  • After Newegg's recent eBay auction offering the Samsung D3 Station 4TB for $100, I wanted to share how to open it up for others that are wanting to use it as an internal drive, like myself.
Tools: 2 Philips Screwdrivers (one small, one large), 1 Torx Screwdriver (T8?), 1 X-Acto Knife, 1 Letter Opener
Hope you find this tutorial helpful!

I've been using a 1TB drive in this casing for over six years and about two weeks ago the USB port snapped off in the case. It's like a Chinese puzzle box! This is a most useful video and I thank you in 2018 for your efforts in 2014.

These cases are now being dumped cheaply without the drives and it provides a great option for that spare drive you keep putting in a dock slot. I am seeing these for under $15 and received two today. This video helps me know the easiest way to assemble them. Thank you.

What an excellent video. Useful even now, six years after you made it. Thanks!

you do not need to remove the torque screws they are nothing to do with removing the hdd it just drops out as the 4 rubber bungs hold it in the enclosure. just be careful of the wire for the led light on the front of the unit which is located under the HDD

So, you definitely don't need to remove the torx screws to remove the hard drive. Those screws are part of the hard drive. Other than that, good video.

Perfect! I have the 1.5TB model and want to get the HD out (it contains an old Time Machine backup) and couldn't figure out how to get into the darned thing! Will give it a go tomorrow, but you made it look straightforward and easy - many thanks!

Excellent video - thanks for this. I followed your guide with a 2tb D3 which had a Seagate Barracuda drive in it.

I just opened the 6TB version of this case and used a debit card/store card to release the casing. No scratches or need for any sharp knives. On the 6TB version there were also no screws to be removed from the HDD as there were four rubber clips to take off. Easy disassembly !

Many thanks for this video - without it I'm sure I would have broken the case when trying to open it - great job!

Thanks, purchased this in Nov 2015 in the 5 TB flavor and it died July 2016; looks like it's a power issue, no lights, no spinning. Extracting the hard drive and will be using it in an enclosure. :)

Thank you. My D3 has just stopped working so at least now I can take the drive out and see if it works in an ICYBOX.

Smart for knowing how to open the case, but not knowing that torx screws on drive lid can ruin the drive - you've been lucky, that seal on the lid was glued well.
