Simon Finfer explains the future of sepsis treatment focusing on the life after surviving sepsis. Sepsis is the life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection damages its own tissues and organs. It can lead to shock, failure of multiple organs, and death. Organ failure and death are more likely if sepsis is not recognised early and not treated promptly.
Sepsis is the leading cause of death from infection around the world and contributes to or causes half of all deaths occurring in hospitals in the USA. Many people who survive severe sepsis recover completely and their lives return to normal. But some people, especially those who had pre-existing chronic diseases, may experience permanent organ damage, the common problems that afflict those who have recovered from sepsis have been termed the post-sepsis syndrome.
Longer term effects of sepsis are extensive. They include sleep disturbance including insomnia and nightmares. People experiences hallucinations, flashbacks and panic attacks. Muscle and joint pain occur, which can be severe and disabling. Similarly, functional impairments such as extreme tiredness and fatigue, inability to concentrate and impaired cognition occur. These effects even extend to a loss of confidence and self-belief.
The global medical community has improved sepsis survival. Because of that, Simon contends that all these long-term effects of sepsis must be paid attention. The current trials overwhelmingly look at survival. The future of research therefore should include post-sepsis outcomes. For instance, Simon asks the question - are these long-term effects due to sepsis, or rather, are they due to being in the ICU.
Simon discusses the future of sepsis care. Specifically, he discusses the idea of post-sepsis care and follow up. Much like there is respiratory follow up following an acute episode of respiratory disease, Simon believes there needs to be dedicated care for sepsis survivors. As he explains, the acute treatment of sepsis is the beginning of the road.

I’m a 6 time sepsis survivor! 5 times in a year and a half. Went into septic shock on Oct 28 2020 and as I got up and had a rare type of spinal stroke. Since that day I haven’t been able to to put any weight on my feet. It’s been a very long road with close to (200 days in hospital) and still a very long way away from walking. But I will never give up!

As a sepsis survivor, also in 2018, and then later, contracting Covid and having several other comorbid conditions, I keep pushing myself harder and harder, thinking that if I can’t just keep pushing my body will finally do what I wanted to. Unfortunately, I’ve had to find out the hard way while I try not to let it all keep me down and I do try and do a lot of activities to keep myself engaged, I have to get 78 hours of sleep and a 2 to 3 hour nap during the day in order to function. It’s severely limited my ability to do a lot of my chores, as well as to go out and socialize which can make things very lonely.

When I was discharged from the hospital after being treated for sepsis, I never knew what to expect afterwards. The recovery and lasting effects are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. Patients need to be educated about the possible residual effects.

Exactly, I was discharged from the hospital only a week ago and my family is already wondering when I’m going back to work and they think I’m lazy because some days I feel too weak to walk. This is a very serious thing and recovery could take weeks or months.

I had sepsis shock in Nov 2023. I refused all medication except antibiotic, infusions & other supplements. My surgeon was good, removed much more than the abscess. The wound was like a gunshot wound, & the vacuum machine and experienced hands of Wound Sisters were excellent. I requested more antibiotics to have peace of mind. I continued fiction reading in ICU (it was the worst ICU in South Africa. I don’t know to what extent theSLE condition I have for 40 years assisted in my recovery. I got back to driving & working after 3 weeks. Best wishes to those who are recovering. My case was similar & as serious to other Sepsis patients. At age 65, my recovery was simply miraculous. Also I have severe allergies to 70 % of drugs so there was no scope for trial & error treatment, others around me were getting a cocktail of drugs. Please medical professionals do not make assumptions cos each patient is unique.

As a sever sepsis survivor, it is not just in part the related effects from the sepsis itself. I have lasting damage from the huge spectrum of drugs used on me to survive it in itself. Vanco has caused hearing loss, short term memory loss, I have lots of issues simply from the cocktail of antibiotics used on me in the high doses needed to keep me alive. That is also something that has to be factored in.

Feeling grateful to be as healthy as I am after seeing this. I also survived septic shock and a long ICU stay.

