  • Teardown of a hot melt glue gun that exploded when I was using it. I tried to plug it in once more and it exploded again, this time on camera :).
    By the way, what do you think about glue guns? Are they clever universal tools, or just overused tools for lazy people to botch up everything that could be mounted properly using a different method?

    That's a PTC heating element. Resistance increases (current decreases) as it grows warmer making it self-limiting. I've not heard of them failing short circuit. It was probably the wires that shorted.

      The insulation on the wire melted and the mains voltage arced over. The voltage of the ohmmeter isn't enough to reveal such a fault.

      @@user-kq1qd8fi1n Many cheap Chinese devices have terrible wires. Some are copper coated (or copper "colored") aluminum conductors that get hot. many have insulation that does not meet standards, even if they are stamped with the right rating.
      There are also many cheap Chinese USB plugs that are unsafe and can leak line voltage through the USB port.

    That metal is 24 Carat Chinesium™! Found your channel from a comment below a 2019 bigclivedotcom video about heat guns. He dismantled one which works, but noted that the two metal plates with crimped wires being insulated by a few turns of Kapton tape is unsafe at 240 V AC. That peak voltage of about 350 V, between electrodes which are only a couple of millimetres apart, is unsafe if condensation enters the gun. The PTC thermistor also tends to fail by short-circuiting. You really need to use plugs which contain fuses, too! That way, the plug fuse will fail, but will usually leave your household electricity supply still working. You'll still have lights. Thanks for the video.

    I usually use hot-glue to glue things I may want to remove in the future since it usually snaps off the surface you want to glue without residue or damage. I also don't always know what glue to use for specific applications.

  • @brothyr
    @brothyr 7 років тому +18

    Hot snot has a limitation but I use it anyway. For wood to wood, it works well when it can get extra hot. It just doesn't work well on metal/glass surfaces since there's nothing for the 'glue' to adhere to. It's a nice adhesive because it can be removed from most surfaces with isopropyl alcohol. I won't use it on more than 24V since there isn't any electrical resistance noted on any glue stick.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  7 років тому +15

      Not good for metal, glass or 230V. But still good to wood to wood. Or for Arduino to wood :D. I'm not sure what is worse: Using arduino instead of your circuit board, or using hot glue instead of a screw? :D. A machine with an arduino on a blob of hot glue in it is a symbol of hobby decadence. I would never use either of this.

    • @brothyr
      @brothyr 7 років тому +2

      To be fair, a plastic project box usually isn't thick enough for a screw. It would need a bolt fastened to the box then the board and it might not be ideal to use metal bolts. Could tap the box to avoid one nut but then the tap costs money. Some times the setup requires a nylon bolt and possibly nylon nuts which drives cost way up since nylon isn't cheap. It's very much initial cost and work input versus a low-cost "multi-tool" (glue gun) which just looks ugly when used but is reasonably functional.

    • @therealjammit
      @therealjammit 6 років тому +3

      I either use it to temporarily hold something together (like two blocks of wood, cut them both at the same time, tear apart and have two identical pieces) or as a potting compound for low voltage repair (VGA cable broke, pried apart the injection molded connector, soldered wires, replace injected molded plastic with gobs of hot melt). I never use it for anything "real". I have used little pieces of glue sticks inside heat shrink tubing to help waterproof connections (spliced wire under hood of car. When the tubing shrinks the glue goes gooey and seals up the tubing).

    It shouldn't arc over, but by that token, the glue gun isn't supposed to be full of hot glue, and yours was! It has leaked, perhaps they mixed up the metal wrong and it fractured, it isn't supposed to be this brittle, or there was a casting error in the rubber seals. Thing is, hot melt glue is a vaguely reasonable insulator at room temperature, but above 40-60°C, it can start to become electrically conductive, and if you get it hot and liquid enough, it eventually inevitably will.

    • @simontay4851

      Glue sticks are made of plastic. I think polypropylene or something similar. How can they be conductive.

    • @simontay4851
      @simontay4851 6 років тому

      I will have to test this with my hot glue.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 років тому +5

      First it's not polypropylene, which is a good dielectric... when cold, i don't know whether it still is in melted state. It's a blend of numerous polymers, and you can expect it to be around 50% or more EVA for that rubbery flexible property, but beyond that... well, mystery, and every manufacturer will have their own composition, and often recycled leftovers of whatever will find their way into low-cost ones. The way it becomes conductive is by motility of ions, akin to most liquids. There are non-polar liquids are non-conductive, but that requires high purity, because breakup products are usually going to be polar.
      Crucially, while you may still measure a reasonable resistance when you measure it with your low-voltage multimeter, but it will no longer provide isolation, allowing it to arc over when higher voltage is applied.

    • @Komiyan.
      @Komiyan. 5 років тому +1

      @@SianaGearz I agree, also i have accidentally left glues gun on before, and the glue that comes out looks "burnt", it's a deep amber in colour rather than clear/yellow...
      Very possible that it's conductive. Especially if it leaks into that heater element, which is only marginally thermally connected to that metal tube... The PTC itself may be far hotter than the melting tube, and when the glue hits that element, it will inevitably be overheated, and then become conductive / carbonize and then explode.
      No fuse, so will trip your breakers instead, add a fuse and it will still go bang, unless you use a HRC fuse...
      But $2 for a HRC for a $2 glue gun is a bit silly in the end...
      Another solution could be a capacitor in series to act as a dropper, but again would likely outcost the glue-gun itself, especially since the capacitor would need to be fairly large...

