Not many of us get to do what we want in life but Ron Howard even at a young age had a vision of what he wanted to do in the industry and to his credit he made it happen.
There is nothing better than 70's style car crash and chase movies. I love the low budget look and feel compared to the green screen effect. The original gone in 60 seconds was and always will be better than the remake and that is what led me to this movie back in the 80's as I was growing up.
Ron Howard’s career as one of cinema’s most commercially successful and acclaimed directors began with this car crash comedy executive produced by Roger Coreman, the king of B movies.
If I remember correctly, I first saw this film in the summer of 1978 as a CBS Friday night late movie. One long car chase with lots of crashes. Perfect for a 13 year old to stay up late and watch during summer vacation.
I loved this movie when it first came out and still find it very entertaining. At least that pretty blue Seville was saved, but the Rolls Silver Shadow carnage was hard to stomach.
Surprised no one has mentioned the fact that this is Ron Howard's directorial debut. He had done Eat My Dust for Roger Corman, and in exchange for starring and co-writing another film for Corman, Ron offered to direct, and a directing career was born.
I got here after reading Ron and Clint Howard’s wonderful biography “The Boys”. He writes some very funny things about this first directorial effort which makes a fun goofy movie even more enjoyable.
Nah, these 1970s flicks are in their own unique time capsule. Let Hollywood rot with their Fake-And-Futile series, it's what Paul Walker would have wanted.
I had a beautiful uncle named Joe, He was born with a bad heart, But when ever he entered a room it lit up, Everybody loved him, He took me to the drive in a we saw this together, A night i would love to relive.
I watched this so so long ago and I couldn’t help but remember a lot of the scenes in this movie. It was old for my time, but it was a fun watch even as a kid.
@@Notantoher450 no, it means the trademark for the name is not fully owned by Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto is just a general law term for a car hijacking in USA
Well the chases themselves were a bit below average, too much speed up footage especially, but those crashes were insane. The rest of the film is great comedy though, I'm glad I watched it, thanks for the upload!
This movie was filmed in Redondo Beach California, the last scenes is on 190th going east on 190th me along with my family were standing about 3/4 of the way up the hill, when they're going down the hill on the right side there is a open area that is a dog park and baseball diamond it was pretty cool when we were all standing there watching this and then we went to the movies when it came out and saw it and it was in our area at the corner of 190th and PCH there is a car dealership that they use, it's pretty funny to watch a movie that is filmed in your hometown and you know everything and everywhere they're going
Meanwhile in 1977 most people went to see Star Wars A New Hope packed in theaters because I was there to watch it front row seats with my family at just 6 years old : )
Saw this movie at a drive in when I was 9 years old. The first drive in movie I was ever at. Sitting in the back of my parents station wagon. BTW this is the first movie Ron Howard directed.
The 70s was full of movies with grand endings, hundreds of actors, spiraling out of control, in a climatic scene... I think it started in 1963 with "Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World ",then that format was used till 1985.
oldest hippie l have played the game a couple of times myself my friend its a great game to play but don't play it a y more I think its because I grew up lol peace
You really should....5gta 5 is the most amazing imersive version of l.a. there is and it is easy to see why people play it for months at a time....its simple and you make your own fun.
Here's a Fun Fact. They were going to plan a Remake Screenplay back in 2008 but Got cancelled due to the Production Team got confused thinking that it's going to be a Film Adaptation of "Grand Theft Auto" Game Series with the Name name as this one. And the guy who Produced This 1977 Movie was going to sue Rockstar Games for the Series But Rockstar gave him Money so They Kept the name "Grand Theft Auto" Even though the Name is based off a Criminal Record.
Ron Howard born in 1954 is 4 years older than I I graduated Nampa High School in 1977 46 years later, Vegas in 2023 is different, no dial telephones, no Freemont Street, no internet
Great movie from the age of movies were there was no real plot, the cars were the stars and the more crashes, the better. However, it falls far short of "Herbie". Still an enjoyable movie.
1:16:14 Ron Howards little brother Clint playing "Ace"...mind you he is only 17 years old, not exactly the face of Hollywood...not sure how funny it was supposed to be but i laughed pretty good
Roger Corman drove Ron crazy - fewer cars, smaller crowds, longer days, cheaper effects but the master of shlock was cheap cheap cheap and taught Ron to make the most of what he had. The list of those who were trained by Corman cheapo films is astonishing... from Martin Scorcese to Jack Nicholson.
I think they got the idea for the GTA games, not from this '77 movie 'Grand Theft Auto' (perhaps some of it, and the title for sure), but from the '74 movie 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot' with C. Eastwood and J.Bridges. It's like watching GTA the 70's movie
the whole sequence at 1:06:43-1:06:57 becomes HILARIOUS IN HINDSIGHT when you consider who became US President in 2017. Also, as pointed out elsewhere, the "laugh" the pilot lets out after being fired by Bigby was copied on THE SIMPSONS.
I never saw this movies as I was 15 when it came out, too young to drive myself to the drive-in movie theater. If my older brothers saw it, they would have been on a date and wouldn't want their younger brother hanging around.
the old man on the bus "piss of pig"..lmao 1:05:00 frank bonner (herb tarlik) from wkrp..the hp rating for the rolls royce.. rolls royce said it was sufficient ,no #'s.....

