If you were ever lucky to own this rare album, then you know after hearing Lonette McKee, just how special she is. I'm thankful to be able to hear her here. It breaks my heart to have know about this remarkable talent for 30 years and to have lost the only album she ever released.
I remember about 1984, I was rummaging thru my parent's record collection and stumbled upon this album. Some kids spent Saturday mornings watching cartoons, in our house, not me. Chores at 6a and the soundtrack of R&B albums all day. Once chores were done, I spent my afternoons reading the lyrics and credits on album jackets. I loved doing that... #containsinterpolationsof
This song brings back great memories. My favorite album during my time at Howard U. Anybody else out there miss the ORIGINAL Quiet Storm with Melvin Lindsey?
I was fortunate enough to get this when it was released (I was a kid) This whole album is great! Excellent writing/production etc. They used to play this cut on KJLH(Stevie Wonder's radio station)
I remember this cut from college. Whoa...talk about bringing back memories. Lonette McKee was terribly underrated as both an actress and a singer during her prime. I saw her recently in a film staring Common, on Netflix. Can't remember its name, but Ms. McKee played Common's mother. She's still amazing.
July 22nd: Happy birthday Actress-Singer-songwriter / film scores Lonette McKee. "Sparkle" "Jungle Fever" "The Cotton Club" "Honey." Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the upload, BronzeVenus. Blessings
Purchased this on vinyl back 1979 in a record store directly across the street from LACC. Still one of most alluring album covers ever, and thank goodness for little Ms. Rushen.
It is great to see how people who believe in what they like reach goals and make their mark on the music and acting world. Lonette started early bringing her dreams to realities.
I stumbled across this remarkable artist while purhcasing Brenda Russell's debut album in Georgetown. I found her lyrics and vocals to be insightful and sultry. Then, i recognized her from her role as Sister in "Sparkle." (I would also like her other recordings). Thanks for posting!
My Uncle (who's 1 year older) had this album back in the day. I had just been listening to Patti Austin (Havana Candy) and thought of Lonnette McKee. Couldn't remember the song title but this one I remember. I think one of her best acting performances was as Kerry Washington's mother in the movie "Lift". Thanks for posting this.t
Bless you. I first heard this song in 1979 from the " Words and Music " album that belonged to my brother. Hearing it brings back so many memories . Again, thank you and bless you for uploading the music that I haven't heard in so long :-)
Notice how Ms. McKee sounds like there are two vocalists on this track? She goes high in spots and drops down low and warm quickly and makes it appear there's another vocalist. Great technique. Lonette is first class. An album of Billie Holiday tunes would be wonderful from a vocalist like Lonette.
I actually saw her in "Which Way Is Up?" before I saw her in "Sparkle". This was released within a year of her role in "Which Way Is Up?" I'll never understand why she didn't blow up the Hollywood scene and recording industry
This is nice, don't know why I had to go to wickepedia to even hear about what she is doing. I didn't know she could sing so well. gald to see she is still hangging in there. have always like her.
WOW...Lonette had a WONDERFUL voice...different for that time period...she should have been FAR more popular and successful musically than she was....she puts me in the mind of Angela Bofill a little.
Man I'm sitting here watching an old episode of Soul train on "Centric" and She's on there performing a song called "Save It" and I thinking, I'vbe seen her before. Then in the stage interview she says she's up for a movie called Sparkle. it clicked with me then, cause I fell in love with her as a kid when she was Rhich's other woman in "Which way is Up". So now I'll be on here obsessing for more Lanette footage. LOL!
incredibly beautiful tone- velvety and creamy, nice bluesy undertone, dark chest voice, coloratura head voice, and a great capability to phrase and express via music
People go on and on and on about how pretty women like Haile Berry, Mariah Carey, Lisa Bonet, Dorothy Daindridge, Vanity, Alicia Keys, are just because they are of mixed race and they may have the best of both worlds going for them but all of them put together could never compare with how gorgeous she is. Personally I think that the only reason why everyone including those women along with the mass media never even mention her name is because they're ALL just jelous ...
was watching this movie with her and richard pryor on centric last night called "which way is up". cant stop laughing at the part where she whooped his ass in the park lmfao! i didnt know she was a singer to. she is damn good.
A unique personality. I didn't know she was considered black or was black when I heard her singing this song that I instantly fall in love with. I later read she was considered high yellow in the black community. A very romantic decade.
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. Lonette was gorgeous as well!

Yes, knew him from high school and we all supported the Quiet Storm, home grown DC sound. Thanx for that memory.

Great actress, songwriter, theatre favorite, and singer, among many of her talents but smart is obvious.
I actually saw her in "Which Way Is Up?" before I saw her in "Sparkle". This was released within a year of her role in "Which Way Is Up?" I'll never understand why she didn't blow up the Hollywood scene and recording industry
Beauty and class no other.

Nope.
There is a hint of Angela Bofill.
Beautiful voice, the girl can sang not sing sang.

She and Phyllis Hyman has the same pitch
+kim peay I strongly agree with you. I was thinking the same. Both women are/were incredible singers, who could sing just about anything.
Nope.
