As a five year old my family took me to see star wars at the cinema in 1977, we all loved it. I took the family to see The Last Jedi in 2017, leaving the cinema I had to explain to the girls that Disney had defied expectation and ended their Trilogy early, and that starwars was finished. Gone.

My dad took my brother and me to see Empire in the theater when we were 3 and 5. Then when he was stuck in the hospital a few years ago, I got a little tablet with a built-in projector and good bluetooth speaker, and played a pirated copy of the 9th movie. I warned him that it was bad, and it made no sense, but at least it was better than laying in a hospital bed doing nothing. Slightly? Or maybe elder abuse. He might have thought he was senile when really it was the movie's fault for being incomprehensible.

Because of Disney, Star Wars has become one big sorry excuse for a movie. At the age of 9, I remember seeing Star Wars for the first time in June 1977. And it wasn’t just the movie experience that was profoundly unusual. My dad, my older half sister and I stood in line at the Cooper Theater on Colorado Boulevard in Denver and waited in line 2 hours to get tickets to see the movie. This line of people ran for blocks and we were near the front of the line. When we finally did get into the theater, there was a kid who wanted to stay for the next showing, but the theater usher told him he had to leave. There was nothing to compare Star Wars to when it came out, and that’s what Disney and Kathleen Kennedy don’t understand. Their movies are garbage. Garbage story and garbage characters do not make a good movie.

True, I'm reading a book at the minute written by a Hollywood executive and he writes in it that studios today want to appeal to the lowest common denominator. This is partly due to bigger budgets but also because it is considered safer, content that requires the audience to have a brain is thought of as risky, which is why you get dog shit like Kenobi, which is really just an insult to the fanbase's intelligence.

Back in 1987, I can remember being in our kitchen and hearing the Star Trek The Motion Picture music on the telly in the living room. I glanced in, and saw the first UK ad for The Next Generation. I wandered into the sitting room like someone under a spell, sat down on the sofa, and just watched the whole thing. Afterwards my wife said that she knew there was no point in trying to talk to me or get me to go back into the kitchen and finish whatever it was I was doing. When the show finally aired I recorded every single episode on VHS and rewatched them a hundred times, and my wife pretty much just sighed and left me to it. These days, I don't watch Star Trek. I don't watch Star Wars. I don't watch Doctor Who. I've recently discovered Stranger Things (after getting free Netflix with my TV package) and I'm hooked. But the entire first three seasons of Stranger Things that I've so far watched don't amount to a single season of original Trek, and as much as I like it, I don't love it; it doesn't mesmerise me the way a simple theme tune could more than thirty years ago. We have a long way to go to make back all the ground that we have lost.

The prequels, from all the hate they do get and somewhat deserve, did add hugely to the star wars fanbase. To name a couple: new lightsaber types (colour or blades, both were game changing), lightsaber duels taken to the next level, the soundtrack (especially duel of the fates), the new insight into lots of star wars lore that still influences the fan base, new characters that were amazing like Darth Maul or Mace Windu, and just overall how much material it gave fans to work with, and it produced many spinoff series such as the clone wars, which in turn produced even more beloved characters such as Ashoka or various droids. Say what you like about the acting, characters and story, the prequels still impacted the Star Wars fanbase hugely, in a positive way, adding so much to the lore and fuelling the Star Wars fanbase very well.

@@DespotofAntrim If you love a movie, I don’t really get how you can call it bad? Idk I might just not be able to understand where you’re coming from but filmmaking is an art form. There isn’t anything objective to it. It’s up to each individual if it resonates with them or not. You can’t measure the best amount of lighting that goes into the visuals to make it perfect or how long the exact appropriate amount of time before each frame or scene is before you should cut or what camera movement is best suited to what’s being depicted ect. There’s no golden rule that makes a film good and divides it from the bad. So many elements make up a film and everyone will value each to different degrees and will tell you something different about what they like or don’t like if you get them to think and break it down and with the story too, some people will like what’s being portrayed, some won’t. At least for me I could never love a film that I genuinely consider bad.
I first saw TPM as a kid and loved it. It’s definitely the Star Wars film I’m most nostalgic for. When I grew to internet exploring age I was quite shocked by the vitriol directed towards it and the rest of the Prequels and to fit in, because I was an idiotic kid back then, I conceded and went with it despite it not being what I thought. And I actually let it dictate my opinions I am ashamed to say. I considered it a bad film for literally 10 years from 2007 to 2017 without even watching it again because I actually only ever had it on VHS as a kid and never bought it on dvd. But then for TLJ I was really hyped for the new release and binged the entirety of canon that was out at that point. TPM was nowhere near as bad as I had forced myself to falsely remember. And it was at this point when I started to realise that at the time TFA was actually my least favourite Star Wars film which at the time I was saying was my 3rd favourite both to recency bias and conforming with the majority of the fan base. Now I consider TPM a solid film like a 6/10. Most of the films I’ve seen in my life are worse than it. To this day the introduction on the Trade federation ship, the pod race and the duel of the fates are still some of my favourite Star Wars moments. And Ik I said there’s nothing objective really when it comes to film, but the closest we can really get to repeatable, analysed empirical measurement regarding it’s quality are review scores (which I think we all know now aren’t to be trusted obviously and taken with a grain of salt ahaha) and in the case of TPM the critic scores are mixed and the fan scores hover around the 5.5/10 mark too. That’s better than the average and above what most films ever made get which is really impressive considering all the unnecessary hate directed towards it which means even if we were trying to talk objectively as best we can, it’s actually not a bad film and actually above average. But that’s only if we subscribe to the objectivity belief which I do not. I think it’s completely up to the person concerning what they like and don’t and how much it resonates with them determines if it’s a good film or bad film in their eyes imo

