And then there's Aqua Marine from the Marathon album. David Margen on bass. If they want a break from instrumental only Santana, I'd suggest Taboo from Santana III. Lots of instrumental sections but also beautiful, soulful vocals.

The Abraxas album was released in 1970, after Woodstock. From beginning to end Abraxas is one of the very best albums of that time - Incident at Neshabur, Oye Como Va, Samba Pa Ti, Se A Cabo, Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, and more. The album art (the Annunciation) was by the German realist painter Abdul Mati Klarwein, who also did the cover art for Miles Davis iconic 'Bitches Brew' album, also in 1970.

Carlos Santana is the master of Melody, and slowly turns the volume up as he goes, he has proven that you don't have to have your volume set on 10, to get your point across. Or have to have an oversized effects board, just pure and simple. He always has master class musicians in his band... He truly is as good as it gets.

I can listen to Carlos Santana any time. He had a sound like no other. Santana's Abraxas album is one of the best albums to come out of the 1970s. Every song on it was killer. Saw Santana and Steve Miller inside Diamond Head Crater in Honolulu in 1971 maybe winter of 1972. Holy Smokes what a day that was. Both bands just blew the place up.

Hi guys, in Colombia, this was the tune in the parties when in order to flirt with a girl, invite her to dance and she accept , the situation was looking pretty good. What a good memories, no doubt about it. Samba patterns, some conga, maracas and brushes work on the drums, and you`re there. Cheers and thanks for the tune`s appreciation. Theres another terrific solo guitar Santana music performance and this is "Song of the Wind", featured in the 1972 album "Caravanserai". It will blow your minds and imagination.

Great instrumental by Santana. This Latin rock band was formed back in 1966. They had a lot of great songs & instrumental rock tracks over the years such as "Jingo", "Evil Ways", "Black Magic Woman", "Soul Sacrifice", "Oye Coma Va", "Everybody's Everything", "The Game Of Love", "Hope You're Feeling Better" etc. The song "Smooth" & "Maria Maria" were done later in 1999 & rejuvenated the career of Santana.

The woman on the album cover is an angel.
Samba Pa Ti is the first song Mr. Santana wrote.
Scrolling thru the comments I noticed many suggestions for Europa. Couldn't agree more. May I suggest the live cut off the Moonflower double album. Good example of the emotion he puts into every note. Pay attention to how quiet and respectful the Japanese crowd is till the very end. Mesmerizing! The title cut off this album is Flor D Luna. Another extremely beautiful instrumental! I also saw some suggestions for Transcendence. Great suggestion also. There is some vocals by Greg Walker on this song but it is amazing. Want this played at my funeral.
Have seen him live too many times to count. Never disappoints. Always an extremely diverse crowd with everyone dancing together with a wonderfully fine feeling of fellowship. He knows how precious our children are ( exemplified by his Milagro Foundation ) and often brings a young boy and girl from the crowd on stage to dance.
A good example of the magic of his concerts is " Smooth ", with Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20. Check out the many excellent musicians and numerous instruments on stage, the beautiful backdrops and of course, the fine fired up crowd!
Still tours some. Plays at House of Blues in Vegas pretty regular with his beautiful wife Cindy on the drums. Think about that, from the original Woodstock to today. Amazing! A living legend! So,so, much wonderful music from this man and the great musicians he has collaborated with for decades.
Strongly suggest you delve deep into the Universal Tone that is SANTANA!

When you mentioned about how you wondered how people could listen to music without words, it reminded me of my son. I told him about how lots of instrumentals back in the 60s and 70s climbed the charts just as easily as the other songs and he couldn't believe it. I gave him the example of Love Is Blue staying at number one in 1968 for about seven or eight weeks. It's interesting that there are people who think that.

"Samba Pa Ti" was one of the tunes used in my ballroom dance classes -- strangely enough, despite the title, it's actually more of a Rumba rhythm, not a samba, which would be quite a bit faster. 🙂 If memory serves, we used that song during our final tests. His newer stuff "Into The Night", "Maria Maria", "corazon Espinado", "Put Your Lights On", "Africa Bamba"...

If you react to "Soul Sacrifice" I highly recommend the film version of Woodstock (the one that is 9:38 long)..It is the best quality, and is edited to show just enough of the audience to make it real interesting!..After that an even better (imho) version of "SS" and of 'Black Magic Woman" from their show almost exactly a year later at "Tandlewood' exists. Obviously Woodstock had all the history, and the crazy stories surrounding it, to its advantage, but musically, Tanglewood is off the charts great!

The number 1 performance at Woodstock was Santana's soul sacrifice, you should do the live performance next.

Europa is the best Santana instrumental. Brightest Star from the Zebop album is the most unheralded great Santana song.

I agree with the Europa comment, especially the live version on the Moonflower double album. Also the only way to listen to Soul Sacrifice is the Woodstock version. They were supposed to be on later so had been smoking, when their session was brought forward, and it showed. Not in the music though, which was perfect.

Another band who can tell a story without words is Genesis. 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' album is filled with amazing musical 'pictures'.

You should check out Grand Funk Railroad singing I'm Your Captain at Shea Stadium.

Have seen Santana live in the UK many times, Caravanseria his best album in my opinion, try 'America' from one of his later albums.

Someone mentioned EUROPA, which I agree with. Also, OYE COME VA.
