What an extraordinarily liberating video - I've never seen such an extended, experimental, creative session with a gelli plate. It showed me I really need to loosen up and just play more. Thank you!
For the brayer: Just let the paint dry and, once dry, it peels off very easily right down to the clean black rubber. Plus, you can use the "peels" for collage.
Haha, I'm not sure how I manage to keep them white either! Thanks so much. A limited colour palette does make it so much easier to keep everything cohesive.
Always have a scrap piece of paper nearby and work all the excess off after each use (these can become collage papers!). At the end of your session, wash well in warm water with a little hand soap. Since hand soap moisturizes, it will help condition your brayer. Can also keep moist paper towel beside your work to rub excess paint onto.
Great tips, thank you so much! I do something similar with my brushes actually. I have a small board that I wipe them on to get rid of excess paint. Will definitely try the papers.
Love your colors. Gel prints are so addictive. Thanks for the reminder to use simple tools. I seem to have gotten into a habit of using brayers and stencils, and your loose organic texture is far more interesting.
For about 3 years I have been using gel prints to create greeting cards and collage paper. Loved watching your experiment with the journal book pages!💙 You can also use stencils, masks, rubber stamps etc for mark making on the plate. Then let layers dry and add more layers and pull the whole print at once with a single thin layer of white, titan buff, or even gray or black! 😃
Love this! I have been using the gel plate for a while but you have a very unique and inspiring way to apply the paint on it! I also use it in my sketchbooks to create backgrounds!
Immediate roll off the brayer to prevent build up. Brayer off papers can be quite lovely too. I use gel hand sanitizer to clean mine. And May need to soak but the immediate roll of is key. Gorgeous prints! New subbie
If I can't get off the paint on a prayer I soak it for a few days and hold it under hot water, and then you can peel all the paint off. Thanks for your lovely inspiration.
What a fantastic idea, never would have thought of that! Would you be willing to share which one you use? Just had a look and there are so many different materials for those mats out there.
Mine came from op.shop. Has no info or label. Made from durable clear plastic outer with green gel inner. Try office supplies. I stand on mine at the kitchen sink washing dishes!
Some amazing prints from that plate! I think I'm going to break down and buy one. I absolutely love your color palette! All the videos I watch of yours, I think that your color selections are just gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Ive found that Murphy's Oil Soap cleans acrylic paint off the brayer and is the best way to clean your Gelli plate, too! Beautiful prints, thank you for the video!
Lovely. Beautiful results. I loved watching your process and found myself ooing and ahhing witb each result. Thank you for sharing your creative process with us.
I love this video. You’ve created some stunning pieces of work and your use of color is so inspirational. I never clean my brayer. I’m three years into using it and I just roll the excess paint off on a piece of copy paper. Then I use the the roll off paper as a background and keep adding layers. I’m pleased to have found you.

Thank you for sharing your creative journey. Very inspiring and helpful.
What beautiful prints you made! So inspiring that I'm heading to the studio! But, before I go - to clean your brayer, just leave it to soak in some warm water with a little liquid dish soap. Whenever you get back to it, even if it's a couple of days later, the paint will wipe right off with a paint rag! I do try to not wash much paint down the drain as it can really muck up your plumbing! Thanks again for sharing your beautiful work!
Amazing, so happy it's inspired you! Great tip with the dish soap water. I also try to minimise paint down the drain and I found that cleaning the brayer under running water takes a long time.

To clean my brayer I use a little dish soap and a small brush that was originally intended for cleaning potatoes. Just scrub it clean after each printing session.
Thank you for sharing your video! I have found that hand sanitizer will work well on dried brayers - that's what I use in my classroom after several dozen students have used them through the day. Also, the dried paint around the edges will peel off - and as the kids say, it's quite satisfying!
I have heard Murphy's oil soap is a bit of a miracle cleaner when it comes to cleaning up paint. I don't think I can get it here in the UK, but will look for something similar. Thank you!

