- The price of insulin is an overwhelmingly real problem for Type One Diabetics within the United States. Brooke Bennett describes all the ways that this price takes a toll on the lives of diabetics from the financial to the physical to the emotional. Bennett was diagnosed with Type One at 10 years old and since then has been figuring out how to not only live with a chronic illness but how to afford the cost of that illness. This talk focuses on one of the largest economic issues to fall between the cracks, leaving millions of diabetics struggling to afford a drug that they need to survive.
Brooke is a sophomore at Hope studying psychology and global health before medical school. She is from Romeo, Michigan. Brooke is excited about the writing process, and then refining and practicing her speech. She is a part of The Anchor, Spikeball club and is an RA. Once you started saying the names of the individuals, I literally got chills. It reminded me how I can empathize and recognize a situation like this, but to know their name is another level. It hurts. And that pain brings passion that fuels action. It makes me want to do something about it. Your speech was eye-opening. Thank you.

What a presentation, you did really well I got goosebumps the whole 16 minutes lol. I’m 24 and been diabetic since I was 13 years old. I sometimes struggle even finding insulin here in Palestine, and when I do, it is very expensive!
Have you tried changing your diet? Try the alkaline diet. Diabetes can be reversed.

Just turned 40 and the LADA type 1 hit me out of nowhere. Thankful for the german healthcare system, everything is covered. I‘m in shock about the prices in the US. I knew healthcare is extreme there, but this is criminal.
I was diagnosed LADA at 58, four years ago. Yes, US healthcare is a joke.
Being a 66 yo Dutch (type 2) diabetic myself and being dependent on insulin I can only say that the american prices for anything related to diabetes are criminal!!!
(All of my diabetes related expenses are covered by my mandatory (single payer) health care insurance; my "out-of-pocket" costs amount to €385 per YEAR ; my insurance premiums amount to roughly €2000 per YEAR and this covers everything medical including dental)

I lost my best friend to insulin rationing a year ago this month. I lost my cousin to it the year before. I have watched my dad struggle with his type two diabetes and his medications for it. I am truly sickened at the healthcare system of America. It is shameful to say the least. I hope not another person ever has to struggle with this disease.

God bless all you type 1 crusaders! I've been one in the US for 43 years, 2 heart attacks and open heart surgery, 6 bypasses later I'm blessed and thankful to be alive! Still it's been a Long, almost unfair road. The struggle is definitely real, but you have to make the best of it, some have it worse off than me. STAY STRONG my fellow diabetics!

I am. And have been for almost 25 years. This is Ted talk is peddling pure hysterics. Walmart makes it very affordable to effectively manage T1 or T2 diabetes.

👉The solution is to increase the competition in the pharmaceutical business, lower taxes or no taxes for that market, would create more competition, more quality and lower prices
I think the opposite: set a standardized price through Medicare negotiation each year and then charge 90% tax on any producer who charges above that defined price outside of Medicare/Medicaid.
Novalin R is $25 a vile from walmart. In many locales, you don't even need a prescription to buy it. Their test strips are 18 cents a piece.
@@brookebennett7703Nobody said Novalin was an analog insulin. Novalog is. And, I just found out that Walmart sells Novalog for $80 a vile directly without insurance coverage. Regarding the prescribing of specific brands "due to the fact ... better fits their specific needs", what are you talking about? Do you need fast acting or longer acting or rapid acting such as FIASP? It's all trial and error by your endo or whomever. What exactly is wrong with Novalin R at $25 a vile if you can't afford $200 a vile? Obviously your doctor should advise you before making any changes.
@@brookebennett7703 Novalin R is used for treating type 1 diabetes. I know type 1's who kept their BG under control for years prior to the availability of analog insulins. I just found out that Walmart also sells Novalog for $80 without insurance, but as you say, you do need a prescription as with almost all forms of insulin for human consumption.