I don't know what to do... I had to diagnose myself Septic. The ER allowed the infection to fester for a year. I'm post septic but my symptoms weren't normal. I never got a fever. My temp dropped to 97-96. My heart rate was either extremely low or high. I was prediabetic and every doctor has told me it's normal. I can't get my primary to diagnose me with Post Sepsis Syndrome. I can't focus to play a video game. I'm not easily winded but now I can't do my basic chores or walk or move too much or my Heart rate hits 150+. My heart rate laying in bed can even be 130. I have no want to do anything. Every little thing that brought me joy is dull. I feel Dread. Guilt. Embarrassment... I keep being told I'm fine and normal. Before sepsis I mentally disabled. Now I just don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do. I'm 27 and even with meds I cannot control my mental and physical illness. I want to sue the ER but I'm told the ER was legal in letting me almost die. They knew I was bad because I kept going back every other week for a year. I was diagnosed terminal and they still didn't want to help.

sepsis is something which is hard to manage if you don't understand it, I always feel hopeless when I remembered a mother who died after we managed to do ceasarin section successfully. unfortunately she developed sepsis later. her death shocked me up to today.
... there for I urged all medical professionals to be serious when they hear the word sepsis.

Having survived Sepsis and MOF, I live without long term memory of my life before Sepsis. In addition, physical activity like yard work is out of the question. I cannot concentrate long enough to read more than one or two pages at a time and had to accept a demotion in my profession. My speech is affected and can be difficult to find the right word. To be honest, I am not sure it is survival if you lose everything you built in your life prior to sepsis.

Having just had sepsis dec15, 2023 after going to va a week before telling me it was just a virus and sending me home I ended up breaking out in a sweat barely able to make it to the bed I had my mother in law call 911 (thankfully she was home in the bathroom next to my bedroom which I thank God every day) I ended up in the er then a cat scan was done. With that they noticed a hole in my stomach developed from a hiatal hernia. I ended up in emergency surgery and half way through had to stop cause my blood pressure was too low so they stabilized me and the next day finished the surgery. I remained in a coma 3 days and finally woke up in icu not knowing that 3 days had passed. They didn’t expect me to make it through the night but I did. I thank God everyday!

I am a sepsis survivor and am still trying to get my life back in order. I have lost my hearing from the antibiotics given to save my life. I am going for physiotherapy as I lost most of the muscle in my thighs and arms. I was in an induced coma in icu for 40 days and 20 days in a ward trying to wake up. I can’t remember 55 days of my life. I look ok but am weak and cannot concentrate on things too much. I wish a new antibiotic can be formulated that doesn’t cause hearing loss.

I survived septic shock intubated,AFib, transplant kidney affected loss my memory of it, 2 wks recovery in hospital. Since being out been to emergency room for rectal bleeding because had procedure to remove a stint for gallstones and was taking blood for AFib. It was a infected gallstone that caused my septic shock. Also went to er for an UTI. I'm nervous i have upcoming gallbladder removal surgery, dealing with AFib heart that may have to be shocked back into normal rate. I'm happy i survived but it looks scary ahead!

I had severe sepsis in January 2023. Spent 80 days in hospital. I had 2 spinal surgeries cuz sepsis was in my bones. I had open heart surgery and needed a new mechanical aortic heart valve. My old valve was attached by 20% sutures. I had my aortic root and mitral valve repaired. I had no BP in er and was in multi organ failure. I survived and was told I'm a miracle. Sepsis took my rn career from me and so much more. I said the old me died and a new me left the hospital. I was dependent on all ADLs. 6mths rehab. I'm 16mths s/p sepsis. I now have post Sepsis syndrome. My memory is not good. I now have macular degeneration from sepsis. I have severe osteoarthritis everywhere. I had my 3rd back surgery too. Now I have a consult for my left shoulder pain and limitation. Xray reveals necrotic humerus head with severe deformities from impaired blood flow from sepsis. I would love to join you on stage when you do sepsis presentations. I believe my reason of being here is to spread sepsis awareness, but unsure I can do this by myself. I enjoyed your video and cried too. Thank you for your presentation.
