The biggest lesson from both the Texans and Browns in their early days as expansion teams is that you should never take a quarterback at #1 if you're an expansion team. Both David Carr and Tim Couch got killed behind bad offensive lines and never really had a chance. Couch at least took the Browns to the playoffs which probably makes him their 3rd best QB post expansion behind Baker and Derek Anderson.

It’s amazing that a team could have so much talent like future Hall of Famer JJ Watt a top 5 receiver of the 2000s in Andre Johnson a top 5 receiver of the 2010s in DeAndre Hopkins and 5 seasons with the greatest punter in NFL history in Shane Lechler And yet still have such little success I guess The lions and Texans are Where talented careers go to be wasted
My first thought was they'll never leave. Then remembered that the Oilers left because we were sick and tired of Bud Adams' shit. Hopefully, Cal McNair doesn't keep doing a crappy job or he gets replaced.
yeah those star players really helped in 2020.. texans will look good next year if mills works out, all these draft picks and 110 mil cap space next year
Short answer: early expansion team woes, and self-inflicted kneecapping. Every team is going to suck in the first few years, and it's even more frustrating for the Texans, since they have proven they CAN draft properly. As for the self-inflicted kneecapping, when Cal McNair took over football operations from his late father Robert, that was where I feel the Texans began their steep decline, especially after hearing about the power and ties Easterby has. How do we fix this? Getting rid of Easterby has to be the #1 priority. As long as he is around (and base his staff on how "faithful" they are), this team will never stand a chance, especially with the AFC South trending upwards (Titans are a contender, Colts can certainly pull off a surprise, Jaguars are a wild card, but it's always the unpredictable ones you should be wary of).
The Panthers and Jags were "too good" for expansion teams so the NFL changed the rules a bit and the Texans started out reeeeaaally weak. Definitwely didnt help.
@@jgsmith99 Unless Easterby gets embroiled in scandal, he's untouchable. Plus, I highly doubt anyone has the financial means to purchase ownership off the McNairs. Just my cynical opinion.
Has anyone pointed out that the 12th pick used to pick Watson in 2017 was from the Browns lol So it's like the last 5 years never happened. This honestly makes me feel so much better as a miserable Texans fan
To this day I still don't get why didn't BOB trade Hopkins for Fitzgerald, he was only paid 11 million which was miles cheaper than Hopkins and even if past his prime was a way more reasonable trade guy for Hopkins. Fast forward, I think the Packers trading Davante Adams for only a first and second rounder is slightly worse than what BOB got for Hopkins, a late 1st rounder is barely an improvement than the sole 2nd rounder the Texans got from the Hopkins trade, especially when they didn't even get a talented player from the Raiders and are instead putting their eggs in a basket for some out of college kid in a cursed #22 overall pick.
as a texan fan i disagree, would not want jags jets browns lions or raiders, feel like i am missing a team or two, unless your 7 years old and 2 years new to the nfl it would make sense to pick those other teams
Nitpicks: Say what you will about O'Brien, but Osweiler wasn't his choice. It was Rick Smith, who signed him without consulting BoB about it. Similarly, Watson was another Smith choice, because his seat was on fire because he'd failed to properly address the QB situation since at least 2012. As far as the rest of it goes, Houston was always due for a rebuild. The wear was beginning to show during Kubiak's last year, when it became clear that the team could draft stars, but couldn't draft depth if their lives depended on it. By the time this recent collapse happened, the majority of stars were still the same guys from the Kubiak era - Watt, Hopkins, Mercilus, Clowney, etc. Easterby's just an easy target. Nobody can point out exactly what he does outside of that SI article, and I'll eat my hat if O'Brien's camp didn't have anything to do with that. It was the first stop on the "O'Brien redemption tour" which had people claiming that "Coach BoB did nothing wrong, it was just GM BoB".
Bill O’Brien is directly responsible for the recent collapse. However they were the best team in the AFC South for the 2010’s. Some idiots also seem to think the team is being run by BOB, Caseiro has made a tonne of great moves since he took over. The pathetic slander against the Texans makes no sense to anyone who actually pays attention to the team. They will turn the team around within 3 years, no question.
BOB "directly" responsible for the recent collapse yet they were SB contenders before Jack got there. Not saying he isn't to blame but the bulk wasn't him
They were the best team in the South when the South was the worst division in the AFC, perhaps all of football depending on how you feel about the NFC East. Bill's teams always flopped against real competition.
@@landonpatton7997 to address both of you guys, BOB made a lot of horrible signings and trades as GM, but he was also a very bad play caller at the NFL level. The Texans consistently had bottom 10 red zone efficiency, and failed hard whenever big moments came. But the guy in this video completely discounted all the losses the Texans took in FA after 2019 and the flop against the chiefs. They needed to start the rebuild last year but were set back by the Tunsil move, also BOBs fault.
@@Hunter-os5yx and like I said he deserves blame but not all of it. 2018 and beyond for BOB was a power struggle with Easterby to were he couldn't focus on the field. Brian Gain could have easily franchised the honey badger and traded for Melvin Gordon like they wanted to, ran it back and seen plenty of success. Easterby didn't want BOB nor Gain there.
@@landonpatton7997 you must think the salary cap doesn’t exist. Hopkins was asking for a 12 million a year increase on his salary to 22 mil, Matthieus contract tagged would have been huge, plus Melvin Gordon no chance. They also lost Kareem Jackson, DJ reader, Wilkinson, Lamar Miller etc etc. The defence now had a hole at every position, which is why Caseiro loaded the team up with average guys who still had potential. They found a couple gems, Kamu Hill and Kirskey good last year and the defence saw major improvements under Lovie Smith. Went from 31 in takeaways to 9th.
Well I'll try. 1 the afc south has and probably always will be a weak division. 2 the Texans have the most cap space. 3 they have honestly a decent track record of drafts with guys like Watt, Hopkins, Johnson, Williams, Kareem Jackson, mercuiles. I'll also be truthful I have probably watched 3 Texans games over the last 5 years and don't really know this regime too well, but if it's anything like the last I do have hope.
The Lions made a deal with the NFL, they get boat loads of money to be bad. They also won 10 championships before the SB. So if you're saying the Texans will win 10 championships, than I'm game.
@@AutoArtemAuto I swear they made some sort of deal with the devil to get that legendary 116 win season, but they didn't read the fine print saying they'll never win again unless they win it all.
How is this video only 12 minutes long? I figure it would take at least half an hour to cover all the reasons that the Texans are such a dumpster fire.
The Oilers may have left Houston, but their bad luck remained and would stay even when a new team popped up in the city. Don’t believe me? Just ask the Browns. Also, fancy that the Texans panicked and hired Lovie much like how the Astros panicked and hired Dusty Baker. Your turn, Rockets.
I hate that people use the assault case not being a criminal case as a shield for Deshawn Watson. For a criminal case you have to prove beyond a doubt that he is guilty. It is ridiculously hard to prove rape and sexual assault cases to that point. In fact, less than 1% of sexual assaults lead to criminal conviction. So unless you think that 99% of sexual assault victims are lying, him not being tried as a criminal says more about the justice system than it does about his innocence.

