In the 60s, 70s and 80s, we really had an embarrassment of riches when it came to music. Those of us who lived through it are lucky, as are the people just discovering it. 🙂

You are right. I went to Liberia 1989 to live there. I was Peace Corps Volunteer there in the 70s. I got there just in time for their first ever civil war and stayed as long as I could. When I return home in the 1990s I couldn't wait to check out the music. The music had die. There were some good songs but things had really change musically

    Next recommended Supertramp song:
    “Bloody Well Right” (studio/audio version)
The piano intro is so sick that you’ll be replaying it in your head the rest of the day. And the saxophone outro will make you want to add this to your playlist.

Supertramp is one of those hidden gem bands that people know a few songs, but don't know the group. I feel like most of the younger generation only knows them if their parents were fans growing up. They didn't quite hit that iconic status that their contemporaries did and faded from the public consciousness more than others. They are one of the most unique sounds of that era IMO and deserve more love than they get today.

My favourite group of all time. They have a unique sound. The music is often upbeat although the lyrics are often sad or dark. Any song from any of their five consecutive albums beginning with the all-time classic Crime of the Century followed by Crisis? What Crisis? (so underrated), Even In the Quietest Moments (sublime), Breakfast In America (most successful commercial LP), and Famous Last Words (underrated). These guys wrote about loneliness, social commentary, love, love lost, spirituality and more. Superb lyricists and musicians with great production. Very few pop/rock groups can meld organ and electric piano with regular doses of Harmonica (School is the classic example), saxophone and clarinet and make it sound great.

Supertramp is in my top 5, perhaps top 3, favourite bands of all time. Truly one of the greatest, and most under appreciated bands. Their music ranges from pop rock to progressive rock. Occasionally superficial and silly, just for fun, but usually deep and meaningful. The songs are always impeccably structured, infectiously catchy and memorable, the musicianship is always sublime. Amazing songwriters and musicians. I recommend the following songs: The Logical Song, Hide in Your Shell, Rudy. They have so many amazing songs worth your time though.

An update to my previous podt a over a year ago... This song has such significance for me. In 1979, I was in my early 20s and worked as a USG contractor in Saudi Arabia... it was a long way home. I'd sit up on a rise overlooking a military city on the Saudi/Iraq/Kuwait border (KKMC, for those in the know)... and gaze out at the city lights. There, late at night, as the desert heat dissipated, the Arabian night darkened, and the stars became incredibly bright, I'd come into the full realization and presence of my then world. I'd sit, listen, and contemplate where I was and what my future might hold. Lonely days, lonely nights! Now, at nearly 67, when I hear this song, I find myself going back to a place where, no matter the direction I went, I took the long way home! 😊

Incidentally if you go back to Knebworth 1979, the first of two gigs by Led Zeppelin, myself and thousands of others had camped on the Friday night and had got up very early Saturday morning to be some of the first in the queue to get in. When inside most of us got inside our sleeping bags because there was quite a chill on this early August morning. I fell asleep,,, I was woken by a very loud click of the PA being turned on and immediately this haunting song started to play decibels loud in the cool English morning countryside. The morning got warmer, the bands turned up and played, Zeppelin came on and smashed it. Was it so long ago,,, it feels like yesterday.

Supertramp has some of the best 'layering' in music, the great way they add layer after layer at the beginning and throughout the whole song. This album, though, I was just a wee lad when it came out and my parents played the heck out of it on their HiFI turntable in the 'music room'. They were so into music that they dedicated a room primarily for listening and reading, with the speakers built into the walls (this was the 70s, mind you) and perfectly positioned to create a stereo 'sweet spot' in the middle of the room. One of the greatest blessings they gave me was a love and appeciation for all kinds of great music.
Now that you've heard this one (and The Logical Song, I saw that one first), maybe give a listen to 'Give a Little Bit'?

My fondest memory of my dad growing up is we were taking a drive on the first warm spring day and on the radio the harmonica opening came on. My dad being a harmonica player, turned it up. He was in bliss listening while driving with the windows down. It was a beautiful moment I'll never forget.

Driven the country in my custom van with my buds 1974 & 75. And yes camping and lots of beer among other things. SuperTramp was one of our main go to's. As mentioned below "Crime of the Century" was their best released in 74. It still brings back great memories!! Check out "Bloody Well Right"

I have a totally different take on this song. I first heard it while working in Saudi Arabia as a 20 something year old young man. I was a looooong way from home. Prior to working overseas I'd always considered myself just a part of the scenery, but now I was playing a part in a movie show. As another lonely day became another lonely night, I'd sit on a rise looking across the empty blackness at the city lights in the far, far distance. Later in life I'd relate to "when you look through your life and you see what you could have been", not that I hadn't experienced some incredible years. But there were many years abroad. I wasn't around. Looking back, I think I might have done a few things differently. Great song, gave solace to me as young man alone in a far away land, as well as later in life. To this day, when I'm fortunate to hear it again, it brings back very introspective memories of the empty vastness of those Arabian nights! For reference, I'm now 65.

The idea I have always had from the lyrics of this song is sort of like 'stop and smell the roses,' or slow down, enjoy the ride. Assess the world around you, notice the trees and the scenery, count your blessings and 'take the long way home.' IMHO. Great group and song, and as always love your reactions.

Oh yes Supertramp, the good old times. I would like to know what you think about Loïc Nottet, a singer and dancer from Belgium. His most popular song is "Million Eyes": ua-cam.com/video/68EnJITH-5Q/v-deo.html and another recommendation is "Mr/Mme" (his only song in his mother tongue French, but the video has English subtitles): ua-cam.com/video/DS8Hkf_aOr4/v-deo.html

DEFINITELY play THE LOGICAL SONG from Supertramp next - as Tina Gilbert recommended here. So beautiful, so deep, so relatable. That whole album, BREAKFAST IN AMERICA, is just great - full of real keepers - totally brings me back to my teenage years in the late 70’s. These songs were ubiquitous in, I think it was 1979 actually. Great band, great album, great song. Love you guys!! When is Amber expecting? It’s gotta be really soon now!! Congratulations!!

For me, this song has always been about stopping to smell the roses. Life is short and we have responsibilities we must tend to. But at the end of the day, take the long way home.
At 56 years of age, I can be fairly certain I have less of my life ahead of me than I have already lived. One of my goals is to always "take the long way home."

Roger Hodgson is the singer on this piece. Rick Davies is the other singer. Roger wrote songs about his life mostly and had deep emotions, and how he viewed life, and things. Rick was more the rebellious singer. A lot of his songs had a little more force. But both artist while they wrote separate pieces, were able to put it together quite nicely. Rick is on the harmonica on this one. And there are some songs they both sing. Supertramp was not a hard rock band. Although some of their pieces had some elements of rock...they also used a lot of jazz influences. Especially Rick's songs. They also used a lot of sax, piano, soft electric guitar..keyboard....etc. This was the Breakfast America album...one of their most popular. Another song you might know at this point is
Give a Little Bit. Roger wrote that one on the 'Even In the Quietest Moment' album. Out of all their 70's albums, 'Breakfast In America', and 'Crisis What Crisis' are my top two.
    Good video! : D

The band originally had another name but changed it bc another band had a similar or same name. The name Supertramp came from a book about a tramp called The Autobiography of a Supertramp( or something similar). I’m not a Supertramp expert, but I heard about this at some point.
