Bill Graham was managing them at the time and demanded that they get to play. The organizers leaned on him to help them put on big rock shows.
There are a thousand stories about this performance: some true, some not. They were not scheduled to go on and took a load of psychedelics. Then they were suddenly told that they had
to go on. The big story was the drummer, Michael Shreve. He had just turned 20 years old. He is a serious jazz-trained drummer and had a long career afterwards in the Bay Area. He said on a number of occasions that it's true that they were drugged up, but they had practiced very, very hard for a long time too.

Agreed. Here they were overdosed but at Tanglewood all were able to adjust their grams.

Yeah, it’s fair to say that Carlos has mellowed a bit in the 50 years since Woodstock. This is one of my favorites of all time. One thing I’d like to see, but haven’t, is an unedited version of the entire track as they played it. All the versions I’ve seen are incomplete. I also wonder if they had trouble meeting chicks after this performance. 😂

The "guy" on the organ was Gregg Rolle. Later one of the founders of Journey . I don't know you guys, but if you liked the purity of this performance and don't know others, then then you should also check out 10 Years After doing "Going Home" and Joe Cocker's version of "A Little Help From My Friends" at the same Woodstock. Half of Cocker's Band couldn't get there because of the traffic.

No one has given credit to the film crew using experimental techniques such as split screen viewing The editing was exceptional 7 editors including young Martin Scorsese Different perspective from being in the crowd modified sound to sitting back watching a closeup of individual band members filmed/integrated with the music

They got there because Bill Graham believed in them.
    Thankyou.

A little bit of trivia on Santana at Woodstock. Carlos Santana just an hour before they went on stage they they each had dropped LSD and were tripping that is one of the reasons why it ended up being epic. That day they had captured lightning in a bottle the rest is history.

100%!!! Problem for me was Chepito’s conga solo was missed on film as the camera was focused on Carabello’s steady rhythm. I consider this solo to be among the greatest stories ever told. Absolutely amazing tone, pace, syncopation, creativity.

They were paid $500 for the show, I heard Michael Strieve say. But after Woodstock everyone knew who they were.
