Mr. Quackenbush I really have to thank you. Im a fan of both you and chikara and have watched almost every video on the channel and its opened my eyes to an array of ideas and inspiration and motivation. I started training in the ny metro area in 2015 and I love stepping into the ring. But I've found a much more interesting outlet for my creativity. It's my dream to build a promotion and have alot of great ideas. Any tips for first time promoters on the topics of building a promotion from ground up and do you have any tips on how to construct shows?

Indie wrestling is where most guys get their start when they break in. Rookies learn in front of small crowds while gaining experience and exposure. Indie wrestling also features veteran talent who may have at one time been signed to a major promotion which helps small companies draw a crowd due to name value. Many indie promotions will match up their top local acts against established tv stars to raise their stock in the fans eyes. Once local stars are perceived as stars locally, they can then be used to build the local promotion around. As a wrestler becomes more confident and creates a buzz about themself, they look to break into mainstream wrestling by networking with many of the big names they've worked with and using them as references to get into bigger companies. They travel more hoping to catch a break. On the Indies you'll see numerous matchups that would presumably never happen on tv. You'll see up and coming stars getting the rub from former world champions. You'll have legends climbing into the ring with other legends. Or you'll see two or more unknowns tear the roof off the joint, never to be heard from again! Indie wrestling is like Bizzarro world... And I LOVE IT! Thanks Mike

Indie wrestling is just small time promotions. Before the mid 80s it was a polite term for Outlaw/Opposition promotions.

I first discovered indy rasslin in 2017. Since then, i have been to an average of two shows a month. I do watch some mainstream wrestling, but indy stuff is my jam!
    Your punk analogy is spot-on.
My hometown promotion ran its 5 year anniversary show in april, and featured their first cage match...
But the cage zeke had ordered was not ready, so he got some animal-wire panels, 2x4s, and zip ties and they cobbled together a flimsy cage. It made for a unique match.
Perhaps that's why ZOWA Live is my favorite rasslin show.

Hey Mr. Quackenbush i have some questions about being an indie wrestler
1: Let's say Pro Wrestling was something that wasn't my primary career, would it work out if i was hypothetically a oart time indie wrestler if that was my aspirations?
2: When your an indie wrestler, do you still have to worry about music rights? Like let's say i wanted Miserlou as my theme when wrestling at an indie show that isn't filmed, would i still have to worry about it?
3: How much creative freedom do you have as an indie wrestler?

The only area your analogy falls short in is that I feel like many of the indie wrestlers of today were inspired by watching the WWE, not in spite of the WWE. And their ultimate goals are to join the mainstream wrestling organizations. I doubt GG Allin was inspired by Journey or ultimately strived to be a member of Chicago.

Well said! Sometimes, I think the way indy wrestling is a response to the mainstream, really is rooted in admiration. I was watching an interview with the members of Husker Du in which they talked about secretly loving the Beatles, but never being able to admit it. It would have made them seem "uncool" in the formative days of that scene. I think that's very much in line with what you are saying about WWE in this day and age. Within wrestling, it's not cool to be a fan of the "evil corporate empire," but there's no denying that lots of people what it, take cues from it, and are inspired by it.

😆 15:10 The eyes of a comedian are revealing. Your too tempted not to commit to this joke as you now realize how the wording sounds. 😆

I'm at 2:54 & I'm not hearing what I thought I might for the long answer. I should've known better maybe. I suspect Mike knows more about National Wrestling Alliance and even pre-NWA wrestling , and could give a better answer, buy it would lack the gloss and glorification of the answer he's giving. And why not glorify independent wrestling, seeing how he is an independent wrestler.

Early punks in London LIKED Disco. They all used to go to a lesbian disco in Soho called Louise 's and dance to Love Hangover by Diana Ross.

They also didn't care about Authenticity. Most of them were big Glam Rock fans into Roxy Music, Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust and especially T.Rex. Marc Bolan declared himself Godfather of Punk and most British punks were happy to play along with this. The New York Dolls' were seen as the Missing Link between Glam and Punk.

I said similar things to friends and co-workers who ask me about wrestling. Of course, I think this is spot on.

Let’s say I start my wrestling promotion in the indies. Can I transform into the mainstream if business is good?

    • @TilWeMakeIt

Well, a different way of looking at that is this: do you have corporate sponsorship, and a big enough budget to offer people exclusive contracts? If so, you are no longer playing at the independent level.
