Flexibility Over Focal Length for Wildlife Photography

  • In today's video I'm exploring the possibility that prioritising flexibility over focal length for wildlife photography can actually make for better images.
A trip to a local nature reserve provides plenty of subjects to work with so we'll see what we can get and I'll explain my thinking
    I hope you enjoy it

You have made some very good points Ralph. Big heavy equipment can actually hinder rather than help us getting photos. For wildlife photography this is true. I remember the good old days when I was shooting wildlife with a D500 and the Sigma 150-600 sport edition and that was nearly 4kg on its own. I started feeling the pain on my back and arms after only a couple of hours and that discouraged me a lot. With mirrorless though this has drastically changed. Great captures too, especially given the harsh light!!!

Glad you liked the video Thanos, If I was more dedicated on wildlife I would have to consider some other options perhaps but i enjoyed this shoot. Thank you for watching and commenting

Good video Ralph, you got some excellent images but I did like the wide angle captures. Keep up the good work. 👍👌👏

I paid a visit to Martin Mere wildlife sanctuary in Lancashire, last December. I use the M43 format and have a Leica DG 100-400mm f4-6.3. It's a very portable configuration, has fantastic image stabilisation, and an effective FF maximum focal length of 800 mm. I can use it without a tripod. I got some super images of flamingos and other wading birds in some wonderful low winter sun. So your video struck a chord with me. Use the best tool for the job not the best (ultimate) technology. Sure, had I been shooting pre-dawn in low light perhaps I would have needed an ultra expensive fast prime. Even then, my M43 system performs brilliantly at high ISO.
I like to go fell walking and the M43 system means I can get images that would be impractical with a larger full frame format.
I liked how you used the shorter lens to include the surrounding environment which means a more interesting composition rather than a 'record' type close cropped species orientated image.
    Another interesting video. Thanks pal.

That sounds like a great setup for wildlife. I think there is a temptation, especially when you have a longer focal length, to always try to fill the frame and that's not always the best option. When (at some point in the future) i decide to change cameras I will definitely consider M43. Thank you for watching and commenting

Lovely video Ralph, your decision to plump for the lighter gear was a good one I think, especially as it seemed as if it was a warm day. Definitely helps with getting the right angles hand held too. Loved the landscape shot at 10.50, perfect example of a leading line. Have a great weekend buddy 🙏🙏🙏

Aside from weight it's a compelling argument for upgrading to a newer Z8 or similar😊 Fun video. Great job Ralph.

Not compelling enough for me to drop that kind of money right now 🤣. In all seriousness, If I was serious about wildlife I would consider either a Z8 or, the other extreme, an M43 solution. Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching and commenting

That was brilliant Ralph, great camera choice for what you had to do, loved the images they were FAB. Few questions Ralph, was your ISO set to automatic? and if you use it what do you think of lightroom's new denoise tool. Have a great week and see you next week

Glad you enjoyed it Jim. I didn't have auto ISO set as, for some reason, the M50 doesn't seem to like auto ISO with manual exposure (I've never figured out why). However, I have tried to LR denoise tool and it's pretty good. I also have Topaz denoise AI and I don't think there's much to choose between them although some images work better with one tool and some with the other. Thank you for watching and commenting and have a great week
