Kenneth Collins so am I, I enjoyed all of it the good times out weigh the bad. Rest in peace to Edna Wright lead songstress of the beautiful Honeycombs. I remember us dancing to this like yesterday.
Soul Train...man what great memories. Back when we heard a tune like this and just had to go buy it. That was a world now that longer exists. People were so polite and knew what REAL fun was.
geo ky I remember watching soul train when I was a young boy I'm 58 now I wish they would have reruns of that show I'm Caucasian love that classic soul music
I grew up watching soul train. Use to get up every Saturday to watch my cartoons and my soul train. I use to love the way everyone danced . i watched soul train until the early 90s.
At the peak of HoneyCone's popularity I was a fifth grader in a small town elementary school in Georgia. It was a crazy time. Desegregation, bussing, protests, marches, and even bomb threats at school every week. But all us kids, black and white, loved HoneyCone, The Supremes, Jackson 5, Freda Payne, etc. etc. Such great songs during a turbulent time. Seems like the music should have brought us all together as people.
@@57highland My favorite song back then was "Band of Gold." I traded "Joy to the World" (Three Dog Night?) to another kid for it. It drove my sister crazy because I set the record player to play it over and over and over, lol.
The Honey Cone was one of my favorite female groups of the 1970s!!! This song and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" were my favorite songs. When I found out that the lead singer, Edna Wright passed away yesterday, I was shocked!!! Her and her older sister, singer/actress Darlene Love were both one of a kind talents!!! RIP Ms. Edna. You and your voice will be missed!!!
The sistah on the end in the black dress (Shelly Clark) is the wife of of Earth, Wind and Fire co-founder and Bassist Verdine White (26 years and counting). I watched this episode on Aspire ("Magic" Johnson's cable TV venture) and had to find it on here. I love the choreography and Shelly and Carolyn's supporitng vocals blend excellent with Edna's lead vocals!! This group was RIGHT ON!!!!!!
Just a kid growing up in sharpstown, lived across the street from Sharpstown mall. Went there every day I could always get the clerk at the record shop to play this. Good 👍 memories from childhood.
Hey i was a little girl ,back when this came out ,and liked it,but im white ,my parents listened to alot of little Richard ,Sam Cooke and others always listen to the best though..Like the disco loved the ojays, and groups from the 70s,that were black, anyways still enjoy rocknroll my favorite ,always , but Sam Cooke my first real favorite, they played his album alot while growing up as a baby he was the one i remember the most...
james Hall Agreed. I said this to some else and it was misunderstood. There are many artists today who appreciate the artists that came before them but of course they get no regular airplay. However they don't match up to the groups or crooners of the 60-70's era. But through their own styles, singers like Jill Scott, Ledisi, Eric Roberson, Dwele, and others give homage to honey cone, marvin gaye, and all the others that came before them. They can't match them and don't claim to try, I think they just are trying to carry on the legacy left to black artists and prove REAL soul and R&B has no equal.
Well said, valid points. I am glad that some of the artist of today do pay respect to the talented artists of yesterday, and look to them for inspiration. And yes you're right real soul and R&B has no equal. It' a wonderful legacy created by those artist's of the past . Peace my brother !
So popular this song was in NYC in the early seventies! LOVE this record/song. This song was all over A.M. radio back in the day. Brings back many memories of those young years! They sang so well and their harmony was right on! Great mix of rock, soul & pop. Loved these ladies.........
@OnCloudNine62 I know what you mean. With all this so called "Music" know days I long for my childhood back and the good ole Soul music we use to listen and dance too back then.
brings back memories of being a young teen and watching soul train. I remember running to the T V to watch soul train to see how the singers dressed, and danced. we would learn a new dance and couldn;t wait to the next house party to practice it l.o.l
On this day in 1971 {October 2nd} Honey Cone performed "Stick-Up" on "Soul Train" One month earlier on September 7th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #11 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... And on September 18th it reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart... This show was Soul Train's national syndication premier... R.I.P. Mr. Cornelius...
I was watching Soul Train today and they popped up. Wow these ladies were amazing! Who is thee lea singer she is FILLED with soul. I just became a group of these girls. I wonder why they aren't talked about much. They look like thee supremes of the 70s.
C Truth yea they did a duet song back when Edna was only about 15 in California , look up wait till my Bobby gets home Edna’s singing the top part and Darlene’s singing the alto part
JUST MISSED!!! "Stick-It" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 12 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1971. This record followed Honey Cone's No. 1 hit {Want Ads}!!!
YEEEEEEEAAAAS!!!!!!!! Heard dis a few months ago on an old episode of #SOULTRAIN & fell n Looooove wit dis ladies voice!!!!!! My God my God! (; yu GO GIRL!!!!! Edna Wright
These girls from Honey Cone harmonize as well as any ladies I have ever heard - including the ladies from the group that sang "When Will I See You Again" (I forgot their group name).
Great production from HDH andco.lyrics from some of their songs were really funny and always brought a smile to my face.Never did well in UK. Such a shame as they probably were well ahead of their time.
This makes me so happy!! In 1st grade this I used to steal this album from my older sister. I would dance and aing. And pretend i was one of them. And I have NEVER forgotten that polka dotted dress from the album pictures.
The Chairmen had more than just one hit..."Everything's Tuesday","Pay To The Piper", "(You Got Me) Dangling On A String", "Finders Keepers", etc. Still making records today on the Carolina Beach scene.
They have a wonderful blending of voices. I love Edna Wright's voice and the way Carolyn and Shelly bring out the best quality of her vocals...That type of backup singing is a lost form in the 21st century.....Edna's sister Darlene Love is featured in the new movie 20 feet from stardom it is about background singers. Some make a good living doing it.. Lisa Fisher is also featured who sang with Luther...Yall know Luther anyway Dance With My Father....Have not seen it yet but I will
Carolyn Willis did a great job doing backup vocals with the group. But she also turns up doing backup for other artists after the group broke up in the mid-70s. She does really great work on a song by Stephen Bishop called "Save it For a Rainy Day." Listen to Carolyn Willis's vocal fills at the end of the song; I think her voice really takes the song to another level. I forget how I found out she was doing backup for Bishop, but once I knew, I never listened to the song (it was a top-40 hit in the mid-70s) the same way again.
If I'm not mistaken, this was from the very first episode of Soul Train in 1971. I recall that Gladys Night (ironically right after doing the very last Ed Sullivan Show) and a singer named Bobby Hutton (not to be confused with the Black Panther movement member of the same name) also appeared.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It took almost 40 years to capture this song and i'm glad I got to share with everyone.
Thank you so much for that
Thank you!
RIP EDNA WRIGHT
What a great song!!
When she hits that first note send shivers down my spine sounds so beautiful
black women back then was just so beautiful to me nothing fake about the 70s
+Lakeisha Lake Yes black women are naturally beautiful and they did mot use a lot of weave. make up etc
Ronnie jr....nothing fake about what you said
Ron, our sisters are beautiful, but most of them are so lost with self.
Love this era....
Ronnie Jr
I've always loved that Tarzan thing she does with her voice...🔥💯💕
I'm so glad that I grew up in the real music era 60,70 music is on point! Thanks
Kenneth Collins so am I, I enjoyed all of it the good times out weigh the bad. Rest in peace to Edna Wright lead songstress of the beautiful Honeycombs. I remember us dancing to this like yesterday.
Me too..what happened to music HONEYCONE WERE GREAT
I grew up listening to any music in the 1960s and 70s myself
Loved it
Soul Train...man what great memories. Back when we heard a tune like this and just had to go buy it. That was a world now that longer exists. People were so polite and knew what REAL fun was.

