I love Giant Bomb!
Just starting this series now after 100%'ing Sunshine. Took me slightly over 13 hours and 30 minutes and had a great time (outside of the Watermelon, Pachinko and Chucking challenges). Eager to start watching what will surely be a brisk and jubilant playthrough for GBeast.
why didn't they measure out the gumballs before they started so they got a better ratio, I understand that the main problem is the gumball machine was too large. still enjoying the video.
I actually find it kind of funny that Dan keeps suggesting the jump and spin method to clean yourself off when literally the easiest way to clean yourself in this game is to just jump in the nearest source of water.
It feels so weird to think Dan is the sanest one in a discussion...

I always enjoyed super mario sunshine and it wasn’t until I was watching this that I heard this game was polarizing..
Also as far as the controls debate goes I feel like galaxy is the best so far, but these controls were what lead to galaxy controls

I always find myself questioning reality when I agree with Dan, I really enjoyed this game back in the day. It's not worth the scorn Alex is pouring on it. I do realise he might be playing it up for the camera but I don't know if I can take an entire series with so much eye rolling from every except Dan.

Having completed 64 and sunshine back to back about a year ago - I have to say sunshine improves mildly on both controls and camera... However, I can concede that the improvements are slight and by the time sunshine came out it probably wasn't enough to meet expectations set by games like Jak and Sly

Great game, the hunt for the blue coins sucked and the non-water pack bonus levels were the precursor to Super Mario Galaxy.

the controls are very tight... I don't understand how they struggled so hard @_@. I'm sure they've been improved on since 2002 but still lol. it isnt worse than mario 64
d4nnyQQ I know!!! It's a good game and it has really good controls my 10 year old self got the controls really quick.
Larry Davis that explains everything. Some of their timing was just unbelievably bad. Like I've watched them play games that I know have inferior control schemes to sunshine where they performed more admirably
The controls aren't tight at all. You can eventually predict what motions will do what in the game if you play it a lot, and you can get pretty good with the controls, but all of your initial instincts make you overcompensate your actions in reaction to the wonky physics. There are weird things where the physics of objects you interact with will suddenly bug out, or different surfaces will exert a different force on your character that you have to adjust to. I always found it crazy how bad the rotating cubes on secret levels feel. You change Mario's momentum even a little bit and you are flying off to your death. Against any sense of logic, Mario can run up almost completely vertically until the block's surface gets close to a 90 degree angle, then you are thrown off. Normally you think you need to do x but you just end up doing y.
The basic movements is tight in Sunshine. That said the camera really is bad in Sunshine. Not that N64 had it any better, but Sunshine relies way more to its camera with the stages and shooting of water. Imo Mario 64 long jump that was brought back in Galaxy brings new addition to the flow of movement when you are comfortable the controls. I don't think 64 looses on the feel at all to Sunshine.I do kind of agree with Jeff that if Sunshine did not rely so heavily on the water stuff, rather rely on tight controls with additional movements, and Sunshine would be universally thought to be amazing. I really like the world of Sunshine, more than I do Galaxy.
As much as I love Mario64, it HURTS how clearly overrated it is due to nostalgia. The controls and camera are in no way tighter than Sunshine. I just played all of the 3D Mario games again back-to-back earlier this year and 64 was without contest the wonkiest of the bunch. Sunshine has some isolated problems, but it is wholisticly better than 64.
I've never played this game before yet I know exactly what to do and was never confused with what was going on.

This is absolutely painful to watch. I'm hoping for their sake they have lag issues, but having so many issues with the red coins just after having all those issues with the ropes the shine before, there's no way the controls are that bad.

As someone who has played a lot of sunshine I agree. It's very frustrating watching them miss so bad
pik man I'll concede that they do eventually get the hang of it, but watching them tackle those first few piranhas was like passing a kidney stone

Sunshine is the best 3D Mario so far. It's also the best speedgame of any mainline Mario game RPGs excluded.

Galaxy, Galaxy 2, 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and Odyssey are all better than Sunshine. However, Sunshine is still a great, fun game. It's just not the best Mario game by far.
I think GB crew, minus Dan, is so wrong about this game. Sunshine is amazing. It's pretty weird, but the platforming was soooooo much better than 64n, especially those little challenge levels.

The negativity about the game is pretty annoying. I don't want to watch if someone's constantly dumping on it (and it's a game I really like!)
Oh boy, based on some of these comments it seems that single Cuphead gameplay video is the new "thing" for easily outraged "gamers" to incessantly piss and moan about isn't it?

There's been one comment on it so far... but think of it this way; if I wanted some intake on the latest hot car, would I listen to someone who keeps dumping the clutch and stalling, or someone who can actually get the car from one point to another without making a fool of himself? You can bash "easily outraged" gamers all you want, but you can't deny that the cuphead video wasn't atrocious and a complete lack of professionalism.
Afaik it was a guy named Ian Cheong on twitter who actually brought the video to people's attention. Also in reply to the original comment; it wasn't just "that single Cuphead gameplay video" that has people outraged... Dean Takahashi (the man in the cuphead video) also called Mass Effect "Mass Defect" because the combat in the game was flawed. However here's the kicker; Dean was entirely unaware that the game had a talent tree and played through the entire game without assigning a single skill point. But let's not incessantly piss and moan here...
