One of my favorite books. If they made a movie about that expedition, people would think its fake. thats the level of epicness of these guys. Especially the sailing on the James Caird and crossing South Georgia on foot.
@@Expendable0Krone21 Great book. Also recommend Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Sides about a different Arctic expedition. The last 100 pages or so are absolutely harrowing!
This was an excellent video on Endurance and Shackleton. NatGeo used AI to extend the short audio and video clips that were saved from the voyage. Shackleton's adventure was truly amazing. 665 Days at sea and he was able to come back to save his men. He was truly an amazing person and such a great story. Explorers found Endurance almost 100 years after it sunk!
They used AI voices trained on the original voices of the crew, based on short recordings made a hundred years ago. Some of it sounds uncanny like a robotic-sounding human, some of it sounds like a radio broadcast from WW2.
Having visited County Kerry, Ireland and Tom Crean's South Pole Inn and reading about his expeditions with Shackleton and Scott, I am very excited to see this documentary, Can't wait!!
If you like Shackleton, you may also like The Franklin Expedition, The Dyatlov pass, anything Mt. Everest. The Denali's Howl, and number one everything about Shackleton.... Fortitudine Vicimus He is on my list of the top 3 people I would most like to have dinner with.
The contrast between the 2 separate expeditions,100 years apart is extraordinary. The difference between ships is “night & day” It’s like nothing could go wrong on the Endurance22
Thank you for making this shake my soul. It’s a beautiful story of camaraderie and survival. Thank you for putting this together 🙌 I’m sure there is much more to learn from this story. Inspired to use my instincts more and become survival of the fittest and clearest mind
To think I actually found about this WILD excursion because of the tale about how some individuals stumbled upon Shackleton’s whiskey in an abandoned arctic shack. Just an epic dude.
Luis Alberto Pardo Villalón (Santiago, September 20, 1882-ibid, February 21, 1935) was a Chilean sailor, who was in command of the Yelcho cutter ship of the Chilean Navy, which carried out the difficult rescue of the shipwrecked of Ernest Shackleton's famous British scientific expedition that spent eight months on Elephant Island (Pilot Pardo Islands, South Shetland), on August 30, 1916, in the middle of the Antarctic winter. I saw Natgeo and I consider it miserable that they do not mention the Chilean capital Luis Pardo Villalon was the one who found them.
Few stories of the Endurance fail to mention the Aurora, the ship that sailed to the other side of the continent to lay stores for Shakleton's men once they had passed the pole and come out the other side. After rescuing the crew of the Endurance, Shackleton obtained another ship and went to the other side of the continent and saved what remained of the Aurora crew.
@@sanfranciscobay The boat pulled off its moorings and drifted out to sea with some seamen on it. It did not return. The remaining party was ashore for about a year. A few men did lose their lives, but it was Shackleton that leased another boat and went to rescue them shortly after he returned from rescuing the men from the Endurance.
Why aren't there any searches for HMS Terror and HMS Erebus? They were in search of the Northwest Passage in 1845. That is such a mysterious expedition to me. It's part folklore due to the fact that everyone disappeared, but they were stranded for upwards of three years? And, supposedly had three years of food, assuming it didn't spoil or get contaminated....
It’s a bit disappointing to be honest. I love the Shackleton story and this documentary covers it. It also covers the expedition to find the wreck of the Endurance . By covering both stories it doesn’t do either expedition the justice they deserve. In my opinion you will only be interested in the expedition to find the wreck if you’re familiar with the original story, therefore the original story doesn’t need to be retold. Worth watching but be prepared to feel a little bit deflated. Apologies if you don’t agree.
To give a complete picture of both the 1914/1917 and 2022 expeditions, including Shackleton's mind-boggling 800 mile voyage with 5 crew in a glorified canoe through one of the world's most violent seas to get help on South Georgia, this would need to be a few hours long. It's likely a general overview instead and anyone looking for a deeper dive should read The Ship Beneath the Waves by Mensun Bound, the maritime archeologist that led the rediscovery team and the basis for this documentary or Endurance, written by Alfred Lansing in 1959, still considered the best book on 1914 expedition.
I'd like to see that to but it would likely break apart (10,000 feet below)... I think if they can get really good scans and dimensions, re-create a replica and recover a few actual important pieces from it and display them next to the walk through replica... I would visit.
Not allowed. Per the international Antarctic Treaty System, the Endurance is a protected historic site and monument so the discovery team wasn't permitted to salvage the ship or anything inside. The protection zone has also been increased by 500 meters to keep it as safe as possible.
Greatest tale of survival in history? It doesn't even come close to society of the snow. They were brat teenagers, with no food, no vehicle and had to literally eat eachother and walk on the snow for days lol
It is not a story about failure, but of leadership and overcoming adversity.
Absolutely in awe of this story of endurance and leadership and perseverance! Could not put the book down!

The ships have already been found
There has been some bodies of the crew members found. Due to the harsh environment, they became ice mummies and were preserved very well.
Bud, they were found ten years ago!

I was lucky enough to attend a talk by Mensun Bound at Derby Book Festival - when he talked about the moment Endurance was found gave me goosebumps .
Who doesn’t know the original story that would be interested in this in the first place? No, I don’t agree.
The Kenneth Brannagh version is pretty darn good at telling the Shackleton story.
What are you on about, you over thinking it.
can you share the source of that quote at the end of the video? is it a recording of shakleton's voice?
Where and when can you see this in the U.S.?
