  • This is a do-over of a previous video where I received feedback that folks couldn't see the speed because my phone was in the way. Well, it wasn't my phone. It was a powerbank. You were half right. This time we have a Garmin Montana 700i tracking speed and elevation. The climb is approximately 6% and I weigh about 240lbs with gear. On the Garmin screen, the big number is overall average speed. Above that and to the right is current mph. Top left is current elevation.
If you want to see how a little Honda Minimoto CT125 attacks Rim of the World Highway climbing out of San Bernardino, watch this video.

The onboard speedometer seems to be pretty generous. About 4 mph fast. I wonder if this affects the odometer as well?

I'll have to pay closer attention. This was the first run with a real GPS (not phone) monitoring speed. This bike is so slow, I rarely look at the speedometer. It also isn't the easiest to read. I only care about the speed because of the time constraints of my upcoming trip. I'm sure the odometer is off by the same amount that the speedometer is. They will be even less accurate when I throw different tires and sprockets on in the future.

Looks like you need the bolt-on- big bore kit from Honda in Asia! My son and i have 2-1979 CT's that run great, but because I'm lighter have more HP. I'm 175 he's 275, and we have been to Big Bear many times to ride. Because you have computer controlled jetting you get the max HP!! Last time out we rode to Butler Peak Lookout and barely made it to the top sputtering. Just the electronic controlled jetting is the greatest thing. But no Hi-Lo tranny kills it for me. Always a PIA to figure jetting on the older CT's. Mine would do 30MPH in 4th gear up the hill, but son would do 25MPH in 3rd screaming it! You gotta have more guts than a slaughterhouse to have ridden up the hill in the 60's and 70's, locals were terrible back then when it was one lane!!! Some day Honda should build a 175cc ct with Hi-Lo tranny w/18"&19" wheels, just dreaming.

I really just need to lose the 20lbs I gained during the holidays. Still, I think maintaining an average of 39 up 6% is pretty good. It is a little concerning given I need to maintain an average of 42 to hit 1000 miles in 24 hours for my upcoming trip. I guess we'll see.

One thousand miles in 24 hours? Yeah right.

Not a bad rate given everything. I am about 30lbs more than you and climb just a bit faster on my 155cc bike.
On my lil bike if I downshift and run it just south of the rev limit I climb a faster, but obviously at the expense of dramatically increased fuel consumption. Not sure if the gearing on the CT would give you the same result.

I was lighter before I ate all of those holiday cookies over the last 3 months. I'm on a crash diet trying to lose whatever excess I can to make up for all of the weight I'll be carrying in April's attempt.
I had already downshifted. The entire ride up the hill was in 3rd gear. 2nd gear isn't tall enough to reach 40mph and 4th is too tall to keep up momentum.
