    Celia Imrie received the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for her performance in this. She deserved every inch of it. She's spectacular!

      I don't understand why she's considered a supporting actress in this. I mean, she has much more stage time than Julie Walters, who's considered the lead. It doesn't make sense to me. Imo, Celia carried this amazing musical.

    I was blessed to see this twice at the Haymarket - once with Julie Walters as Mrs O and then later with Victoria Wood playing her own creation. The atmosphere in the theatre was electric. I laughed so much I missed some of the details. The DvD (and this post) let me revisit every nuance, and enjoy moments I missed 17 years (17 years??!!!!) ago (feels like yesterday). Victoria Wood’s Mrs O was a different creature to Julie Walters Mrs O, it was like being in a parallel universe, a very special performance.

    I cannot get enough of this!!!
    I discovered Acorn Antiques in the TV show and subsequently was HOOKED on Victoria Wood. Her shows, her stand up, etc.
    This musical lives in my heart and I quote it almost daily; bugger my American friends who don't know what a Macaroon is

    Truly brilliant. Subverting every musical theatre genre and style from fosse, alw, sondhiem to Cole porter with a dash of le Mis

    It’s brilliant , I’ve seen it many times on DVD. The combination of this cast and Victoria Wood is outstanding. Comedy lost one of the greats when she passed away.

    Thank you Lex de Groot. I've been a Victoria Wood fan since the 70s. Now she's gone, I am rationing myself to unseen bits on special occasions. I saved this for Christmas Eve 2021. It's probably the best thing I've ever seen on You Tube. There's a month's worth of entertainment in this clip alone. I'll be claiming some of those lines throughout 2022 and beyond. "I'm not over the hill" ... "no, but you're near enough to the top to get a good view".

      I’m not british and moreover too young to have seen AA on the telly and to feel the nostalgia you probably feel, but still I think Sally Ann did a good job. She’s very talented in my opinion.

    • @xColmGx
      @xColmGx 3 роки тому +4

      Lex de Groot she did an excellent job! She certainly put her spin on the role as she should, and while VW was fab in the original I think Sally Ann is ideal for the musical theatre version of the character.

    Where did they get that unfinished cinder block wall along the back of the stage in the opening scene? Can't tell if it's a really well done flat or the actual wall but it looks EXACTLY like the same soul-destroying product I've seen in multiple university campuses here in the Midwestern US.

      Just open your eyes and read the notes. They told you in the original posting, " It was directed by Trevor Nunn, and opened at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in February 2005 for a three-month sell-out run."......

      The musical won the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical and was nominated as Best New Musical. It starred Oscar-winning actress Julie Walters, alongside a top-class cast of some of the best British comedy actors. Directed by Trevor Nunn (ex Artistic Director for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, and director of Les Miserable, CATS, Starlight Express amongst other hit shows) and was written by Comedy Legend Victoria Wood. ALL THAT SAID, although it is enjoyable, it did get mixed reviews. however that didn't deter audiences, and it enjoyed sell-out performances, as well as millions of DVD Sales when it was sold a recorded DVD version

      You clearly don’t understand the cult following AA has. It was so hard to get tickets for this but I was lucky to get into the Haymarket and see this joyous show. It was never planned to be a long runner, it could have sold more than it run easily but that was never the plan hence the DVD. Next time you want to make a comment like this please understand that not all theatre is extended west end runs, some of the best stuff on stage is repertory, limited run and seasonal.

      @@cj4631 I paid £60 to sit in the Gods and I mean amongst the roof trusses on a padded concrete bench. One of the most expensive tickets in the West End at the time (no wonder with the cast and short run). I've never seen so many gay men inside a Theatre in my life! Great show though!

    Josie Lawrences' character is so forced, over the top and caricature - even for the farce that is Acorn Antiques - she stands out in a bad way. How the hell Victoria Wood didn't say anything about her excruciting performance is anyones guess.

    • @LilyBeat_
      @LilyBeat_ 5 місяців тому

      Completely disagree. I adored her performance, plus Victoria Wood clearly did too, she was famous for speaking up when she didn’t like how someone delivered her work, she would have told Josie even if it was the way she delivered a single line, Josie would have known.
