I really really like The Smiths as well as their respective solo careers, particularly Morrissey's, but the adulation has gotten a bit out of hand lately. No, The Smiths are not even the greatest _English_ band of all-time much less worldwide. The Stones, Kinks, Who, and Zeppelin all top them. I was watching the Morrissey: The Solo Years doc here on UA-cam a few weeks past and some of the British critics were saying that Moz is "like Dylan". Whoa whoa whoa, let's dial it back a few hundred notches people. Moz is a *superb* lyricist, but not comparable to Dylan or the actual greatest lyricist of all-time, Morrissey's countryman, Ray Davies.

I love Morrissey like no other. Its funny because I used to think he was ok but coming back and listening as an older person his music just speaks to me. I used to prefer Depeche Mode and the Cure. Both are lightweight in comparison now.

Johnny was THE guy who was able to sound totally "pre-Hendrix" in a pop context, and he succeeded _prolifically._ Peter Buck and a few others made similar progress in the same era, but Marr (whether he knew entirely what he was doing or not) sounded supremely "in command" of the guitar+amp+song - as though everything was both _sorted AND sublimely spectacular all at once, all the time._ Dude just NAILED everything, exactly right.

A little bit of trivia on Santana at Woodstock. Carlos Santana just an hour before they went on stage they they each had dropped LSD and were tripping that is one of the reasons why it ended up being epic. That day they had captured lightning in a bottle the rest is history.

For me personally they were a big influence first hearing them on Australian radio JJJ in the 80s. They had little commercial success in Australia and most Australians still have no idea who they are. I think they never got any radio play except for stations like JJJ who played a lot of alternative stuff and I attribute to this to a show we had at the time Countdown which played music videos of all the popular hits at the time and the Smiths was too alternative to the pop music at the time and they had really bad music videos. I still think The Queen is Dead and Meat is Murder as two of the greatest albums in my record collection and their hits still are just as good and still just as out of time as they were when they came out in the 80s and I always felt their music felt like it was a blend of new wave and British 50s and 60s pop. They were original and their songs sang about teenage angst which was poignant for many in that era, their words were deep and it reflected loneliness, search for love. It was raw and real and I guess their songs are as relevant to the youths of the 90s, the 2000s, the tweens and today and most likely tomorrow. Morrissey went on to have a successful solo career but that lightening in a bottle between him and Johnny Marr was gone. I saw him a few years back at a concert at the Sydney Opera House. My expectations were high. Morrissey was late, very late and all I can remember was son getting freaked out at those crazy vegetarian meat is murder videos Morrissey would force his audience to watch. One should never meet their idols. For some us, they are the greatest and I think every greatest band has usually comprised of not one but two musical geniuses. But everyone knows it’s the Beatles but The Smiths, which no one has heard of downunder has always been a close second for me anyway

Definitely never in touch with them live and that whole scene. This whole podcast is cringy because you pretend you are something that you are not, a Dave Matthews Band fan. Sadly, U2 are creatively finished as a group and their best years are way behind them. Their best albums were their 1980s catalogue. The Joshua Tree is a good album but not great. In 1987 which was a very competitive year for music with better released albums then the Johsua Tree such as Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love, Def Leppard Hysteria, Michael Jackson's BAD, Prince Sign of The Times, John Mellencamp Lonesome Jubilee, INXS Kick, Midnight Oil Diesel & Dust, Fleetwood Mac Tango in the Night, George Michael's Faith, Guns & Roses Appetite for Destruction, Whitney Houston Whitney, Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Furthermore, U2 were not the biggest band or music act in the world in 1987. Pink Floyd and Michael Jackson world tours from 1987 to 1989 outgrossed U2's Joshua Tree tour. Also, the 3 biggest selling music album acts in the 1980s were Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins solo and together when he was singing with Genesis.
