I wonder if anyone remembers that Madonna tried to date him, as featured in her documentary "Truth or Dare". If I recall, he didnt even speak English at the time.
Antonio seems so grounded and intellectual. i could listen to this dude forever. the most honest and genuine converation and chemistry I've seen in one of these interviews.
I had no idea Antonio Banderas had suffered a heart attack, and I was finding it odd at how soft-spoken he sounded. In past interviews, his voice would resonate more. Its crazy to me because when was younger, his voice sounded like one of those sophisticated Spanish Casanova-types, and now he sounds like a man truly at peace with himself. You can really hear and feel the wisdom in his voice.
He kind of was always soft spoken in a way, there are plenty of soft spoken people whose voices are pretty resonant (Ralph Fiennes and Christopher Waltz for example).
Yeah, I agree. He always seems to have his guard up (understandably so) but here he seems very comfortable, maybe because he knows Antonio for a while (not sure if they were every in the recording studio together for the Shrek movies though).
Check out the Netflix interview of the cast from Dolemite is My Name. He's very relaxed and extremely humble in that when the rest of the cast keep praising him.
@@ginnywhat5777 Well that was Rudy Ray Moore's material. I grew up on his albums and films. He wasn't for everyone. My dad had all his albums and movies. So being an 80s baby, I used to watch and listen to all the old stuff.
These two are absolute legends, and seeing them converse about life and their industry was remarkably touching. Variety, you definitely hit this one out of the park. Awesome...
Puss and Donkey have finally reunited. That's nice. Also, it doesn't even seem like both have aged. They look like they're in their early 40s/late 30s.
I just watched "Desperado" again yesterday. He's always been a favorite. I like this format with actors interviewing another actor. And to have pairings of performers that have had such different types of careers is a great touch.
I met Antonio once, as a student reporter lol he finally noticed me after a couple of rejections with his bodyguard. He is really nice, what you see on camera is what you get.
So lucky. Antonio has been my favorite since I saw him as Armand in 1994. I was in undergrad and worked at Blockbuster so I had immediate access to all his Spanish films. Loved him ever since. Can't wait to watch the Oscar's tomorrow he deserves to win! Te Amo Antonio!
Casting Banderas as a bad guy, assasin or a psychopath was always a genious touch, as the way he speaks sounds gentle and sweet, and that can be so twisted when underneath he's some savage monster on the loose.
This was a home run interview between these two amazing amazing actors and gentlemen, I can understand if they both came out of this with something positive about each of themselves.
Short intro for people who only know Antonio Banderas from 'Shrek' and "Spy Kids": Start with "Desperado", the film that really made him famous in America. "The Mask of Zorro" "The Thirteenth Warrior" If you want to see Banderas carry a film by himself, in spite of the problems with scripts, etc., See: "Automata".
What an interesting conversation between two wonderful underappreciated actors. Antonio has finally received the praise and awards he deserves for his portrayal of Salvador in Pain and Glory. Eddie has come back from his long hiatus deeply introspective and garnering praise and awards for Dolomite. Thank you Variety.
I agree. I can't tell you how many times my family watched Eddy Murphy and Nick Nolte in "48 Hours" when I was a kid because it was one movie which my Dad never got tired of watching over and over on our VCR. I loved "Dolemite" and I would definitely watch it again. I am also interested in watching the documentary on Dolemite. Murphy did an amazing job and I also respect that he didn't touch the sexuality "issue" as it really is no one else's business anyhow. Moreover, It would have made it into a much more serious film than intended. The message was that if you believe in something or, in this case, yourself and work hard, you can make your dreams a reality. Rudy, like Eddie, just wanted to entertain and make people laugh. The other motivation for him was to prove that he was somebody (because his father did not believe he would amount to anything). That shows depth and human understanding, so whoever wrote that did a great job in my opinion. That guy was willing to go broke and bet everything on himself. He endured harsh criticism and rejection but also gained people's love and respect in the end. It was a beautiful portrayal.
I think it might surprise people how well versed in film making Eddie is and vice versa with Antonio. This pairing is deep with scene knowledge and technique
Thank you for this. I enjoyed it. These two actors need to be in another movie together. Not as voice overs for some animated character. But two actual characters playing a role that no one would have expected from them. Crossing my fingers and hoping it comes true. Again, this was great. They both look great.
I’m painting a galaxy while listening to this. Lowkey, zoned out and in my mind I’m picturing Puss in Boot and Donkey having a serious conversation, and then when I ran out of paint and snapped out of my imagination. I just noticed how much these guys were part of my childhood. Thank you😻 (btw I’m 22 and they still got me thinking about the Shrek series lol)
I’ve worked with both of these guys twice, then did a double take to see them in the same frame here. Had to watch this. They are both amazing personable guys.
c keesee, he only lived the end of the dictatorship. When Spain was in transition and opening for democracy. He is the son of a police officer so he was “safe”. Antonio even mention in another interview that once he was arrested with his friends while performing a theatre play by the police due to “political” content. But because his father was a police officer he and his friends got released and didn’t have to spend the night in jail. So I don’t think that he was traumatized by the regime.
After playing the role of James Early in "Dreamgirls", I wondered why Murphy didn't take on more serious roles/characters. He kept returning to silly sh-t like Norbit. Now I understand that he's uncomfortable tapping into his feelings or personal experiences that may be needed when playing a dramatic role.
True it’s interesting because they don’t know each other all that well and so we find out about things about them we wouldn’t normally hear. From two of the most naturally charismatic actors in Hollywood.
Hearing their thoughts about career, life and more is so nice. Haven’t enjoyed an Actors on Actors Segment like this since Viola’s and Tom H’s/Dev Patel & Octavia S.
two of my favorite actors, i thought Antonio was gonna ask all the questions. lol. Eddie don't like to do interviews but he seemed really comfortable in this setting.
Well, when it is with someone you know or you get to know someone, it is easier to interview that person and make them comfortable. Check out graham norton, he is a master class in getting actors and other people to loosen up and be comfortable on his talk show.

Me as well. We've known Eddie as a comedian all his life but to see this other artistic side of him is very refreshing! Its very funny to think otherwise. Its interesting how we sometimes see comedy separate from drama but we need to think of a ying&yang between both of them.
It's so hard for Eddie to open up, it takes Antonio Banderas to make him feel safe and still barely cracking the door to his feelings. I know after Dreamgirls it was a low blow but it's not Oscars matters it's the audience and people that count the most.I hope he knows that or have learned by now. I liked j I'm as a comedian but when I saw that movie and him as a crack addict producer , oh my, it's like I saw a completely different person that has this well of depth that was never opened for decades. For once he let himself completely go and IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, it was real acting artwork! He should really forget about the accolades, and do the real roles that give him joy and open him as an actor! Comedy is great but a lot of times it's a safe choice and you know safe doesn't cut I t for meaningful movies that last for decades. We only live once.)
So is Jason momoa with Peter dinklege. Which I think it would funny seeing momoa a pink loving funny guy and Peter a straight edge suit and tie type. Petered dead pan its so good and after seeing momoa on snl and interviews.. I think he can pull off comedy. I'd luce for Eddie to be involved with it too. I've been hoping he'd come back to comedy. I'm inclined to agree 👍
That was a riveting 25 minutes.. My admiration for both of them shot off into the stratosphere. Murphy referencing Alejandro Jodorowsky blew my mind.
