Nope, not necessarily. Ahriman and Jazirian created whole world from raw unshaped chaos, which is easier to change/affect than defined/created worlds. Then fought over where to place centre of universe and lost a lot of power. Then people (all inteligent races) started to belive in gods, some where created from concepts, some ascended from mortals. They have a LOT of power INSIDE already established worlds, inside their aspects of influence. In my opinion if we let average god fight Jazirian/Ahriman, god would win, however if he would even be able to finish of one of the serpants is dubious to me. Still some Elder evils have powers that render gods weak or even useless. But great serpants are not gods, so they are unaffectes. That one time Asmodeus (Ahriman) single-handedly beat one of the Elder Evils, which killed many GODS, and then imprisoned him. I wounder what maner of artifact could one create from blood of Ahriman ruinnig in thick rivers inside deep fractures of Ninth layer of 9 Hells, Nessus. I mean, she's not exactly alone. Ilsensine is a greater god with a handful of clerics, Kanchelsis is an intermediate deity with no clerics, Urdlen is an intermediate deity with a tiny priesthood...
@@LordMortanius A deity's power is not only dependent on how many worshipers they have but also how intense their worship is and how broad their portfolio is. A god of death (Nerull for this example) is understandably not going to be very popular with the average person, but all mortals are doomed to die (barring a few exceptions) and that happening on a constant and multi-planar scale every moment of every single day gives him more than enough power to achieve greater deity status. Watch Arch-Warhammer's video on the warp from the Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 universe to get a better idea of how this works.
Its funny that the day I started to draw the Couatl. This video was released. I am challenging myself to draw every creature from A-Z that has pictures in the monster manual.
There is a Warlock in my D&D campaign I was running (on hiatus because of the Quarantines), who's Otherworldly Patron is a Couatl. This is awesome extra information and backstory to add to my established lore! Thank you so much!
This is really sad, such a provocative monster, with such legendary power, is only a C.R. 4. I understand the need to create balance for the whole game, but at least do this majestic creature some justice and say these are the stats of a juvenile Couatl! These are my favorite design, emphasizing beauty in simplicity, with so much story potential. It actually baffles me that there's not more lost history of the this race. Keep it up man!
At the very least, and I say this about a lot of things in 5e, 5e itself is a very malleable game. That can be the stat block of a young Couatl if you want. Then you can just buff it up to make it more powerful for what an adult or a well-trained Couatl would be like.
Can't wait to annoy some DM by going like "well, modern non-traditional definitions of lying entail that lying can consist of simply withholding information with the intent to deceive, without making any statement at all... 🤓 what now? The couatl eats me? Aww..not again" but seriously, can't say how much I love these really in-depths videos about D&D even if I haven't played in over a decade.
It wouldn't sell. D&D lore books have never historically sold well which is why WoC cut back a lot on fluff. D&D is a game system. People want to play the game and not read a ton of lore they will never need or use. Most DMs homebrew or modify any so-called canon. They only need a little bit of lore and then create their own lore. For these videos, it is fine to go ultra nerdy on lore if a DM or player can pick up an idea. But in reality, an official D&D book with tons of lore would flop
I don't think so. Lizardfolk live very pastoral lives, unconcerned with improvement of themselves, their race, or the world. They are content with what they have and only seek to continue the traditions of their ancestors. Compare that to the couatls who are always gathering knowledge and live in a place of constant self-improvement.
@@kindoflame but they do attach themselves to powerful local beings and the coutals do live in similar regions as yaunti and coutals. they could seek out the coutal or the coutal could take pity on the lizardfolk
@@spenhaPot I guess if the Lizardfolk were in a really bad spot, like if there were a plague, a coutal would help them. However, that would be a one-off thing, not a sustainable relationship. Coutals by nature do not typically interfere with the business of humanoid races, so why would the coutal stick around once the immediate danger passed? Why would one spend time with the Lizardfolk, who fundamentally do not value the same things, when there are elves, Dragonborn, and Aarakocra they could be exchanging knowledge with?
@@kindoflame I'm not talking about the entire lizardfolk race just a small (if not single) clan. Yes the coutal do move around but that is the refrence of their lifespan. Which is centuries if not thousands of years long as opposed to that one lizrd folk tribe where they might come close to half a century if they are lucky. The coutal could be learning about an ancient ruin in the area and while they are at it are helping the lizard folk against the profane aboration that would be the nearby yaunti cannibles and their constant barrage of dark magic, curses, and bio weapons. yes their time together would be short but the lizard folk would still possibly see the coutal as a potential ally that might help if they call enough to it. That might even be a quest. the local lizardfolk want to know where their god went so you go on a quest to find out that it moved on and you know have the option of helping them deal with the problem the yauntis still pose.
Love this, it makes the RP part of Dnd so much better when it comes to interactions with creatures outside of combat. It also seems to make designing their "lair" so much easier by knowing what they do or think. (Putting jungle cat bones on the floor of a couatl)
I'm a new player to D&D with an interest in DMing. When I saw these guys in the monster manual, I instantly fell in love with them. I wish it had all this extra information on them though because they are seriously like 200x cooler to me now. Thanks for making this content. :D