As a representing person of younger audience, I am 20 year's old, I will give my honest view on starwars franchise. I was born just after the prequel trilogy released and was too young to enjoy it, not to even mention the original trilogy. The only time when I actually enjoyed starwars content was jedi fallen order, a video game. Honestly the only fresh and interesting ideas I've seen in this universe that was created during my lifetime. My main issue with starwars, which is something I haven't heard a lot of people talking about, is that the worldbuilding is bland, boring and reheated like microwaved food. It's a vast galaxy which should be full of interesting places and lifeforms but all we get are death stars and desolate planets. I am so sick of seeing painfully boring and disgusting Tatooine which is apparently the most important planet in the universe, even though it's just one huge desert. I get it that this is where Luke's story begins and at first it is an interesting idea to see how societies might have developed on a desert planet. Although it is not even an original idea created by Lucas, since it was first done by Herbert's Dune. But for the love of Palpatine star wars is constantly going back to this dead pathetic planet that even the poster boy Luke hated. First in the original trilogy - return of the jedi, then in prequels - phantom menace, in the new trilogy twice, in boba fett, solo, rogue one, kenobi, and even in mandalorian. In the world only limited by human's creativity, the best that people who make starwars can come up is an another film/show on the desert. This is insufferable how overdone Tatooine is in the universe with such vast lore. I like how jedi fallen order delivers in the worldbuilding part. We get to see some old places with new twists to them: Kashyyyk, the swampy jungle planet with gigantic climbable tree. Learn and explore interesting things that have never been pictured before: Dathomir and the nightsister's witchcraft. And discover completely new or unknown places: Zeffo - a cold mountainous planet, Bogano: a flat cliff planet which is absolutely beautiful, Nur: water planet with underwater bases, and even go to Ilum where we get to gather a kyber crystal and make our own lightaber, how cool is that. That brings me to another part that for me is missing in star wars, which is a choreographic lightsaber combat. Most people care about the blasters and the troopers, don't care about the spaceships, for many starwars is mostly conflict between jedi and sith. For some reason disney is terrified to show us good exciting lightsaber combat, and I will not even consider the fights form the new trilogy. Lightsabers are plasma beams with no weight to them, except the handles, which should make them into agile and very deadly weapons that could easily go through flesh sever limbs. Meanwhile in the new trylogy they are swang as if they weighted as much as scottish claymores (5'9'' of pure steel), while causing as much damage as wet noodles. If I had to choose a cinematic starwars I enjoyed the most I'd go for prequels, not because they are amazing films, but because they perfectly deliver on that space knight/wizard fantasy most people crave. I would love to see more stories from old republic or the extended universe, unfortunately murdered by disney. In the modern world we young people expect something that makes us excited and unique. Starwars' most unique aspects are lightabers and the force. The constant struggle between following lawful jedi on the light side of the force by discipline and stoicism, or giving in to the chaotic sith on the dark side of the force but gaining a full expressive and emotional freedom to fulfilling all the desires is a perfect plot hook that could made many fantastic stories that just beg to be made into films. And morally considering if following a strict jedi code, which often is not about doing what's good, but what's 'right' or expected, is better than embracing sith one's self desires and having a freedom of choice of one's actions is much more relatable for a young viewer than any of woke crap that disney spat on us. @DespotofAntrim It is a lengthy comment but I put my mind and heart into it so I would appreciate if you red it fully and maybe considered spreading it further.
    Edit:
Also I hate Tatooine because I don't like sand. It's coarse, and rough, and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I agree that the potential of Star Wars was traded in for the cheap and diminishing nostalgia hits of the DST, and the junk grade TV shows. Tatooine has become a microcosm of the franchise, a boring, stale place where nothing of note happens. Disney would never consider anything like what you have described because they like every element of their investments to be IP with track records of proven success, minus of course the woke trash no one asked for. Many Star Wars fans have praised Andor but I think it was rubbish, I will do a video on why I think that is at some point. Thanks for watching the video and sharing your thoughts with me.