1:14:04 It’s sad the Rolls got destroyed , although it can always be replaced for something nicer ; But the Ice cream truck , That’s a different story all those ice cream sandwiches going to waste 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Those real actors
I have been having so much fun going through these old car movies and this one did not disappoint!!!
Ron Howard’s career as one of cinema’s most commercially successful and acclaimed directors began with this car crash comedy executive produced by Roger Coreman, the king of B movies.
Eat My Dust was good
🤣👍
Battle Beyond the Stars was actually not as bad as I thought it would be
What a fantastic 70's classic!
Also it was shocking that a Grand Theft Auto movie released *20 years* before the first GTA game
if anything the game was probably inspired by the film (along with the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds")
@@Tsotha Possibly
Also, Bully 2001 movie released 5 years before Bully (Canis Canim Edit).
70s movies are so great. The music is lighter and the scenes are delightful not to mention clean dialoug
Cindy A 70s films had profanity alot of the time.
They had big gas tanks back in the 70s
@@kimiisungstartedthekoreanw2771 Ever watch The Last Detail?
Thank you for uploading this gem, first time I have seen it. How could I have missed this one for so many years?
I love these movies from the 70's
I love this film, will never get bored of it.got it on dvd!!
One day I hope to be able to say "Get out of my mansion."
If I remember correctly, I first saw this film in the summer of 1978 as a CBS Friday night late movie. One long car chase with lots of crashes. Perfect for a 13 year old to stay up late and watch during summer vacation.
Bugbee.......I turned 14 mid 78 and I had to smile at your comment, I can totally relate. Great times :)
that sounds awesome.
I was eight years old I’m so glad to be a child of the 70s
thank you for finding us all the good movies.
I saw this at the drive-in with my mother, who loved it, even though she hated just about everything I liked.
I loved this movie when it first came out and still find it very entertaining. At least that pretty blue Seville was saved, but the Rolls Silver Shadow carnage was hard to stomach.
JRobert111111 I thought the roller was going to be spared.
Dont worry, the Silver Shadow you see get destroyed is a replica. The real one stays unharmed somewhere in a garage to this day.
Great film, thanks for putting it on You tube.
Totally Awesome . . . forgot how funny and action packed this movie was . . .Thks . .
I think this reminds me of GTA 5 of all the franchise. Also, the radio jockey is 😢 radio jockey from the original Deathrace with Stallone!
Oh, this isssss definitely best movie about GTA games.
This movie is so dumb, I am loving every minute of it!
so silly , like the old Cannonball movies

I learned of this movie in Ron & Clint Howard's book "The Boys". Glad I did; this is great!

Sure wish they made movies like this now...
Instead we are stuck with Fast and the Furious
@Silent Hill Fan yeah, thank goodness for UA-cam 👍
Boring and outdated?

Thanks!❤
01:40 "Get out of my mansion !" 🤣
While this movie "Grand Theft Auto" isn't exactly what we think it is, it at least still DOES involve hijacking cars
I watched this so so long ago and I couldn’t help but remember a lot of the scenes in this movie. It was old for my time, but it was a fun watch even as a kid.
Chose Ron Howard for my film class and this was one of the movies I decided to watch. Can't lie this movie is pretty good.
Love these old movies, darn good arm to throw dynamite that far of a speeding car
My thought exactly :D
Ron Howard was so popular for a number of shows but when I saw Marion Cunningham and I could not help but to think of him as Richie Cunningham.
Richie Cunningham playing outside of his good boy role. awesome 1st directed movie he did.
Before the games they had this.
LONG before
This mean, ....
That GTA is not actually R* games propriety
@@Notantoher450 no, it means the trademark for the name is not fully owned by Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto is just a general law term for a car hijacking in USA

Haha, they’re not related. Completely separate things.
This was a awesome movie 🎬 more people should watch this
This hasn't been on TV for decades. I never forgot about it though, with Nancy Morgan in it. She was a doll.
~ Great Memories from the Good Old 70's ~
🔥🔥🔥🔥Ron Howard is a pure genius. Excellent movie and soundtrack🔥🔥🔥
Not a bad director either.
Great movie, many thanks for posting.
rockstar games really loves this movie they make a game about it
Loved every minute
This is a great watch, thank you
I just love it. Stock western audio with bullet sounds when the cars r blowing up lol
The first 10 mins of this movie plays like many a classic 80s movie !
Ron Howard's directorial debut..........
All time favorite movie...when I was a kid I laughed till I cried when the ice cream got t-boned and the music “withered”
Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
So did I
You forget a thousand things everyday pal, make sure this is one of them.
Also loved . 1976 Eat My Dust, involving Ron Howard stealing Mable, a 68 Camaro.
Well the chases themselves were a bit below average, too much speed up footage especially, but those crashes were insane. The rest of the film is great comedy though, I'm glad I watched it, thanks for the upload!
Ron Howard is always Richie Cunningham. His acting never progressed beyond that.
Ron Howard first Directing gig thanks to Rodger Corman
And it made a lot of money
I believe it’s Ron’s best action film
Congratulations for this movie, it's amazing. 🇪🇸✌️👍
the talent of ron howard is there to see
"Get out of my mansion!" That was funny
John L get off my estate
How about, "Get out of my state!" Lol

Wow. Got the whole "family" in it. Brother Clint, Father Rance and "Mother" Marion Ross. :D

would be funny if rockstar made the next GTA set in los santos in the 70s and had a character based on Ron Howard
That could actually be pretty funny.
Except that wouldn't be likely due to legal entanglements between Take-Two and the film's producer.
Im not working with rockstar, but I have a fanmade soundtrack on Spotify and even made my own characters. Looked up lore and history on the universe.
