  • In this video I'll go over the cut and fold mod that is very common on the rear quarter panel on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. We'll list the reasons for doing so, and exactly where and how to make the cuts and fold it in.

    Lol the only reason I did a "comp cut" on my xj was because I live in the northern rust belt and didn't have any lower quarters left😀

      how did you do it with the rust? i have one side of my jeep completely rusted out and the other side doesn’t have a spec of rust. i just did one side tonight and plan to do it in the morning but not sure what i want to do yet. Might cap it with some plate or something

      My xj was was state vehicle before i paid 600$ at an auction for it and i swear to you i don’t have a single spec of rust from it being southern owned and the interior is so clean and perfect that it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line

    I was really getting kinda frustrated because I have a 2000 xj that I bought site unseen and the fact that it has a lot of bad rust spots was covered up fairly well...smh. I was looking on UA-cam to see about replacing the quaters but then I came across this and it is a great idea. I'll make it for off road capable and save a lot of time money and aggravation so thanks for this buddy.

    Thanks! That was pretty straight forward. From working with sheet metal a lot in my life I have found it to my advantage when bending metal in a straight line is to take an utility knife and score a line on the inside of the metal for example that crease at 9:30 you can go on the inside of that crease line and score a line over and over again with an utility knife, blades are cheap. Don't do it too much as the metal might crack on our scoreline. It works. Be careful not to cut your fingers off though...I still have all ten digits...

    might want to paint the edges you cut before folding them over otherwise you are putting together raw steel edges that are going to grow cancer inside the hard work you just went through to make. cold galvanizing paint works well for this and plays nice withe the galvanizing the factory uses under the paint.

    Hey Matt I just removed the rear covers on my 2001 XJ and I will have to do some cutting, much more than you did the rust has formed right at the wheel well and maybe 2 inches into the panel but I can still cut it and fold but will add some sheet metal to close the underside thanks for the how to video keep the videos coming dude ..

    if you heat lightly the creases with the tip of a hot torch (anneal), the metal will bend easier you can use stock bar as a heat sink along the crease where you don't want too much heat to travel.

    This is exactly what I will be doing to my 98 xj classic in just a few weeks. Don’t you worry about all that bare metal turning in a pocket of rust. If you have all that open after making the cuts do you think I should clean it all up and spray something like a galvanized primer on it before bending it up

    • @bleepinjeep

      Cut off wheel is so much cleaner and smoother on thin metal like this, and it's hard to mess up whereas a plasma can slip and there goes your perfect cut.

I would have loved a good instructional video

    Alright go easy on me my fellow XJ Brother's & Sisters,😕
    Say I want to trim my fenders, and do the comp cut as well on my 01 XJ,🤔
    Where should I start ?
    Do I do the comp cut first, or should I start with trimming the fenders ?
    Fyi Matt, I'm a long time subscriber, I dig your videos Both wrenching & wheeling, And I would like to say that you, and your family, are welcome out at my RC adventure courses anytime Brother.😁😎👍👍
    Thanks for sharing your video Matt 🙂👍
    Fyi I'm sitting in my barn with everything that I need to get started on trimming the XJ, everything except knowing where I should begin,😂😊👍👍