Jeannine try having a plastic dish of water to immediately soak your brayers in - it helps somewhat but remains - like all clearing-up - an unpleasurable chore. Like what you do and love the colours you choose.
Yes! Not environmentally friendly, but we get large wipes for cleaning the floor. I roll my brayer on it, then rub into the sides of the roller for the harder to get bits. You can make a cheaper environmental version, wet a piece of old towel and roll on that. It's also great for cleaning gel plate.
To try printing fill sealable bag with edible jelly, can thicken with gelatine. Using food can be culturally sensitive. Could try first aid pads ,the type you cool and wrap round sprains. Hot water bottle makes great ribbing marks or put a silicone baking sheet as top layer for smooth surface.
Great ideas for trying it out without committing to buying a plate! I've made my own gelli plate before, but it started smelling funny after a while, which is why I bought an off-the-shelf one.
I really enjoyed this and I’m feeling so inspired! I wouldn’t have thought to flip over the plate or print straight into sketchbooks….hoping for some time today to play! When cleaning off brayers I just have a sheet of paper at the side to roll the brayer on and that takes all the excess paint off in between prints then wash with water and soap right at the end :)
Hi Lisa! So glad it's inspired you. Rolling off the brayer seems like the way to go. I've seen a few comments mentioning that and you end up with lovely bonus papers!
So nice!! I've just bought a plate because of your video. // If your brayer is very dirty and dry and can't clean it easily, maybe you can try acetone.
Great work! Harmonious colors! Please tell me, do you use these works as the basis for large works? And if so, how then to transfer the same textures in large works?
Thanks so much! I don't use them as a basis for large works consciously, but I think all the marks and colours all influence my larger work subconsciously. I think it's more about finding out what kind of marks etc. I like and training my eye this way to recognise when it happens on larger work. That being said, I would also love to try using a gelli plate directly on larger work and seeing what happens.
As the previous commenter said, Murphy’s oil soap is the best cleaner for nearly all art equipment - brayers, brushes, palette knives, stencils, etc. In addition it is inexpensive. Add it to a container of water and soak equipment.
You could also start with a layer of bright colour, then go over it with more muted shades. That way the bright colour will still shine through as little accents.
Hi Jeannine! When you are done printing, put you brayer in the water and leave it there for 15-30 minutes. You should be able to lift the paint skins easily. Also soap, warm water and the scrubby side of a sponge can help.
@@francavan1295 Oh wow - I didn’t realize the whole skin could spontaneously come off. I watch a lot of Robyn McClendon’s gelli printing videos and I have never seen that happen. Hi, I’m a subscriber so I know that u use quite a lot of premixed colours. How long can u keep them, do they go off ever, do u keep them in a fridge.? I sketchbook abstractly while my meals are in the microwave. Doing this with premixed colours could be an essential part of my practice. Especially when I only get 2 minutes! Thanks so much Robert! It would definitely speed up your process if you only have two minutes at a time. The containers I keep them in are pretty airtight, the paint should stay fresh in there at least a couple of months. If they are starting to thicken and looking like they might dry out soon spray them with a bit of water.
This is such a great idea and technique. I have a few art journals with a few pages left to complete from many years ago. It would be fun to use this technique to complete them. Thanks so much. What is the name of the green gray color you used?
That's a great idea! The green grey colour I mixed myself. Unfortunately I don't remember what's in it. You could probably create a similar colour mixing a cool green (more blue than yellow) and brown.
So beautiful and enjoyable to watch. Thanks for letting us see the final images! I was so curious to see them. Gorgeous! This is my first time watching you. How do you use your sketchbooks in your art?
Thank you! I haven't been using my sketchbook as much as I'd like. I seem to get frustrated with the results in my sketchbook too often. But I've come up with a few ideas recently to be more playful in my sketchbook and take the pressure off, like using it more as a scrapbook. I've actually made a video on that (linked in the description box) , if you are interested.
just discovered you and have watched for hours! i have a question about the sketchbook that you use.... is it talons or tarrance by any chance art creations? thank you so much for all these wonderful inspiring videos.......
Hello, thank you for your video. You have inspired me to get back into the studio and create again! I have a question and a tip. Are the paints in the jars colors that you mixed up yourself? If so what colors did you use to get the colors you used to print? To clean your brayer always have a sheet of paper to roll off excess paint every time you use it. You can also use baby wipes (pretty sure you have those laying around!). If your brayer gets really layered up you can soak it in water and the actually peel the old paint off (very satisfying!)
How wonderful to hear that I have inspired you! The raw sienna is from the Sennelier Abstract range, the white is Daler Rowney System 3. The other ones are mixes. The beige is quite similar to a buff titanium. The reddish brown I think is cadmium red with hooker's green. It's quite similar to a burnt sienna. Unfortunately I don't remember what's in the other two. Thanks for the brayer tips! Will try them.
Just a small hint: copy paper is coated with a thin layer of plastic. My experience with it has been that acrylic paints crack and peel off of the surface in about a years time. This paper is fun for practice, but uncoated paper is best.
@moumoun7 Dollar Stores are a great source for things like that. And I also love keeping sauce containers, especially cause they come free and we give them a second life
Oh thanks, Carolyne! Nice to see you here too 😉.
Yes, it's the Royal Talens Art Creation tidd.ly/3XoRO02
Very interesting:)
Thanks, Shan!
I wait until enough paint builds up on Breyer. Then when dry I peel it off easily.
That’s what I do now too! So satisfying
Thanks! For my purposes copy paper is fine, but definitely worth mentioning for anyone who wants their prints last for longer
Love what you produce here. I just wish you would show the results a few seconds longer.
Thank you! That's why I added the flip through at the end, but good point. Will try to do that next time.
Just bought my first gelli plate so this video is perfectly timed for me ❤. Where did you get those cute little pots for the premixed paint?
Found some at the Dollar Store or Goodwill (USA) as well as saved from meal delivery services (sauce containers)
@annam.myburgh9515 What a coincidence! They are from Amazon: amzn.to/45LjMEH
@moumoun7 Dollar Stores are a great source for things like that. And I also love keeping sauce containers, especially cause they come free and we give them a second life
Thank you so much! The raw siena is from the Sennelier Abstract range, the white is Daler Rowney System 3. The other ones are mixes. Unfortunately I don't remember what's in them!
@@jclosestudio merci beaucoup et bonne création, Jeanine !
use a little less water and the crackling texture will stay. live the video i sometimes forget to use other tools like brush or squeegee to apply paint o gel plate ❤
I do have to remind myself to use different tools. Otherwise I also keep on using the same kind of tools. And using different tools makes the result so much more interesting.
I clean my brayers under running warm water
That's what I do usually, but found it a bit messy. But then again, all clean-up is a bit messy 😄
“These are now painting trousers” 😂😂😂
Every time 😂
Clean your brayer with Baby Wipes the kind you use to clean your baby's bottom.
I do have plenty of those 😄
I clean my bra yet very easily with washing up liquid and warm water. Let it sit for a few moments and wi-e all the paint off
Great tip, thank you!
