    Something else they don't tell you about Gelatinous Cubes:
    It's actually fairly common to have "domesticated" cubes serve as waste disposal in sewers and outhouses. They can't climb, so you're safe if you stick them in a deep enough hole, and they can't dissolve non-organic tissue, so they can't eat their way out, so you aren't in any actual danger if you use them in this capacity.

    I had a penchant for throwing these at my players, and apparently it annoyed them. Instead of telling me this, one player committed suicide to save the rest of the party, then made a character called 'John Acid-Killer'. He toted baking soda, ammonia, borax, a bunch of seemingly random shit that he'd pack into little canisters. I let him, because I was curious. I found out when he threw them at a cube.

      @Micras08 4 роки тому +37

      I think that's an other mistake in the stat block. It makes sense that they would seek out warmth if they want to consume living tissue, so with that in mind I would just house-rule that they are resistant to fire and vulnerable to cold :)

    • @GeminiOrion9
      @GeminiOrion9 4 роки тому +37

      I think it might be more of a stimulus thing. A gelatinous cube wants to eat organic material, which is considerably warmer than the cold steel of their armor and weapons. A purposely cold area could be more of telling a cube that there's nothing there to eat, so the cube will wander elsewhere. That's how I see it, anyways

    • @CourtneyRoberts1982
      @CourtneyRoberts1982 4 роки тому +14

      It's explained as more and aversion to cold because they assume it's nothing they can eat. Resistance to Fire doesn't make any sense because they are mostly composed of water and fire would evaporate the water, making them shrink. That's why dust of dryness turns it into a sugar cube until it is rehydrated.

    Excellent video! At the 6:30 mark, when discussing the union of two gelatinous cubes into a "supercube", the exposition tells us the combined cube is "twice as big"; for clarity, it should be noted that logic suggests this really means having "twice the VOLUME", growing in size to be about twelve and a half feet on a side in cube shape instead of ten feet. (Squeezed into an archetypal ten-foot-wide by ten-foot-tall passageway, a supercube might certainly have "twice the FOOTPRINT" of a standard cube alone, taking up twenty feet of passage...) Keep up the great work.

They would end up collapsing mine shafts and other supports unless they are made out of metal and then you got the rust monsters to worry about. I like the shorter videos since they're easier to find time to watch. Pretty sure I encountered one of these the first time my party went into a dungeon playing Basic D&D (or maybe Advanced D&D) in 1981. Since I didn't know the proper pronunciation at the time, I called it a jell-oh-ten-us cube!
    Also, good on you for donating proceeds.

    4e DnD had a tiny gelatinous cube as a familiar option. They were fanatastic haha. They could eat 1lb of matter per round if you just kind of put them up against it, which led to some great stuff like slowly pushing your tiny hand sized cube into the hinge or lock of a door to "unlock" it.

      It's my headcanon in dnd that all slimes are actually super friendly and try to be affectionate to the humanoids they meet but because of their acidic properties they accidentally hurt them and have developed a undeserved reputation because of this.

    • @Cubics_Rube
      @Cubics_Rube 3 роки тому

      @@rqatkins I'm not sure how MrRhexx does it exactly, but I suspect he just simply googles something like "Gelatinous Cube" - in this case - and than goes on a Pintrest/Imgur/Reddit art hunt. That's how I would do it.
      It's not really fair to the artists but sadly most of the time the places they have artwork reuploaded also rarely mention the source.
      But anyway, it's a splendid job you did on this art (and all the other GCP art). I also didn't expect the original artists to pop-up in the comments. 😀

    I have one request... can you do a Gelatinous Cubes 2? I feel like there was more you could go into about them lol... I saw @Erick Christensen leave a comment about how there's a sentient cube!? I need all cube facts! I need more information about the details of cube wrangling!

    Great subject for the deep dive treatment. The heat thing really makes them more interesting.
    Imagine what a clever (and careful) party with Mold Earth could do with one of these following them through the dungeon "guarding" their flank and stopped by quick mold earth curbs when needed.

    I remember one campaign my party and I created a dungeon with a few of these guys. We would put a bounty out saying something or rather was stolen and lied in the dungeon. There was a trap, after getting half way in a gelatinous cube was released near the entrance and wiped out all the npc adventurers and leaving behind their gear. We of course collected it, kept the good stuff and sold off the extra which is how we kept a good bounty for attracting new adventurers.
    To reset the trap we froze then levitated the cube back into place.

    I think the acid damage on the attack was put there to remove what was basically just another save or die effect. Which there were a LOT of save or die stuff in previous editions. Yes, 5e was made quite a bit easier then previous editions but personally I feel that that isn't something to purely think of as a flaw. From a storytelling perspective, not having as much save or die stuff is great.
