point. There were thousands of moments and I would lie & steal to get that next fix. But, you’re chasing something that you will never get. That euphoria that you felt the 1st time. I destroyed so many relationships and hurt so many people. I did rehab, inpatient & outpatient and it never kept. I couldn’t stay sober. I finally hit rock bottom. Actually, it was below rock bottom. I realized, I couldn’t stay sober before because I was doing it for other people. I woke up after a 3 month binder and as I was looking in the mirror I didn’t recognize the person staring back at me. I had this unbelievable moment of clarity and I knew, finally I was ready. I was ready to stop living this way and I was so ashamed of who I had become. Shame is a powerful motivator and I knew if I kept living this way it was going to kill me. I’m a combat veteran who had survived Iraq. Survived getting shot and blown up twice. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but there was this force pushing me to live a life of sobriety. Addict is such an ugly label to live with. The road was long, painful, uncomfortable and exhausting. It was worth it. I’ve been sober for 10 years and I still live with it today. I still go to meetings and try to help as many people as I can along the way. Sobriety is not a solo process. I have had a lot of help from a lot of people. Addiction is terrible disease. It’s the first thought when you wake up and the last thought before bed. For anyone struggling know you are stronger than your addiction.
I just finished watching the full interview and it was extremely touching. If you haven't watched it please do so and have a few tissues by your side. We all watched him in movies and his famous show Friends but no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors. It was hard to hear his voice and speech change but it was wonderful to see Matthew Perry where he is at at this present moment in his life. God bless you and may the Lord continue to give you the strength you need to continue each day and all who are suffering from drug addiction alcohol addiction Etc.

Addiction is so, so awful. I remember watching these interviews last year when his book came out. His addiction was a monster. He suffered so terrible. I wanted so badly to believe he could make it through, but I also was very scared that he wouldn’t. I’m so sad today. I don’t know why he died. His body may have given up. I think when his book came out, he really was in a strong place. He really wanted to give back. You can see and feel that in these interviews from last fall. RIP, Matthew.

Chandler was by far the funniest on the show. It is crazy that Matthew Perry pulled this off while struggling a drug and alcohol addiction. The ones that make us laugh, are usually the ones dying on the inside. I hope he is recovering, and wish him joy and happiness, Thank you for all the laughs Matthew.

This is your wake up call
For longterm users who become chronic addicts, medical maintenance is often the best option. I know Perry must have good physicians so it blows my mind that he'd be in rehab all these times. At the point we can medically detox you while unconscious under anesthesia, then we can give you medical maintenance to stop future cravings, & add a treatment that prevents you from being able to get high. You don't have to continue going through this cycle of pain.

Thank you, Matthew Perry for sharing your story. The misconception about an addict is that you chose to be an addict when you did not. My sibling suffered from alcohol and drug abuse and passed recently. The 70's-80's told you it was the addict's fault and that is not true, I was very pissed at him for many years. I tell my kids that some people have a "red light" or a "green light" you don't know what yours will be. For the families of addicts, just love and love more and then love and love more. We all need more of that.
Beautifully said and as a recovering alcoholic myself (3 years sober....but I still struggle) I really appreciate people like you with open minds & open hearts. I'd give ANYTHING to not be an addict. Seriously, ANYTHING to have that "start over" button and never have that first drink, that first pill, that first smoke...
When Matthew Perry talks about how your disease (or demon, as I see it) waits to get you alone....oh my, that struck a nerve with me because he's 💯 spot on! I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that in my addiction, I was most dangerous, most drunk or high, most at the point of losing my life when I was alone in my bedroom, able to indulge in my addiction without anyone around me to judge me or stop me. I thought I was in control and that I could shut the world out and hide my addiction.... turns out everyone knew, I was only fooling myself and my loved ones were super scared for me. 💜 I can only imagine that other addicts have maybe experienced the same scenario, mindset, etc. while your brain and full self is actively engulfed in the disease.
I'm extremely blessed to have a loving & supporting family and network, just as it sounds like you are to your loved one. 💜 I'm so very sorry for your loss! I pray for your loved one, for you, for others that suffer from this awful disease and for the families/friends who love the addict. I don't get it at all. 99% of my family are drug/alcohol addicts. The smell of alcohol makes me sick to my stomach. Drugs just get in the way of taking care of your kids. I only have one priority in life, to raise these lil people. I am devastated when I make a small mistake. How do you just leave them behind to serve your interests?

@@YagwitOGI guess it's about having a addictive personality. I have smoked cigarettes many in social circles during college to fit with the group but hated it. Luckily I never got addicted to it to start on my own. But for lot of people few drinks, smokes etc. Will have then craving for more

I’m Brazilian and I came to the US in 1987. In 2002 I was living in Florida and working and I had some pane and someone at work a older lady handed me a strong pain pill and that day at 19 years old everything changed. I’m 42 today and trying to get sober. I have too many stories that listening to this makes me cry

Mr. Perry, I wish you all the luck in the world against your battle with narcs and alcohol! I had the same addiction to Lortab 10, about twice the strength of Vicodin, but am 52 now and have long since overcome it in my 30's.

I read the book. And as a retired paramedic, let me tell you, when he said he would stop doing drugs because he didn’t want to have a colostomy bag for the rest of his life. He’s absolutely right. You don’t want that. And everything that goes along with it. He really struggled, and I hope he can stay clean. We also need to remember that he is very famous he can afford the best treatment - not everybody is so lucky.
I just finished his book. What a bunch of whining bullshit. My husband had the same operation due to diverticulitis, and a perforated colon - close to going into sepsis. 4” of his colon removed and a colostomy bag for 9 months. He recovered from the operation on nothing but Tylenol. His ostomy bag never “Exploded” because he took care of it properly. He was grateful to still be alive. Not once did he ever whine or “poor me.” He was a total champ. His reversal operation - same - Tylenol. Nothing more. Many people have to live with ostomy bags for life.

I am in the medical field and most if not all post op pts require way more than Tylenol. Any you are wasting your time trying to impress me that your husband is some kind of hero. I am not impressed.
