"Servant" and "slave" is being thrown around to make it seem like he was basically doing menial tasks. There's evidence that Yasuke did body guard work in India before arriving in Japan with the Portuguese. Retainers were also often employed for military tasks. There's Japanese artwork from the period of a black man in upper class Portuguese clothing which Thomas Lockley (associate professor of history at Nihon University Tokyo) suspects is of Yasuke which suggests that he must have been relatively wealthy and well connected. All this information can be found easily but it seems like most people have done no research and are just making a big deal out of the fact he wasn't officially a samurai. There are so many well-known male Japanese shinobis and samurais that they could have chosen instead of Yasuke, who very little is known about. The fact that he was a real person doesn't even matter because he didn't do anything outstanding to justify being one of the main characters. This decision was solely motivated by their agenda. And since there's not much information about him, Ubisoft is just going to make things up and create a false story around his character, portraying him as some kind of prominent samurai hero who is more important than all the actually popular Japanese shinobis and samurais they could have chosen. They really need to stop with this woke nonsense. They think they're helping us, but all they're doing is fueling more hatred towards us.
Give me a break. This isn’t even the first time Yasuke was been in a major video game but since he’s the main character now it’s an issue. This game series regularly has players doing magical bs but the moment a black person is center stage, now everyone suddenly becomes history majors. “He didn’t do anything significant in real life” shouldn’t you be more worried about what he’s gonna do in the game? As a black person to another black person you sound like a pick me for people who complain about “wokeness” and “DEI” in ANYTHING we’re in.

Everything on Google says he was a Samarai. All the articles from publications, too.
A black samurai that existed in history is"forced diversity". You picked a hell of a way to say "I'm racist".
By the way: Yasuke was roughly one year in japan and a servant of Nobunaga before he was captured and killed or sent away. Not enough time to learn japanese and become a Samurai that can actualy fight. Not a single source tells us that he was more than a servant. That is more wishful thinking than based on scholarship. The wikipage quotes only netflix and the anemie for that.
From what I have learned he was a retainer of Nobunaga's, so basically a bodyguard. He was freed from Servitude after Nobunaga was killed, and he returned home. Never a Samurai. Would have prefered to play, you know, Japanese male protag in our Japanese game.
@@jeebbers5195 Freed from servitude ? Given back as a slave to its former masters ... i won't call that "freed from servitude".
@@jeebbers5195These comments are misinformation... retainers ARE samurais but with a lot more benefits. In feudal Japan during the 1500s, a retainer, known as a "samurai" or "vassal," served a lord (daimyo) in various capacities. The primary purpose of a retainer was to provide military service and protection to their lord. In addition to their role as warriors, retainers could also be involved in administrative duties, managing lands, collecting taxes, and serving as advisors or officials within the lord's domain. Their loyalty and service were crucial for the lord's power and stability, and in return, retainers were granted land, stipends, or other forms of reward and protection. Also Yasuke was believed to enter Japan in the 1570s. And sent to a European Christian Church in Osaka Japan during the 1580s where it was speculated that he was ambushed because Europeans hated the idea of a black man in power.

@@spinningbackkick6021 I know. Learning is hard.
Yasuke was given the title of Samurai by Nobunaga. One didn’t have to necessarily have to be appointed, or “knighted” the traditional way to become a samurai at the time. The simple fact that he was a weapon holder and simultaneously a body guard for Nobunaga stands to contest that very claims that he was never given the title. There’s also various accounts of his battles. Just because he wasn’t viewed as the traditional samurai he certainly wasn’t just a mere servant. Also, I’ve yet to find a single source that confirms Yasuke’s status as a mere weapon’s bearer. Yasuke was also never given a short sword, but a Koshigatana. That’s a misconception due to the mistranslations of Louis Fruis’ letter.