Go to the pharmacy, try and pick some narcan up. Make sure you bring at least $100 if not $200, if they'll even dispense it to you.
Hi, I'm from Austria, Europe. I think we have one of the best medical systems in the world and a good solidary health insurance system in which everyone pays the same amount. With us EVERYONE gets a prescription for 6€ a drug, also insulin or diabetic drugs. I have often heard posts like yours and it always amazes me what prices you have to pay for insulin in the USA. Sorry, but I don't think you're the best country in the world...in many things, for example homeless people, no insurance if you lose your job, or if you lose your house or apartment. Here nobody stands with their children on the street and lives in a car. The best country in the world? Just so sorry for you and all the people who are dying from high insulin or drug prices...in one of the richest countries in the world. Greetings from Austria

I totally agree, but the title of this talk is pretty self-explanatory. Of course the outrageous price of insulin is a danger to diabetics.
$25 a vile for Novalin R from Walmart. Test strips 18 cents a piece. In Miami Dade and Broward counties, you don't even need a prescription. I seem to remember in Las Vegas when I needed emergency insulin, I didn't need a prescription there either for Novalin R.
Being thankful the insulin is almost free in Malaysia.
Why is the price so high in the USA?

because there is no public health system. it's all private.
the American way of life is low tax, little public intervention, few public institutions. what you earn is yours. if you get rich it's good for you. if you can't afford ... too bad.
France took the opposite route. we have many public services. but between 50 and 80% of our earnings go to the government (across various taxes . a strict minimum 50% for poorest people ). you need to work 4 time more to earn twice more.

As a type 1 since i was 13 now 56 i am ever so great-full to live in Australia. It has never been a problem to get insulin at a subsidized price even if i have worked all my life or i am a Invalid.
Recently i watched a video of a woman in Ukraine who was interviewed and she told how her elderly husband was buried in the front yard of there house. He died quickly when insulin was not available anymore due to the war happening right now.
All my family members have no idea how quick i would be GONE if i could not access INSULIN.
I think they have grown to think i will always be around but in a very short amount of time i would be gone without it.
On the other scale if my sugar goes to low i could be gone in a day. Thats been my life since i was 13.

A coworker and friend is type 1 and he told me all this I couldn't believe it it makes my heart break for him and everyone that's type 1
I’m a type 2, and my diabetes is very sadistic!! Not only do I have neuropathy in my toes but I got two small left toes amputated!!
Unlike a exgirlfriend( type2) who died of a direct causal heart attack, my type2 going to get me a piece at a time

One time I was in a government facility and they wouldn't give me the amount of insulin I typically require because it was too expensive and they didn't have enough stock to get me through it. Well that was 4 years ago and I ended up passing out after 3 days of not getting any blood sugar testing for insulin and after I collapsed and went into a coma they waited 4 hours before calling an ambulance. I was put back into a coma so I can slowly heal from all the damage that was done. I had a trach put in my throat because I was so swollen I couldn't breathe, because a part of dka is swelling of the body. When I finally became stabilized they had to ensure that I would not get pneumonia or aspirate water goes into the lungs because you can't swallow properly because the airway is too swollen, and understanding all that it was still torture not being able to eat or drink anything. I had to get nutrients from a feeding bag and couldn't drink water or anything. You never know how much you miss water until you don't have access to it because you're too sick to even have that. It was the worst experience of my life it was not my first time dealing with it but I now suffer severe PTSD from that time because I was hallucinating thinking that the nurses were trying to kill me and I kept trying to escape. I was dealing with delirium but I couldn't speak because of the trach so I couldn't tell anyone what was wrong with me and why are so scared. They ended up restraining me to the bed which made me more scared and I was in the ICU for a little over a month and then dropped down to a best critical level for another month. This is what happens to people when their insurance cancels on them after they turn 26 and you don't fill out the paperwork right away to get Medicaid if you are even lucky enough to qualify for it. This needs to change.
New drugs will hit the Diabetic market in 30 days or less. I urge everyone to write your congressional representatives and senators. Everyone has someone in their family. We must put maximum pressure on big pharma and the biggest buyer of pharmaceutical drugs, the U.S. Government.

I’m not sure which one of them is going to be the death of me… I also have depression and a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder… And I have no friends, I think the loneliness will kill me before any of the above when you get right down to it. I just would like to know what it’s like to be happy
Charlene, so sorry for your struggles. The depression, BPD and loneliness are just as serious as insulin. You have a lot on your plate. I hope you are getting help with all 4.