ill save you all about twelve minutes: the answer is Bill O'Brien
Thank you i destroyed this team with my bare hands, off to the next team
For all the fans of young teams that made the playoffs. Just know. Shits never sweet damn sure ain’t a given.
As a Texans fan I just sigh as I click on these videos
Please don't effing blame David Carr.
I remember the days in elementary school when everyone somewhat loved the Texans…I wonder if they still love them.
I guarantee they still do
@@ranelgallardo7031 hopefully so…
it was my college days when people loved them, when i was a kid they sucked, and were new.
Let's hope caserio rebuilds what bill obrien destroyed
Imagine they leave Houston and once they made it to their new city, they become Super Bowl champions
I don’t think I would be able to take that. That would hurt too much
My first thought was they'll never leave. Then remembered that the Oilers left because we were sick and tired of Bud Adams' shit. Hopefully, Cal McNair doesn't keep doing a crappy job or he gets replaced.
We will welcome the Texans to St. Louis💀
4-12 with star players in 2020...
4-13 with throwaway players and a 1st year head coach in 2021...
yeah those star players really helped in 2020.. texans will look good next year if mills works out, all these draft picks and 110 mil cap space next year
Calling back to another video, kinda weird that there are more giraffe-neck QBs in the NFL than left-handed QBs
they need to see over the line the long neck helps lol!!
Easterby is the biggest joke in all of sports right now.
Only topped by the Texans owner for hiring and promoting him.
Do you think Cal gets rid of Easterby or do we need new ownership (assuming it's doubtful Cal's mom replaces him)?
@@jgsmith99 Unless Easterby gets embroiled in scandal, he's untouchable. Plus, I highly doubt anyone has the financial means to purchase ownership off the McNairs. Just my cynical opinion.
i think easterby is still a problem but the biggest problem was me bill obrien, now nick caserio is the GM he is trying to rebuild what i destroyed
Yet how in 2006 Houston Dynamo FC won MLS Cup as an expansion team
lovie!!! thank you for the 2004-2011 bears and that outfit of bears greats
Has anyone pointed out that the 12th pick used to pick Watson in 2017 was from the Browns lol
So it's like the last 5 years never happened. This honestly makes me feel so much better as a miserable Texans fan
March 16th 2001? Damn Deshaun been prowling
I mean 15 teams were interested in trading for Watson, yeah good luck with that Cleveland.
Mills to the Moon
Texans Superbowl 2023
My plan was to burn down the team, get rid of the best players and picks. Recovery won't happen till this or next year lol!!
FivePoints Vids for life!
As a Texans fan I even look to Lions fans and Browns fans and think “I wish I was in their shoes”
You want to wear cursed shoes? I'll let you wear mine for a bit.
as a texan fan i disagree, would not want jags jets browns lions or raiders, feel like i am missing a team or two, unless your 7 years old and 2 years new to the nfl it would make sense to pick those other teams
If you say 28 around a falcons fan they twitch a bit... if you say 23 around a texans fan they twitch a bit for different reasons
7:57 March 16, 2001? I think you’re 20 years off there lol. Watson was like 5-6 years old back then.
What do you mean? It’s February 2020, and we have Hopkins and JJ Watt and just went 11-5!
He said 2001😂 Watson would’ve been 5😂 whoopsies 🙈🫠🤣
My fav texans moment was last yr when they declined a penalty that would have made it 3rd and 10 and then punted. 😂😂😂
The Houston Texans are set to be the next Detroit Lions.
Change my mind.
The McNairs are friends with the Ford family so
Well I'll try.
@@Jordan19309 they went 4-13 with Mills and Taylor. They went 4-12 with Watson.......

