How beautiful, natural and unaffected was Victoria, in this interview. I get the impression that she never believed just how talented she was. A very humbling interview which Dawn presented very well. Both ladies were firm favourites of mine in the 80's ~ Dawn and Jennifer broke the mould as a female double act in comedy and Victoria was unique with her single handed comedy writing, and brilliant songs at the piano. Her pairing with Julie Walters was undoubtedly where her writing went up a notch. So sad Victoria is no longer with us. I feel that her career would have carried on for as long as she wanted it to. She will always be missed ~ there has been no one like her since.

This is the best interview she ever did, I've never seen her so relaxed. I'm reading Jasper Rees's wonderful biography and this was highlighted as one of the only interviews where she was her unguarded self, due to Dawn's warmth and their genuine friendship.

Dawn French, knowing how private Victoria was, called her up afterwards to make doubly sure that she was happy with the interview and gave her the option to remove anything she wanted. Dawn feared that Victoria would feel afterwards that she'd revealed too much.

    • @zeddeka

It's a very good book, which I'm not sure she comes out of looking as nice as people imagine she was. It records her saying about her fans "Oh god. They think I'm like the woman on TV", parts of her Southbank show had to be cut out because she was recorded being unpleasant about some fans, and she also said she didn't want to perform "in theatres full of gay men." Also interesting was how so many of her co-stars testified to how difficult and sometimes unpleasant she could be. Dawn French describes how tough working on the Comic Relief sketch with Victoria was, and the story Dawn tells of Victoria visiting Dawn in Cornwall and being a sulky nightmare. Celia Imre said she often felt bullied by Victoria and Julie Walters said she'd never been to Victoria's house in years and perhaps most tellingly: "“It would be hard to be weak with her, very hard. Early on it was a very immature jokey relationship, so there was no place for that. But generally to be weak with her was not a good idea. Because she would possibly use it.”

Two beautiful funny women. Victoria isnt in any category, she is unique and stands alone in her comedy. I love comedians who observe and tell stories,as opposed to punch line jokes. Brilliant .

I agree--that's what life is--an accumulation of stories; some sad, some happy, some tragic, and some funny. Life isn't just a string of punchlines and doom. Victoria's motivation was to tell stories, and to tell them as genuinely and realistically as possible, sometimes surrealistically. She was fab.

Victoria Wood was one of the funniest British comedians ever, with an effortless gift for words that Ronnie Barker might have envied, let alone her wonderfully hilarious and original songs. Left us way too soon. I introduced my thirty-something partner to her stand-up routines on UA-cam a few weeks ago and she was totally floored. Watching the Melbourne Comedy Festival last night showed just what a gulf there is between run-of-the-mill comedians and the real artists, like VW. Not that there is anyone like her. Truly a one-off.

I think that being a comedian is a gift. To be able to make people laugh is lifting the audience to a place that takes them out of the problems that they face on a day to day life. It can save people’s sanity and laughter releases endorphins and can make an enormous difference when one feels down. I’m in awe when I listen or watch comedians , I’m just amazed at how they remember all the jokes and the timing that’s necessary to carry it forward. I would be very proud of myself to do something that’s so wonderful. Laughter is what makes the world a happy place. Xx 😘

Remembering some of the memorable sketches she wrote are beginning to make sense now, especially "swim the channel". Her describing her childhood as being largely left alone by her parents means you can kind of see the genesis of that one. A very dark sketch in a way but very funny

Very revealing in its own way - I don't buy the bit about women being too old to do things... she was a complex person and so so talented.

She speaks rather differently here to the hammed-up, mumsy northernness she is known for. She seems to have an air of melancholy about her. It doesn't seem like she had a good childhood or that she didn't get on with her mother.

Read the new biography by Jaspar Rees. Very powerful and brings out what you have picked up on. This woman was such a ground breaking writer and actor and stand up comedienne.
