    Excellent! I've been running an old Western digital 3TB ... I make iso files of all my dvds but I don't have any space left... So this looks like I'll have to save up and do a similar QNAP system. Being retired... I'll have to save my "nickels".

    Over 2 grand! That’s a chunk of change! 😮

      The 4 hard drives and 2 ssd drives are the biggest cost and those can be downgraded to save money.

    I can tell you for certain, it does USE the memory you throw at it. I am currently at 32gb and have seen it fully utilized and I'm getting ready to bump it to 64 to see if it can fully utilize that and if I can see/tell that its being leveraged.
    Great unit, had mine for about 8 months. Just bumped my drives from 12TB to 18TB, and put the 12TBs into a QNAP expansion bay attached to the TS-464. I'm using 2 WD_Black SN7701TBs for my cache disks.

    How much did all that set you back? Very informative! What is this application, or could it be for?

      There are all kinds of things you can do with a NAS. I use it as a file server for many files, I used to host a website from it, and I use it as a plex media server so my son in college can still access all the movies we have, I also use it to back up photos and videos we take of our kids and family. The nice thing about it is I can access it from anywhere. It could also be used to run a game server.

      @737mechanic that's really cool. Are you also prepping for when the grid goes down or the grocery stores aren't getting restocked. Hopefully none of that happens but...

      @@imaphxaznative I have a few months of food and water at all times and I have 2 generators and always have 30 gallons of gas in the garage I keep rotated out just in case. Not to mention things that go bang.

      @737mechanic nice job. You Might want to install layered barriers to your front door 🚪 if you haven't already to make it harder to kick in

    Great video what do you think of this Nas?

      So far it has been rock solid. It is way faster and much more enjoyable to deal with than my 10-year-old DS213.

      @@737mechanic thanks buddy all the best from Scotland… I was a bit nervous about the upgrade of memory and SSD but now confident after seeing your video … I’ve had a qnap for 8 years no issues at all just time for an upgrade plus need more drive space … thanks again

    Will this NAS support 4 x 22 TB drives?
    I want to buy 4x WD Ultrastar DC HC570 22TB.

    • @737mechanic
      @737mechanic  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes it will. I almost bought the 22TB drives but western digital had a sale in the 18TB so I couldn't pass it up.

      Can you advise me whether this drive is a good choice (WD Ultrastar DC HC570 22TB)?
      The Ultrastar series is much cheaper in larger capacities than the RED version. They are also supposedly faster. I just don't know whether these drives will be too loud for home use.

    • @737mechanic
      @737mechanic  3 місяці тому

      @@MrSsebaa I would go with whatever is cheaper. Both drives are good drives. I have the Red Pro and my NAS is about 3 feet from where I sit and I can hear the drives crunching away, the noise isn't so loud that it bothers me but I wouldn't want it any louder.
      The Synology I had for years had 2 WD Black drives that was as quite as a mouse and I do miss how quite that NAS was.

    Absolutely great config but this unit must be bigger. Why? Too hot components in really small place. Cpu, 2 Samsung m2 990 pro around the ram slots. And finally 4 HDDs, hot dissipated half way (sata connectors board) from the back by the big fan that cannot reduce the heat of the main conponents. This will die in a year, not 2. Great all the hardware in that shelf but all need more air to live for years, a mini cabinet with fans could be better with all that inside.

    • @737mechanic
      @737mechanic  2 місяці тому +2

      The airflow from the fan moves plenty of air to keep everything cool. Under full load when it is heavy transferring files the hottest the CPU gets is 138 degrees F, and the hottest hard drive is #4 and it runs at its hottest 114 degrees F. It's way below the danger zone.
      Normally the temps are much lower than that but those temps are when it is really working.
