Clara Bow was the first “It Girl.” She made the transition from silent movies to the “talkies.” Clara was hounded by the press like they hounded celebrities today. It greatly affected her mental health. The point of the song is that the “industry/society” elevates these young hopefuls in the search for the next “It Girl” that promises to be dazzling. Once they settle on one, they eventually begin to lose interest once the current “It Girl” starts aging, thus starting the search for the next “It Girl.” 1920’s Clara Bow. 1970’s Stevie Nicks. 2010-20’s Taylor Swift. The next “It Girl” will be….

This song really taps into the same feeling The lucky one and Nothing new carries . The being replaceable, always looking for the next "big thing" in the industry. Such a beautiful song

Great song and quietly scathing commentary on the entertainment industry. Props to Taylor for performing a mashup of Clara Bow and the Lucky One while Stevie Nicks was in the VIP tent in Dublin - along with You’re On Your Own Kid (Stevie’s fave TS song).

Its basically about how Taylor has been compared to other "IT" girls in the celebrity world and how people would tell her "you remind me of so and so and you look like so and so." That's why all the quotations. Basically being compared to another celebrity and the end when she mentions herself is basically passing the "batone" to someone else to the next "IT" girl for example Sabrina Carpenter is blonde and kinda looks like Taylor and she is becoming really popular.

They were all the "it" girls, big during their time. But Taylor has plenty of edge, she doesn't think she does apparently. Bow, like a ribbon bow, tie your shoes in a bow, bow, and arrow.

This is what music executives are saying to the new girl who they want to make a star and at the end they are telling a new girl they remind her of Taylor and they will be the next best thing

First they compare Stevie Nick's to Clara Bow. Then they compare Taylor to Stevie Nick's. Then they compare the next superstar to Taylor. They all have to look good and be dazzling.

The quotes are what people in the music industry said when she was younger and what she said herself at one point about dying if she made it. The bridge part that says Beauty is a beast…that is not in quotes - it is what she realised through the process. As I understand it the song is about the music industry making as if there can only be one superstar with the older musicians always being replaced by the newer ones. The last part about ‘You look like Taylor Swift, you’ve got edge she never did’ is probably in reference to Olivia Rodrigo, many people say she is the new superstar but is more edgy that Taylor. It’s basically a critique of how the music industry works. Taking these young impressionable artists, telling them they can be the next big thing, but not explaining the cost to them, and then when the music executives are tired of you they look for the next young thing to replace you.

You might enjoy listening to the group Fleetwood Mac where Stevie Nicks was the lead singer. She wrote a long message to Taylor, and gave her a crescent moon necklace like she wears - as an acknowledgment of Taylor’s belonging to the other musicians who are highly esteemed. Fleetwood Mac’s album called Rumors is iconic

Clara Bow ended her life in an insane asylum due to the pressure of her life and her love leaving her... See the fortnight video which calls back to this

Not true about Bow. She reportedly spent some time in an institution and reportedly may have made an attempt in the 40’s, but she lived until 1965 and died of natural causes. Though there is a theory that the phone booth at the end of the MV could be a reference to Sylvia Plath (the ultimate tortured poet) because she hiked to a phone booth to call her estranged husband before ending her life.