Rhexx, you are an inspiration. The sheer nerdiness of this channel is mind blowing, your presentation is great and your voice is soothing. Keep doing these man!
Couatls are amazing- great information in this presentation. I am DMing in Eberron however, your videos are so helpful no matter the setting to nail down the general ethos and universal lore of the creatures. Keep up the great work!
Great video. Given how little we actually know about the upper planes and celestials in 5th edition, videos like these are really helpful. The Trials of Mount Celestia in particular sound like they would make a good adventure.
Mount Celestia's concept actually sounds a lot like the concept of Mictlan, the Underworld of Mesoamerican mythology, thats cool, it has less skinning of you metaphorical soul though, which is less cool.
Can confirm a great deal about this presented lore... having done extensive research into couatl lore myself for a major player character in my current campaign. Well done on this video, MrRhexx.
The sincerity in that subscription pitch. I get tired of people telling me to smash stuff at the end of their videos like a grandmother running back to get a 4th tin of leftovers.
Got in earlier than ever, and found even more important things to fix the background conflicts in my campaign before they come to be the actual front conflicts, which might be soon. Other than that it's also another great video
All this talk of Celestia makes me think of a reverse campaign. You always see an Aasimar or Paladin fighting against demons and devils in the 9 hells or abyss, but it makes me think of a group of evil adventurers going on an crusade to defeat something residing on mount celestia. Maybe I'm crazy...
@@archmicthelegend5912 Oh, the point of the campaign was to be blatantly evil characters, but they started stepping on each other's toes and meta-gaming until I told them all to grow up. The campaign actually ended on a high note, with several characters even finding ways to help save the world they ruined in a way that furthered their goals. I'm actually running a sequel legacy campaign set 200 years after it, and they're eating it up.
@@thezerowulf507 Quetzalcoatl was the only mesoamerican god that was against human sacrifice, his brother Tezcatlipoca and Huitzilopozhtli were the main gods for human sacrifice in the ancient mexica culture.
Loved this video. I've been a big fan of Coatls since I saw them in the monster manual. Sadly I've never encountered one in a campaign. Please do more celestial creatures!
In my campaigns, the poison of Couatls is whatever kind they wish. Literally any kind of poison, including magical effects to merely purely natural acid burns to psionic shock. As for the gods who spawned them, I was a life long fan of all mythologies... including some Central Native American lore. My campaign universe is Loom of Magus. The AD&D universe was spawned by two of the Loom Dragons breaking from their eternal drift of apathy (I did not have an origin for those until those serpent "gods"). The parasites that developed lives on the surface of the Loom Dragons were long since hungering for life outside of being mere parasites (the Crystonians, the first humanoid race of Loom of Magus). Upon seeing what their rogues created, they created Loom of Magus, both finite and infinite, and parked it parallel to the AD&D universe. Physically speaking, Loom of Magus is spherical space 100,000 Light Years in diameter, having a solar system every 4-9 light-years from each other, and each having outer plane pockets each linked to and limited in size to the Loom of Magus god that rules the area. Also, it has an infinite number of parallel prime material planes and is temporally vague. Its origin is trillions (maybe billions) of years ago but it is far newer than the first loom dragons' creation (origin of the Couatls). The original humanoids (the Crystonians) are pretty much eons extinct via their own sh^t.
Gotta say I love that Dungeons and Dragons represents mythological metaphor so accurately. Spirituality is something of a special interest of mine and the lore reflects human tradition and philosophy very appropriately.
You didn't state it's profound strength, and command with the use of polymorph. This is one of the main reason that Couatl's are actually so ridiculously rare to find out there in the world. They are in part so rare, because they spend a incredibly tiny amount of their life existing in it's "natural Couatl Dragon state". A party could in fact have met comparatively large numbers of Couatl! Perhaps even befriending one at some point, though they just knew it as a particularly hepful NPC, that was always super eager to hear all about the parties exploits, loving to listen to every detail about each individual person's life... Though not raising any fearful suspicions, something about them renders you feeling insignificant in their presence... This feeling persists despite the Couatl finding everything you tell them about yourselves with never-ending genuine interest, and each of your personal life anecdote. Stating almost ad-nauseam to you how after hearing of your qualities, hobbies, desires, prowess, and skills you've attained are each sequentially more impressive the previous. ""Change Shape. The couatl magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating equal to or less than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (the couatl's choice). In a new form, the couatl retains its game statistics and ability to speak, but its AC, movement modes, Strength, Dexterity, and other actions are replaced by those of the new form, and it gains any statistics and capabilities (except class features, legendary actions, and lair actions) that the new form has but that it lacks. If the new form has a bite attack, the couatl can use its bite in that form.""
Yesss.... I used a Couatl as a major plotpoint in my campaign; ua-cam.com/video/2TCKpbGXb7g/v-deo.html and it was fun to play around with all those possibilities of a 'lawful good snake in the grass' kind of magical creature.
Grate video I've used so much of this in my home game. It made up a grate deal of info for one of my dwarf Npcs. Even used that dwarf saying at the end.
In my campaign, my players have slowly been uncovering the mystery between Jazirian, Asmodeus, and the origin of the multiverse. These videos have been a huge help with that!
I was trying to find a way to incorporate this kind of idea in my own campaign ever since the asmodeus video, but I've had no idea how to go about this.
@@augmundfireweave5348 How I did it is I tied it some grand conspiracy between the gods. I started by sending my players on a quest from the gods in exchange for a wish, and over time they've discovered the gods haven't told them the whole story. They're keeping secrets from the party about the nature of their quest. I also homebrewed a supreme-level god named Chaos who was born when Asmodeus and Jazirian split. I characterized Chaos as a god of change and freedom and a champion of mortals. So when he found out Asmodeus was consuming unclaimed souls who he could eventually destroy the multiverse and start over, Chaos broke into Baatot and stole those souls. For his crimes, Chaos was imprisoned in Carceri, and he's been trying to free himself and get the word out ever since. And since one of my players is a warlock of Chaos, it's made divulging those secrets easier