Delvin's of Hollywood was on Broadway and Manchester! We use buy Posters and LPs and 45s! And Don't forget about the Srawberry incenses!
I grew up watching soul train. Use to get up every Saturday to watch my cartoons and my soul train. I use to love the way everyone danced . i watched soul train until the early 90s.
You are so right. There will never be an era as great.
Childhood memories from the 70s
When I was a kid I'd rush out to buy 45's , I had all three Honey Cone hits. Never missed soul train or American Bandstand.
Number one hit I'm my book. Great job ladies😃
At the peak of HoneyCone's popularity I was a fifth grader in a small town elementary school in Georgia. It was a crazy time. Hey, fellow Georgian from the same era!
Your right. It was a glorious time in music and especially by black artists.
Bro, don't forget the Ricans! We bought more soul records than anything. Boricua Chic
Right. All races liked Motown. I think kids (and adults) of all races could relate to their music.
@@57highland My favorite song back then was "Band of Gold." I traded "Joy to the World" (Three Dog Night?) to another kid for it. It drove my sister crazy because I set the record player to play it over and over and over, lol.
IT WOULD BE A FELONY...NOT TO LOVE THESE LADIES OR THIS SONG!!!!
RIP Ms. Edna. So much grace and class in these women. Very rare.
OMG!!! Another forgotten blast from the past!!
Three beautiful ladies with no tattoos or piercings singing so pretty. Gotta love it!
As you can see women use to cover themselves And let their talent speak for itself
+coptafiel their talent was still bigger than their boobs and butts though.
Grown Folks music ! ~
This sounds sooooooo damn good in 2016 .
Even in 2018 it still sounds good
I get it!
My Heart is trembling with happiness!! The 70s! THE BEST DECADE EVER for Black Music and Music PERIOD!!!!!!!
Just a kid growing up in sharpstown, lived across the street from Sharpstown mall. Went there every day I could always get the clerk at the record shop to play this. Good 👍 memories from childhood.
Rest in Peace Ms. Edna. Beautiful voice!
They truly know how to sell the story in a song...dang.All three of them just seem like fun people to be around.
The women of Honey Cone all got strong voices with a variety of sounds in the songs and they had more than 3 hits.
One of my favorite groups of the 70’s 😍🎶♥️💯

This is some classic J-5. From the music to the lead vocals to the boom boom shacka locka. Siggggghhhhhhh - I miss '70s music.
Shelly is WORKIN that black dress!!!!
The Honey Cone should rank among the all time greatest girl groups. Paging the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Fantastic !! Don't see any singer or group that can match the vocal skills of groups of yesteryear. Fantastic. !!

Peace to you as well.
Now people want to hear that whiner like sound. Plus you have to dance like a stripper .
james Hall that's because they used their natural voices and bands were live none of computer crap
So nice to see the group and hear this song again after so many years. Thank you for posting!
These ladies are truly "extraordinary canaries" ... Highway Robbery is a work of art! The moves, the groove ... I'm guilty!!!

Honey Cone was formed by lead singer Edna Wright (sister of Darlene Love) with Carolyn Willis and Shelly Clark in 1969 according to Wikipedia
She does look like Darlene!
Thanks. I thought the lead singer resembled Darlene Love. This explains the strong voice and the distinctive sound.
C Truth yea they did a duet song back when Edna was only about 15 in California , look up wait till my Bobby gets home Edna’s singing the top part and Darlene’s singing the alto part
Shelly Clark White on the end. Verdine White bass player for Earth Wind and Fire. They just celebrated their 40th wedding celebration.