I'm lucky enough to be living in a country where insulin and most insulin pumps and cgm are fully covered by the healthcare system, and are always available. It's indeed hard to find the words to talk about the weight of diabetes in our life, but I relate to the way you talked about it ! Sometimes I compare it to a baby I can't get rid of, waking me up in the middle of the night with a high/low sugar alarm, forcing me to cook healthy meals, to always carry a bag with me (sugar and needles instead of diapers and toys !), to always plan ahead times away from home, ... so much things to always think about, I'm glad I don't have to worry about money on top of every thing else. I hope someday humans will come before benefits!
I can't imagine the emotional strength it takes to deal with all of the issues she has to deal with on a daily basis when it comes to her medical devices and injection's. I have my own health issues that I've had mostly since birth, but I can't fathom not being able to have a Frosty. It's amazing what I and so many others take for granted. I will do my best to never take the ability to have a simple ice cream for granted again.

We in India are provided medical card and free medicines. Insulin is also free through government hospitals and dispensaries. I never knew such a problem exists anywhere.

As an insulin dependent diabetic, married to an insulin dependent diabetic living with a mother who is a transplant recipient which caused her to become insulin dependent, I can attest to to high price we pay in our household for diabetes medications. It is a very profitable business. It is the reason pharmaceutical companies will never come up with a cure. Our healthcare system is FAR, FAR from perfect. The reasons our pharmaceutical companies charge such high prices though…are because they do the research that other countries which charge nothing for these drugs…do not yet they benefit from. Maybe if the rest of the world helped to pay for the research that only the US seems to shoulder, maybe Americans wouldn’t be the only ones giving their lives rationing insulin because of the cost.

When I first started in the pharmacy in the early 90s the price of insulin was $11.00 dollars a vial. I now suffer from MS ( multiple sclerosis) and it’s been a painful experience.
I have ms too. Diabetes is from high dose prednisone I've had when ms exacerbates. I agree, it's painful 😢

Sadly, this talk struck me the wrong way. It sounded like a desperate plea for aid from a third-world refugee. Except that the speaker is anything but. She's a privileged citizen of the richest and most powerful country in the world. She's enjoying the benefits of modern medical technology to prevail against a disease that-in her own words-would be a death sentence otherwise. Did I sense a profound sense of gratitude for all her blessings? Nope; only whining that it's more expensive in her country than in third-world India.
The medical situation in America is the direct consequence of the officials *_you_* have voted into power. You've deliberately chosen capitalism, small government, and unbridled profits-rather than affordable healthcare and living wages-as your ideology and way of life. You can't have both.
Feel free to move to India, honey. I and a billion others live here. I guarantee you, you won't be complaining about the cost of insulin anymore.

You know... I disagree, the price of that 1 frosty is not worth it and shouldn't be. What I have learned through my life is that we as humans were not meant to consume man made things, we are beings of the earth and from the earth we thrive, you don't need insulin. What you need is to change your diet and realize that you are way more important than what you eat. And if you disagree with me then you too are going to end up like the people she mentioned. Living off of drugs and medications and having a slow and anxious death...
Insulin is a vital hormone that allows the food you eat to be digested. It allows energy into your cells, and then your cells use that energy. No insulin? Your food doesn’t get digested. With no insulin, the sugar in your blood builds up-and more than just food influences the blood sugar: for example, stress raises the blood sugar. Having a cold can cause high blood sugar levels. It’s not just food. Without insulin, everyone would die. Without insulin, no one would be able to gain energy from the food they eat. And they would die from complications resulting from a toxic high blood sugar level. I encourage you to look into the well-documented and peer reviewed science about the purpose of insulin in the human body. It is as vital as any other hormone within us. You would be dead without insulin. Everyone needs it to function. No matter what anyone says. That is what the science says.

My son is T1D. I love and worry about him so much. We went through Humalog/Lantus pen dance, the Tandem/Dexcom dance. $245+ a month. The insulin is free, because he's under 26. Thank you, Doug Ford. (He's horrible.)

@@de.buffel How so? Which form of diabetes are you referring to? It's pretty simple, lower your consumption of carbohydrates and your HbA1c goes down.