I don't know if you have a set schedule for which monsters you do, but I would love to see a video on different types of fae. Darklings have a really interesting story and would love to know more about them
Hey you should do a video on what they don't tell you about humans because I have wondered for a while about them in d&d specifically who created them or how they came to be
Me too. It is very unclear. Lady of Pain at the top. Then Overgods, Then most Gods, Then Great Serpents(Jarizan, Ahriman), Lesser gods, Halfsgods, Demigods,
Mage Aramil it’s meant to be unclear. There isn’t much of a strict hierarchy of power because gods powers are much more abstract than other beings. That’s why they usually aren’t given stat blocks. The only thing that is certain is that the dm is above every god.
@@magearamil8626 This GoH theory really gets around, but Ahriman is a demon prince. Jazzy sits at the top of the divine hierarchy as a multispheric greater deity, alongside pantheon heads like Garl, Corellon, Zeus, Odin and so forth. The actual deific hierarchy is greater power > intermediate power > lesser power > demipower (true gods).
I really enjoy listening to your lore descriptions. This video touches a little on the different planes. Do you think you'll make videos about each of the planes of existence?
Great job once again sir. Your hard work is not going unnoticed. I would personally love to To so some lore videos on Dark sun campaign setting lore. But I understand there is a lot of unknown Ferune lore to cover. Just something to consider. I love darksun lore. Keep up to good work.
Hey Rhexx can you do a video about the Gith and their relation to Mindflayers? Or maybe make a full episode on the Blood War? Love you content budy keep it up !
Not the blood war. Its dump and makes all good look like cowards who are doomed to loose to evil. To me it feels added in to just explain why the PCs are important. Ie why no Angel comes down to smite some summed demon.
I wonder if Jazirion and the forgotten reals god Qotal from Maztica are actually the same or have any relation, they have the same aparience, they are both ausent and have an evil brother.
Qotal is the child of the adulterous union of Xymor & Maztica. Xymor being a Draconic god, he is the brother of Yaldabaoth (Tiama). He led the humans to the lands of what was to become the MAZTICA continent.
Played Descend to Avernus as an Yuan-Ti Paladin who is a fellower of Qotal, a feathered serpent/dragon god of the Forgotten Realms (but currently missing) and it was the best choice i could make going into the adventure blind and finishing it with glory.
21:13 I've listened to this 5 times. What is he saying?? "challenge another pilgrim because virtue untested is merely innocence" Challenge them to what? Chess? Poker? A battle to the death? I'm so confused as to WHAT the challenge IS.
So the consept of virtue, is wholey dependent on the persons ideals, so the challange for one my be a trivial thing for another so by over coming someone you deem to be a strong Opponent, you will hopfully see how you can grow. Thats kinda the point of self improvent. So the challange depends on the person. That help?
In my DnD campaign, there is a recurring antagonist who is a Yuan-TI priest of Quetzalcoatl who is a villain only because he believes the best way to improve the world is by testing individuals and weeding out those who will not better themselves. He truly believes what he is doing is for the best, but his methods are anything but kind. Though knowing more about the coatls themselves, I’ve now got a few ideas on how to incorporate them into his story and motivations.
APSingh The Yuan-TI have a lot of serpent gods they worship, Merrshaulk probably included. I decided to have him follow Quetzalcoatl because I wanted him to be a follower of a good deity to make him a bit more complex than the standard evil priest.
OSRS has conditioned me lol. When you said you are better off trying to find a unicorn I thought of the running joke in RuneScape quests that there are no normal horses, only unicorns. The closest thing to a horse in hornless unicorns lol.
