The Wreck of Endurance - A Shipwreck Frozen in Time

- Cold water shipwrecks are, quite often, some of the best preserved out there. You see this in the Great Lakes, you see it in the Arctic, and you see it in the Antarctic. Although that last one hasn't been well documented, for understandable reasons.
However, we do have one notable wreck. Endurance, the mothership of the Shackleton Expedition. A wreck discovered only two years ago, as of this upload. And a wreck that is in amazing condition, after a century underwater.
...aside from the damage caused by the ice, that is.
Still, Endurance is a time capsule. Not as easy to dive as Erebus or Terror, so one that is less well documented. But certainly still worth looking at, even if we'll probably never see the interior.

Endurance's wreck somehow feels more peaceful, for lack of a better word, than Erebus or Terror. Possibly because her crew all survived despite the loss of the ship.
Yeah I think youre right, I agree that at least part of that peacefulness is knowing that the Endurance crew didn't slowly die off and have to resort to cannibalism.
The Franklin expedition has been a fascination of mine since I was a kid. I was super excited when they found Erebus and Terror.
Whats amazing is that ship will still be there in the same condition a thousand years from now
Legendary comment
Information likes this makes me hope designers look at the materials this ship used and take note. over 100 years in the ocean and still intact and even the nails have not rusted away.
It's the conditions the wreck is in, not the wreck itself.
Cold water.
@@JoshuaTootellIsn't the deep ocean cold too? Titanic is 2.4 miles and it is wasting away.
The Great Lakes have numerous well preserved wrecks
........ok
Ernest Shakleton was a true hero.
Near Sweden, there are many wooden shipwrecks that, like the VASA, are well preserved.
Glad to see youre covering some other famous shipwrecks!
Hurley's pics are breathtaking
Caulking still between the hull planks
Great video. Thanks I really enjoyed this one . Keep up the fantastic work.
Being kept in the freezer kept them well-preserved.
IMO, the story of the crew of Endurance was one of survival. The real heroes of the Shackleton expedition were the two men that took supplies from the other side of Antarctica to staging points so that Shackleton would survive the planned journey across the continent. With temperatures abnormally low, they knowingly risked - and lost - their lives after successfully delivering the supplies, not knowing that Shackleton never started the Trans-Antarctic journey.
5:26 "Not one man was lost during this expedition." The correct statement is, "Not one member of the crew of the Endurance was lost." There were two units in Shackleton's expedition, those on the Endurance and those who waited for Shackleton at McMurdo Sound, which was his destination. The McMurdo men suffered horribly and several died. Read "Shackleton's Forgotten Men".
We don't all talk the same, so why should we all write the same? Stop being that person and enjoy the journey.
@@haywoodjay385 Are you then indifferent to the deaths of Shackleton's men? My point is the fate of those men is well worth remembering.
@@haywoodjay385 It's a factual error rather than a way of talking. Men were lost during the expedition, just not from Endurance's crew.
The condition of the wrack is amazing.
Awesome!!!
A video of the WW1 monitor that sank , maybe Egypt seas
720p?
Looks like is picked up a helmsman.
Want to see the insides.
Hey bro I am a professional video editor and also thumbnail
how does it feel like to be a professional youtube thumbnail? does it hurt?
@@thecoolbird13 also a thumbnail editor
I just want to say that you wanted me to edit your videos?
I’ve been hoping you would do a video on the Endurance!! You do the best shipwreck videos!
When things get rough for me, I remember Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance. If they can make it, so can we.
Thanks for showing us the Endurance. What a noble ship.
Can you imagine being stranded on sea ice in Antarctica, watching your ship get slowly crushed and destroyed? That has to have been a lonely feeling. BTW, the chain on the wheel would be the steering linkage.
I think Endurance holds a special place as a ship. She got her crew where they needed, gave them shelter and held on as long as she could until the ice became to much. Now under the sea, she continues her mission of discovery to today with her current state. She's so well preserved I'd almost call it a shame not to attempt a rasing on her. Although I'm sure the structure would fracture under the strain
The book "Endurance" by Afred Lansing is a fantastic play by play of the entire ordeal. Highly recommend
Also Frank Hurley 'South With Endurance'.
Great vid! Level of conservation is amazing
Yeah, that fresh water is a whole different level of preservation.
Crew Dragon Endurance is named after her.
The preservation is insane! Great video, sir
Why wasn’t he told there was a war on post (8.16.14) and ordered back home?
He was aware of the war but the British Admiralty gave him the go ahead to continue the mission. At the time most people believed the war would be over by late 1914 or early 1915 so halting a small expedition to Antarctica probably didn't seem like a big deal. And at the very least a successful mission would be a good morale boost for Britain.
Been looking forward to this. I knew you'd get to it. Thanks, Skynea. Take care, fair winds.
Thank you!!!
One for the algorithm
3D scan would be cool
Excellent side trip!
Earnst huh?
I really hope they'll find the Tegetthoff of the Austro-Hungarian 1872-74 arcic expedition one day.
Wooden ships shouldn't sink because wood floats. The small pieces surely should have risen to the top and been lost to time.
I'm officially an Endurance denier!! The Endurance is a fraud! It never happened!!
GRRRRRR!!!!
😂
I'm losing braincells trying to figure out if this is very crude sarcasm or stupidity.
That's amazing. The 12 minute mark is truly amazing. The size and thickness of the internal hull planking. For comparison look at the rigging blocks and portholes. I would say the internal planks are 3 to 4 inches thick. The detail is mind blowing even the wood grain can be seen. Today just finding the wood (trees) needed to build such a ship might very well be impossible
Polaris -> Southern Cross ?
“No, Endurance” :/
There's actually an album based on the Shackleton Expedition called Bones of Brave Ships by British prog metal band Suns of the Tundra. It is a very good album and I highly recommend it.
I‘ve seen the documentary of the exhumation of these sailors. Not for the faint-hearted but interesting nonetheless.
They all lived. Why would they be exhumed?
@@Wise4HarvestTime Isn‘t this the shackleton expedition? They burried some on beachy island or however its called. Or am I confusing something?
@@GuentherVanRaven
Are you not thinking of Scott’s expedition ?
@@Carrera-gp9od Scott, ehm, is that the guy who raced against amundsen for the south pole?
What I remember is an expedition going from atlantic to pacific over canada/alaska. The guys were british I think and at the beginning of the expidition some guys died and they were burried on a small island. The 3 graves are still on this island.
The rest of the crew died and they cannibalized each other and I remember this specific fact wasn‘t told in britain after the news came up. Was the ship called Erebus? Ah man, I know that story is true i just can‘t remember and I don‘t have the guts to look it up 🥴
@@Carrera-gp9od I think I found the name of the expedition: Franklin‘s Expedition. Two ships, Erebus and Terror.
