How to make your own lead fishing weights
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- In this video I show you how to make a wooden model of a fishing weight on the lathe. Then you can use it to make a sand mold. Finally you can cast lead into the mold to get a metal duplicate of your design.

Good video. But it's a lot of work for just one weight
LOTTAAAAA WORK FOR 1 LEAD @ HAVING TO KEEP REBUILDING THE MOLD TO MAKE MORE.
This work is extraordinary in the sense that it shows in a single video the technique of manufacturing wooden models, sand molding processes, casting, and pouring, which are widely employed in metal foundries for parts of various types and sizes. However, for the artisanal production of fishing sinkers, there are other much simpler and more practical methods. I use a permanent mold (made of aluminum), which is much more practical and allows for a much higher production speed. Additionally, the finished piece is of better quality. However, its construction was done through professional machining processes.
Certainly a lot of work for something one could purchase. Nice work none the less.
Thank you
so much of effort making a single mold..
if i want to make a dozen i"ll have to repeat this process several times..
but still good job.. appreciate it
Thank you
I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.
Did an awesome job but that was a lot of work for one weight that you could buy for a dollar
Terrific! I can't help but hold my breath all the through the mould making and the casting! Excellent vid Dimitris, great job all round mate!
Thanks man! :)
You did a very good job.
Although, you should use a more permanent material other than sandcast.
The whole process for only ONE (good looking) SINKER? Ok, then I'll go fishing with a Sparkplug (as a sinker)!!!!!
Lol I've pulled my fair share of sparkplugs from my local waters. I've used rocks as sinkers and pinecone as bobbers. It's not ideal but it works when needed.
@@wtfbehindyou1892 LOL, has being way long time. But anyway, you missed the point Pal.
a nice little project to kill some time but a single use mould isnt practical
all that work for 1 lead weight?
That's called craftmanship.
@@mw-tj6ob its called wasting time.
@@EverestNguyen then why the hell are you watching this video, seems like a much bigger waste of time to me.🤡🤡
@@mw-tj6ob fyi i didn't watch the middle. this is not feasible, not efficient way to produce weights. i thought you might have something that's doable. thanks for wasting my time.
Very cool process, I love the incorporation of woodworking and metalworking! Cheers from Canada!
Thank you, greetings from Greece
Μπράβο Δημήτρη!!!! Καταπληκτική δουλειά!!!! Και πολύ ποιοτικό το βίντεο!!!!
Σε ευχαριστώ πολυ
Dude! I'm making something really similar now and you've given me quite a few tips. I'm going to make six at a time though. I don't have the patience.
Nice to hear that. Good luck on your build.
Wow, you have done a great job! It is like magic, I loved this! Thank you for the lecture...
just incase you dont have a lathe go buy a cheap chess set for a few dollars and use the pieces to make your casting.
Yeah let me get my table saw, lathe, drill press an all the other tools to make this at home!
Yeah right!
I smell sarcasm
Man I hope you don’t loose your lead on the first cast. The retie will take ages.
Useful video. Thanks.
thank you
So I need a bench saw, laithe, glue gun, wood , lead, and few odds and ends ....I'll buy them
....but brilliant process 👏
A good job with lots of effort, not worth it to make a single piece only.
Very nice packing and framework!
Nice work as always!
thank you my friend
Wow👍👍
Good job but to much work Wal-Mart has a 5 pack for 99 cents
Πολύ ωραίο και χρήσιμο
Ευχαριστώ Στέλιο
Very cool and fun to watch but completely inefficient if you wanted to make more lol
How to use 10 tools in the first min I don't have to do a simple task
All that work for one lead, then start all over again...😔 There are easier ways
Definitely there are. But it was a good excuse to present metal casting in sand moulds.
Cool sinker. At least it's calculated for tuna. Joke.
GooD)))))))
lol :)
Useful and beautiful, sir.
thank you my friend
That is way to much work. Just make an aluminum mold or easiest, a high temp silicone mold. We use them all the time.

Hello 👋 my Lovely 😊
Welcome 🙏 thanks so much Goodbye 👋🌹❤️
@@ScrapwoodCity You've definitely got a fan there mate!
Definitely should have cut that zip tie at a 45!
That was a fun video, Dimitris...what was the red clay substance you used in the mold?
Thank you, it's casting sand
Casting sand is 10%clay 90 percent aquarium sand or regular play sand (aquarium sand is finer and gives more detail) you could also do 20 percent clay and a bit of water not too much
A lot of work but Nice job
can you show me how to make lead weight for cast net
Hello..i really like your projects...i really want you to make the arabic oud...just the simplest way...and...make 2...i wanna buy one....haha..i couldn't even buy from shops because the price is too expensive in my country
Thank you very much. I really love oud. Perhaps I will try to make one at some point.
@@ScrapwoodCity also make for me...huhu..😭😂😂
All that for one lead ? £1.10 each think I'll buy them🤷♂️
Way to much work for that
A lot of work for a simple $3 weight
cool video... but that was a $70 weight.... maybe the economics don't work for making them by this process... unless you already have everything used?
Too much work for 1 lead
Cool video, but I'm scared about lead fumes, I believe that's poisonous...
Yes you need good ventilation when you do that
You did all that work for that one sinker??? Extremely impractical. And who has or wants a lathe? I know I don't. Don't like this personally
MANY places have been making lead fishing weights illegal to use over the last two decades.
It's worth checking with your local Fish & Wildlife people. (Or whatever your country happens to call them.)
We call that body the Government
Gotta keep us safe!
@Unco Bazz And that is where your perspective becomes the problem.
It's not about the individual. Or even the "us" group of humans.
It was very clear that large amounts of lead fishing weights were ending up in places where we don't want lead (read...pretty much anywhere).
These rules are good for everything and everyone, at the cost of a minor inconvenience to a tiny TINY percentage of people. That's a win.
@@Prophes0r Parts of what you say I agree with regarding all parties affected by human pollutants but please remember this, lead occurs naturally on seafloors in massive sulfides (SMS), which are associated with both active and inactive hydrothermal vents along oceanic ridges
Elevated Lead exposure in animals occurs mainly from ingestion e.g waterfowl eating lead-shot
Lead sinkers in a marine environment react readily with chlorine to form an innocuous compound PbCl2 an inert non soluble salt which is white in colour
Obviously there are issues with the accumulation of heavy metals like mercury in the food chain via filter feeding molluscs affecting humans like Minamata disease but I’m not sure how inert lead salts enter the food chain?
@@uncobazz3848 A significant increase was found in freshwater and associated wetlands.
If you allow it in one but not the other the problem becomes enforcement. Which is nearly impossible.
Eliminating the source is MUCH easier, and the hardships are nearly zero since other (cheap) sinkers are available. In my area, you can get cast-iron sinkers for less than the lead ones used to cost. They may rust, but considering how many sinkers get lost anyway, longevity isn't really that big an issue.
@@Prophes0r This was due to Lead-shot from guns as per my example, that practice has ceased because birds INJEST the shot. Don't actively participate in your own incarceration and by default, ours by locking us out of nature using faulty wholistic logic. Running to the big picture conveniently misses the devil in the detail, the place where where people start learning critical thinking, I hope this helps the people who are following this discussion
First cast snag would be upsetting
Well, that was easy?????? LOL
all that work for 1 weight and you cant reuse the mold.... only on youtube