I am literally making a Yuan-Ti Sorcerer inspired by Quetzalcoatl and I am looking into Couatls with my DM as celestials and deities . This video cannot come at a better time for me!
"With this time shift ability, the Coatl can see into the future for 20 seconds..." Random, corrupt, red coautl: "[KING CRIMSON] has already predicted your movements..."
I think an interesting villain would be a mind flayer colony or lich captured a couatl. They experiment on it and pump it with psyonic energy until it goes completely crazy and gains a massive upgrade to their natural psyonic abilities. I would be interesting for a group of players to stumble upon a unbelievably beautiful celestial being thriving against the withering chains binding it to the ground, only to free it and be lashed at by the panicked broken mind of a couatl. It can not only sense it’s imminent demise, but con now forever feel the pain that is yet to come due to its psyonic “gifts.” The perfect weapon
Jazirian seems more comparable to a great old one than a god to be honest, but instead of causing madness from forbidden knowledge(lovecraftian beings) or deeply embedded fears(Dendar eg) the madness is from twisting riddles, stunning beauty and tests of willpower. It would explain how they don't need to be worshipped to be powerful after all. Edit: The pact of the great old one actually works with this theme, since a lot of the abilities the warlock gains are similar to coatl abilities.
So, I've had an inkling in the back of my head to have a character with the custom background Wanderer. As in, fell through the portal, given new life, no memory, just hand tattoo and potentially horrified looks from somebody who knew who you once were. It would be dope af for that character to end up climbing the mountain
Two things I love: Couatls and Lizardfolk. In a Pathfinder Planescape game I wanted to play a Paladin and saw that the Paladin mount list included Triceratops. I had a sudden image of a feather-crested Lizardfolk in mesoamerican-styled plate armor riding a Triceratops, and decided I needed to play a Lawful Good Lizardfolk Paladin who went against the stereotypes of both his race and his alignment: a noble, cultured champion of Good who employed reason and common sense first and violence only when all else failed. To create this unusual being I asked myself, what if a Couatl adopted an enclave of Lizardfolk and led them to the Outlands to create an enclave of technologically simple but culturally sophisticated proponents of peace and good will? Thus I created the Xi-Couatl, the Couatl-Kin Lizardfolk, and Naxtlacotl of the Za'Extli-Ma clan - Paladin of Xymor and Questing Knight of Quet'Zhual, the Lord of Feather and Fang, partner to the Triceratops Chotaka'e, 'Threefold Piercer of Falsehood'. Put together a whole origin myth for them, the Atzo'e-Ma - Spawn of the Seven. I really need to play one again.
If you ever revisit couatls, Eberron's mythos concerning couatls, Maztica lore about Qotal and couatls, and lore from Serpent Kingdoms would be good sources for a sequel.
Thanks again dear Sir. I'll need to check my old books again but I could have sworn that Couatls were size Large? Medium doesn't even make sense, considering the activities and mechanisms of the critter (large, colourful wings). Now I suppose it's easy enough to just make them large for a campaign/one-shot but I'd prefer historical accuracy (relative) to my inclinations. I'm also very happy you mentioned the ability for it to pop in and out of the Ethereal at whim, something I was indeed familiar with. As it can also polymorph, at CR-4 it could certainly appear as a large intimidating beast/humanoid should the need arise.
So the good serpent became Ao, and the bad serpent became Asmodeus Alo good point to make finally he puts here, that the lore of D&D has differed a lot, changed a lot, and things always up for question. The lore can also be changed by any DM to their whims.
I love this cosmology! I want to make a Yuan-Ti Pureblood Warlock character with Jazirian as her patron. This is a reluctant pact, and she sees her role as similar to the serpent in the Garden of Eden: To test the virtue of others to see if they have integrity and hold to their avowed values. 🐍 🍎