    By reading the comments, I've noticed that many of you had the same experience about your exploding glue gun. At that point, I want to mention that I also had one small pattex for about 15€. One day, I (luckily) decided to switch the powerstrip and not to plug the gun. Of course, it exploded! Being a diy lover since 4 years (if you love electronics and some vlogs, check out my channel), I went to the store and picked up a Bosch PKP18E with 40€, but this time with an electronic temperature adjuster. The reason I mentioned about the adjuster, is that this problem is mainly caused by overheating, which actually leads the cables to melt and finally contact themselvers.

    Hot glue is one of those things that can either be a blessing or a curse. Sometimes it work out like you want. But in some cases, there's no quicker fix that can do the job as well. And other times, the bonding power and durability of the stuff can really surprise you, in a GOOD way. For example, I have a pickup truck. The headlight assemblies have a particularly badly designed plastic part involved in the aiming mechanism. It's the part of the housing that has a captive adjustment screw for vertical aim adjustment.
    Well, that plastic cracked up and crumbled on BOTH the left and right headlight assemblies when the truck was only 2 or 3 years old... just from normal vibration. To repair it easily, I re-aimed the lights, then froze the screws in place with a modest gob of EVA-based (ethylene-vinyl acetate, the most common type of glue stick). Much to my pleasant surprise, that repair has survived for at least 12 years. I didn't think it'd survive (especially our VERY cold upper midwest winters)... but it's still intact to this day. It was stronger and more durable than the original parts!!
    Of course, an epoxy fix might have been superior in some ways (though that doesn't seem to have been necessary). But the position of the broken parts and the confined space of the repair made the hot glue worth a shot. I basically shot it into the right place, through a small gap between frame parts. I'm certainly glad I didn't take everything apart just to use epoxy; the hot-glue has worked wonderfully, and I don't see it failing any time soon. Also, a little bit of hot-snot is vastly cheaper than buying some good epoxy like JB Weld.
    I've also done some fabric-to-sew-on-velcro applications that have exceeded expectations, using the same kind of EVA hot glue. Nothing wrong with a quick, cheap, convenient fix... IF it does the job and it holds up for a long time!
    By the way, Diode, I'm glad you didn't get a nasty shock from that thing! Best to stick to a good name brand gun, I guess.

    I think the heating element is some kind of PTC device like in some electric space heaters. When it heats up the resistance increases, and eventually it reaches a temperature equilibrium. This prevents it from overheating, and eliminates a thermostat (though this means the temperature is not adjustable, which is probably fine for this application.)

There was a flash coming from the glue gun (like in the video but the glue gun wasn't opened up) and the lights on the ceiling in my room turned off because the breaker was tripped.

    strange all lights in your house go out when a short is induced, here in the states if something fails and goes to ground or shorts outright, only that circuit will trip, not the main breaker.

      It's better English than what most Americans speak today especially if you watch any of today's tv shows. One school I went to the students learned English by watching old re-runs of the 1950's show "I Love Lucy".

    It’s not 220V, it’s necessary to supply 12 V; It’s not possible to supply 220v. It can shoot. Cut the plug. Connect the power supply. 12v. Then the plug will work well.

    I have to tell this hot-glue story (please know that I don't like using hot glue this way): Long ago I needed a super 8 film projector of decent specification for shows at a bar/pub but I couldn't afford one. But I had lots interesting odds and ends in my parts stash, a dremel a hot glue gun.
    So there was a crappy super 8 projector, a very broken hi-8 camera with a good lens, halogen lamps that were far too powerfull, a light bulb dimmer... and a large powerful blower wheel-type fan and some flexible ducting. I'll bet you know where this is going!! I kept hacking bits of camera off of it's lens (also projector parts that were in the way); then did the light bulb (which partially fit and eneded up actually secure with heat insulation); attached the fan ducting and cut some holes so it had airflow. The Frankenstein's monster lived! I did 10 shows with it, never let me down unless I didn't have the fan going fast enough for the bulb LOL!! When I ran it too hot, hot glue strands would actually come streaming out of the top of the air exhaust and usually the lamp would blow.😂😂😂 I really miss those days.😔

    As much as I enjoy your content I tend to disagree with you regarding this tool. If you need to botch something, just use super-glue. That stuff is nasty and tends to bloom out and leave some white residue. Never happens with hot glue. Of course you shouldn't rely on it as much as some people do who can't be bothered to do stuff properly.

  • @deepfriedcircuit
    @deepfriedcircuit Рік тому

    True, there are many better ways to stick stuff together, though they take longer. So far all the types of hot glue I have tried failed to hold things together under reasonable load.
    While hot glue could be used for makeshift circuit insulation, any thick rubbery adhesive works fine for me.

    They use ptc thermistors for heating in hot glue guns. The ptc must be clamped down rigid or the ptc flexes and causes failure.

    "Too lazy" you know its actually kind of expensive to mount something properly, especially in norway wherw you order something and get something else for a high price because there are nowhere to find parts. And hot glue actually holds really well...
