I'm an American who lived in Vancouver BC for 5 years. I enjoyed my time there, but there was one thing that got to me after my first year of residence. Being from a South Orange County beach city, I missed the sun. So as much as I loved Vancouver, I missed home even more. So you can't blame Shohei for wanting to remain in Southern California. I mean given a choice between sun and warmth/dry versus overcast cloud cover and cold/wet, that's a no brainer (just look at all the snowbirds who escape to the "sunny south" during the winter season).