Of course if you were not eaten by atheis-eating revengeful great serpant.
That's awesome!
I wish I could draw well, I wish you luck!

How is it going? Did you finish? Have you uploaded your work?
There is a Warlock in my D&D campaign I was running (on hiatus because of the Quarantines), who's Otherworldly Patron is a Couatl. This is awesome extra information and backstory to add to my established lore! Thank you so much!
I HOPE they picked mask of many faces as one of their abilities
This is really sad, such a provocative monster, with such legendary power, is only a C.R. 4.
I understand the need to create balance for the whole game, but at least do this majestic creature some justice and say these are the stats of a juvenile Couatl! These are my favorite design, emphasizing beauty in simplicity, with so much story potential. It actually baffles me that there's not more lost history of the this race.
Keep it up man!
Project Cyosana yeah no that stat block is an INFANT
there iss a lot of hisstory but it'ss all lost.
At the very least, and I say this about a lot of things in 5e, 5e itself is a very malleable game. That can be the stat block of a young Couatl if you want. Then you can just buff it up to make it more powerful for what an adult or a well-trained Couatl would be like.
You're right about 5e, maybe that should be my first endeavor into homebrew.
The power of the Couatls doesnt lay in their combatorial prowess though, so a cr of 4 makes sense
Can't wait to annoy some DM by going like "well, modern non-traditional definitions of lying entail that lying can consist of simply withholding information with the intent to deceive, without making any statement at all... 🤓
what now? The couatl eats me? Aww..not again"
but seriously, can't say how much I love these really in-depths videos about D&D even if I haven't played in over a decade.
How can you lie without first having made a statement? How can you prove they are withholding information without a statement?
Is more like lying became dishonest conduct so there are two types of dishonest conduct:fabrication(the tradicional lie) and omission.

This will probably be lost in a sea of comments, but if anyone does happen to see this, I hope you'll have a good day! :)

I could imagine a lizardfolk society worshiping the coutal in opposition to nearby yaunti
@@spenhaPot Yeah, that could work.

I found your video's a long while back (idk exactly when,) back when you started the series on dragons because I wanted to learn more about dragons for my home games, but man i found so much more. Something I honestly would love to see is the lore of all the planes overall, as there is precious little in 5e
11:09 Like almost everything in early dnd...

All this talk of Celestia makes me think of a reverse campaign. You always see an Aasimar or Paladin fighting against demons and devils in the 9 hells or abyss, but it makes me think of a group of evil adventurers going on an crusade to defeat something residing on mount celestia.

Dude thank you for this! It helped me with much of the lore for an adventure I ran

Yesss.... I used a Couatl as a major plotpoint in my campaign;

He basically quotes the Greyhawk stuff as canon and ignores all Eberron lore. Which is strange for a guy who tells us what the Monster Manuel left out

So the good serpent became Ao, and the bad serpent became Asmodeus
Alo good point to make finally he puts here, that the lore of D&D has differed a lot, changed a lot, and things always up for question.
The lore can also be changed by any DM to their whims.
Jazirian and AO are two different people.
AO is not a God, he is above because he is the supreme creator of everything including the gods themselves.
that sounds interesting. do you have a way for her to have known about Jazirian?