The Texans destroyed JJ Watt's career like the Angles destroying Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani's.
just imagine having two generational players on your baseball team and never making the playoffs, that takes effort to be that bad.
@@SomeGuyNamedPhil The Seattle Mariners know that way too well.
@@AutoArtemAuto I swear they made some sort of deal with the devil to get that legendary 116 win season, but they didn't read the fine print saying they'll never win again unless they win it all.

nah pretty simple, i came in and destroyed this franchise when it was coming up, rick smith was a decent gm before me
The Oilers may have left Houston, but their bad luck remained and would stay even when a new team popped up in the city. Don’t believe me? Just ask the Browns. Also, fancy that the Texans panicked and hired Lovie much like how the Astros panicked and hired Dusty Baker. Your turn, Rockets.
Really? Have you seen the Rockets? The new owners a cheapskate and even with the draft picks might still be a horrible team for years to come
@@landonpatton7997 I meant it’s the Rockets’ turn to panic and hire someone on impulse ala the Astros and Texans.
Lovie was a great move and there is no evidence the Team wasnt going to hire both McCown and Flores.

Oh, a wild Brett Coloncancer appearance!
Mista McNair be sittin on da flo playin xbox in da facility 🤣👍💯
It’s a combination of incompetent coaches, bad ownership, bad drafting and awful trades. 👀🤷🏿🤦🏿

Bill O'Brien's tenure as head coach and GM was a rolling disaster the team will take decades to recover from. Even with him pissing away years of draft capital and making absolutely inexcusably bad trades, the Texans had a franchise quarterback they pissed off so bad he demanded a trade. Perhaps they are trying to win the LolCow of the decade award away from the Browns. So far, they have a powerful case.