    • @R.C.A.D.
      @R.C.A.D. 4 роки тому

      Hmm 🤔 Are you not getting all of your Notifications either ?
      I know that it happens with my channel quite a bit,🙄
      Still kinda waiting for a response though,😕 😁
      Anyways, in the mean time I trimmed up the front fenders while I was waiting,
      Taped around the fender with blue painters tape, Cut the fenders via Cut off wheel, Ground & Shaped via Angle grinder and a hand file, then painted the entire inner fender, and the bottom of the windshield fluid container, "flat black"
      I removed the lower air dam on the front bumper, along with the bumper'ets, I was planning on cutting the bumper'ets down to match the fenders, but after removing them, I had discovered some unseen rust,🙄 the Bumpers lower mounting bolt holes for the bumper'ets, was actually rusted completely through,😕🤔 the new plan is to angle cut the corners of the front bumper, and roll with it,lol 😂 hopefully not any actual Roll overs, cause that would suck,😬😂 lol
      Anyways I'm going to trim the rear fenders tomorrow afternoon, along with doing the "Cut & Fold procedure" on the rear section of the body,🙄
      Personally, I would love to hear your input, on where the best place to start is ?
      Start with the cutting, and folding the rear quarter,
      Or Start with the Rear fenders, by Marking the spot welds, Cutting all the slits between the spot welds, and "Rubber mallet hammer folding"all the material into the wheel well,
      🤔😕 Or is it totally obvious after looking at it for a minute or two,🙄
      😄 I'll admit, that I haven't really just sat down and stared at for a few minutes yet,😂 I'm sure that I can probably figure it out on my own, but I figured that I would ask someone who had much more experience with XJ's,😕
      My XJ turned out to be pretty rusty under the rear bumper'ets, the back corners of the rear bumper aren't looking to hot either,🙄 so on that note; I'm unsure as to what the best outcome would be,🤔
      Wether I should cut the rear quarters right off, or wether I should attempt to cut and fold what little material is left,🤔 I mean the material is there, but it's very rusty, and really thin,😬 and it also already has a big hole, on the bottom of both sides of the Jeep, there's about 3/4's of the lower rear quarter that is possibly workable, but like I said it's very thin, and very rusty,🙄 so I'm on the fence with that issue,
      I suppose, I should probably try to clean up what's left of the material with a wire wheel or something, then Spray it with a Rust inhibiting paint, Then proceed with cutting and folding the quarters, Bolting the mess together with some self tappers, And then do whatever I can on the inside of the Jeep to get what's left over all sealed up,😕🤔 I don't know lol 😂
      Once again, I'm still waiting for some kind of response for first comment,😄
      No worry's either way, if I don't hear anything before I get started on everything tomorrow afternoon, Then I'll just figure it out myself,😕😁👍 Although some type of information on the best way of going about it would be appreciated, but it's not absolutely necessary,😕😁👍👍

    • @R.C.A.D.
      @R.C.A.D. 4 роки тому

      Never mind, I did it myself,
      all finished, I started by making a couple of initial cuts, on the lower inner Rear fender by the rear quarter, Then I did the cut & hammer folding technique on the Rear fenders themselves, And then I finished the Cut & fold on the rear quarter, except my last fold was pushing the "back lower inner fender" backwards over the other folds, then screwed it all together with some 12x3/4 self tapping screws, 👍
      The rear Quarter's were rusted pretty bad,🙄 but thankfully I had enough good material left to get the job accomplished,😊👍👍
      Fyi not to tell you what to do on your channel, 🙄 but if I could suggest, I would say that for all the xj fender trimming/ & comp cut videos that there is out there, none of them are very descriptive, Yours are generally pretty good, but having the vehicle shell on the bench, and flipping it whatever way you want, is much different than working on it while it's still a full roller sitting on the ground,🤔😕 basically that means that everyone that is watching the video, has to do a bunch of unneeded deciphering,🤔 that and you are basically in a unrestricted while working on it, No axles, No rusted on bumper, No gas tank, you Know what I'm saying,😕
      Here's my suggestion;
      Since no one really has a descriptive video on the entire process, from front, too back, including the rear quarter cut & fold,🤔 Maybe,possibly, you all could maybe,think about doing one,😕
      A extremely descriptive video, with good lighting, and close up views, close up's with the flash on, so we can actually see what we are looking at, a "no clown around video" a very descriptive, very in depth, and very professional video,
      Something like that, would be a great service to everyone current & future XJ owners,🤔 just saying!
      That is all; Happy Wheeling Brother.😎👍👍

    I need to figure out how to do the "pinch weld mod" on my '05 kj. I've got some other stuff done to it. Check out my channel if you're interested.

    am I the only one around here who prefers full fender profile and a rear bumper with wrap around guards?

      +balzarini51 I do to, on a mild wheeler. But when your going extreme and need as much ground clearance as possible, then this is the way to go!

      Im scared to say this on a jeep page, but I have a trail gear bumper on the back of my 95 Toyota 4Runner, and the wrap around tube has saved my quaters/"bedsides" more than a few times! Love the full body and big bumper look!

      +Keith Hof it would then be open to the inside of your jeep.

    Hey, I own a jeep where some dude cut the holy hell out of the rear quarter panel trying to trim them. Someone told me I'd need to weld it or find another rear quarter pannels off another jeep. Was just wondering how you cut the quarter pannels off
