The W.Gr21 is not intended to destroy bombers directly, that is not how they were used. To understand how they were used correctly I must take you on a short historical journey. Note that if you want a primary source reference try Seyfert (Luftwaffe vet with Reich defence in a squadron which used them). I also had some family that were involved but that's a little harder to use as a reference or any kind of confirmed source since that's like childhood conversations with grandma's friends at Christmas gatherings and none of them are around anymore. Growing old can be lonely, but that's why I like channels like these.
So to reminisce, the Wuerfgranate 21cm was a naval mortar designed to damage enemy U-boats with bracket fire, which remember the vast bulk of WW2 submarines were never true submarines and extremely vulnerable to catastrophic damage when submerged. It thus has a big, hefty charge and nothing approaching a great deal of accuracy. Its closest modern weaponry comparison would be the ASW rockets used on Soviet/Russian surface units. It was adapted for use by the German Army, who also employed a smaller and probably more effective 18cm version and these were mounted in rocket batteries aboard trucks and half tracks, oh and trailer carriages too. One thing the Army did like about the 21cm in particular, despite its inaccuracy was that hefty charge, it could destroy enemy light armour and regular transports with only near hits, leaving a sizeable crater and creating such blast force it disabled or destroyed several nearby vehicles and killed infantry by shockwave alone. Which brings us to how it was used against bombers.
According to Seyfert they were only fitted to the squadron leader's ride as they were very difficult to use effectively and required experienced marksmen, everybody else in the squadron carried extra 2cm MG151 in gondolas, of course discussing Messers here. FW Antons actually used the same layout in practice, outer wing guns were often left without magazines to improve handling in normal combat and only armed for ground attack or bomber intercept missions, and removed if stores were fitted under the wings.
The leader would fire his 21cm rockets into a bomber box hoping to time the explosion to occur relatively close to any of the aircraft in the formation, the result was a shockwave devastating enough to force one or more of the bombers out of the box, where it immediately became vulnerable without the protection of mutual coverage and it was pounced upon by the other squadron members using their 2cm batteries until it was brought down.
The W.Gr21 wasn't used to destroy bombers, it was used to force them out of the deadly coverage of .50 cal massed fire within the bomber box formation so regular interceptors could attack it without being a suicidal mission.
Edit a post script: it was also used in ground attack missions for obvious reasons, although was hopelessly inaccurate and often ineffective in an aerial mounting, but that's the reason for the contact fuse in addition to a timed one. If you did manage to hit something it would leave a crater where pretty much anything at all had previously been, or largely destroy most things that are even simply close by. If you aimed at a road convoy however, chances are you'll kill some villagers in a nearby forest a little ways away.

Are you guys sure the rockets are meant to impact with the bomber? I always thought it was a proximity/timed fuse and they fired them into bomber formations and the frag would cause the damage not the direct hit??

      @trolleriffic 2 роки тому +2

The Germans didn't have a working proximity fuse in WW2 so they relied on a time fuse with the BR 21. There might have also been an impact fuse as a backup but they were supposed to burst near the targets rather than hit them.

Lmao this reminds me of when you tried shooting down the Mig 15 (17 irl) with the A-4’s rockets but was just getting frustrated the entire time in classic supercap fashion

Replicability is the name of the game: come in at the same angle, same speed & distance from target & drop 2-3 times. Adjust accordingly.

Those AB things were very potent in Il-2... dropped those head on against bomber formations, what a nasty surprise that was :D
Also, do a low pass, but pull up 90° right above the target and drop before stalling out. Another technique would be a flat toss.
But TBH I'm really waiting for the F and G models, especially with the PB II rockets.

Thanks for the update CAP. Your German language skills improves. 😁
The huge rockets against bomber groups works quiet well. No need to directly hit a plane. Just aim from distance and time the 💥 correctly.

The Rockets are a kind of poor mans flak. Drop them into a bomber formation and hope for a hit. The distract the Gunners and should loose the tight formation a moment before the real attack with guns.

Don’t worry. It’s not a proper DCS experience if you don’t miss a thousand times.

Set the gun sights to the corresponding distance it takes for the rockets to explode. The explosive radius should provide for some leeway. In other words, you were too close to make use of the fact that it goes boom.

A few things about the bombs and rockets. The Werfergranate was used with a timed fuse at a range of 1000m against dense bomber formations, just launch it somewhere in their formation and the large warhead will damage them.
About the bombs. SC meand Sprengbombe cylindrisch, a high explosive cylindrical bomb. The number refers to the weight of the bomb, the type to the the mechanical strenth of the body, type 1 the most robust used against hard targets, type 3 the weakest, L2 means nose made of forged steele, body tube steele. SD are Sprengbombe, dickwandig. Thick walled explosive bombs, less explosive mass but more and bigger fragments. SD250 Stg means Stahlguss, or cast steele. Not sure if the SC250 type1 and type3 perform different in DCS.