I loved the heart and soul that was put into those sci fi works in the 60's, 70's and 80's, the style of cinematography used, shot composition, camera angles, style of writing, and the special effects which pushed the technology of the time to its limit, the ingenious use of early CGI, practical effects, models, animatronics, puppets - fantastic stuff.
Star Wars sounded right up my alley. Then I saw the movies on TV for the very first time in the early 2000's around Easter, and I was ENCHANTED. I have been the biggest fan of it for the past 16 odd years... until The Last Jedi.
The magic just withered. I placed my love for it in a metaphorical box, set it aside on a shelf in the depths of my mind, and didn't look back.
One day, I shall love it again when I feel that it's safe from soulless, evil monsters.

Disney: Soon Star Wars will be strong again, united as one clan under one banner. Mine.
Kreia: Ah yes, the new Trilogy - after the last one was ended by fans and audiences. Such a defeat was merciful, an echo of the end, when your movies were in flames, crushed in the grip of TROS. But I do not need to remind you of such things.
Disney: I was at The Rise of Skywalker! And I remember how many EU stories died to stop us there! And no matter how many dead Force Awaken setups orbit the surface of people's minds, the Sequels still live. Star Wars still lives. See Boba there - he was Mandalore in the EU. Obi-Wan was just hiding out in the desert for 19 years. I brought them here, gave them a purpose. This galaxy will be ours again. I promise you. That is the future.
Kreia: Indeed? The future is always in motion, it is a difficult thing to see. Perhaps there will be no new age, Disney, no great Trilogy to unite fans. Perhaps your people fought their last battle when you bought Star Wars, and you have been dying ever since, a quiet death that will last years. And perhaps all that remains will be what I see before me: a property, wounded by Greed, encased as a Disney+ exclusive, haunted by the thought of being the last Star Wars content.

One metric I think is most important is the franchise popularity with children. As much as many fans hate to admit it the target demographic of Lucas StarWars was children and young adults. Lucas even points this out directly in multiple interviews and the emphasis on toys and video games backs this up.
I often ask kids if they like StarWars and aside from the Mandalorian and baby Yoda the silence is deafening. Not once have I heard kids say Rey is their favorite character or ask their parents to watch TROS.
On the other hand Stranger Things is popular with kids who in my opinion are too young to be watching it.
That can give a franchise legs like no other tactic. It’s why 40-50 year olds still love trilogy of films intended for children and the prequel trilogy is still wildly popular with people in their 20s. Even you, who I can guess is not a huge prequel fan, actually praised the trilogy more than the Original Trilogy.

This was a very good video. Personally not watched stranger things but comparing Star Wars to other intellectual properties I know off one relatively new and one as old if not older you can see the same contrast. Mobile Suit Gundam is literally Japanese Star Wars, with massive mobile suits built all over Japan. It has a huge legacy audience, massive popularity and even global appeal (like Star Wars did). However why Gundam still thrives and Star Wars plummets into ever increasing toxicity and disgrace is because Gundam holds up its legacy with admiration and respect for its iconic characters. Same goes for many other properties outside of the Hollywood sphere of influence.
As a franchise I can actually place next to Star Wars in terms of its drop off and dwindling fan base is Halo. Once the biggest gaming Juggernaut - now a failing brand with a terrible image, more a mockery of itself. It all stemmed from its own Last Jedi moment (Halo 5) and its own sequel trilogy (reclaimer saga) that attempted to sell out the fans for the broader audience. Even when they had hit a limited success (Halo Wars 2 return of a classic art style similar to Mandalorian and its Baby Yoda and Luke's Return) it quickly pittered out with terrible follow ups with the disastrous launch of Halo Infinite and the... Halo TV series (the same as Obi Wan and Book of Boba Fett).
And absurd as it is they both (Halo and Star Wars) also had a disastrous run of fails over a period of ten years if not a few more.
I genuinely believe that a franchise that ends up with a Last Jedi moment might truly be fated to die. How dose one recover from such a fall. And if they do hit a Last Jedi moment, catch gold only to drop it again... well its all over.

They really shit the bed so hard with the sequel trilogy. I could write paragraphs just reiterating everything you said, and then some, but the main reason why; what a great main cast they had. I really was excited about Rey, and seeing that world from her perspective. I believed her as that character. She fits. They blew it. Fin…how do you ruin such a potentially fantastic story line? And the dynamic between he and Rey. The sexual tension. And Poe…perfect role for Oscar and basically the new Han Solo without being a carbon copy. They could have set those 3 up for an AMAZING trilogy. I actually liked Adam Driver as Kylo. He was really the only thing to me that ended up being worth a damn in that whole trilogy, even though he was written horribly, as well. And these fucks had ALL 3 of the original actors STILL ALIVE, and didn’t put them all in one scene together. How…fucking…dare you. And god forbid you have a world with endless amounts of extended universe to find a new villain…you bring back fucking Palpatine. They destroyed the greatest IP in cinema history in my opinion. I never thought I’d long to watch the prequels again and again. So sad that wrong can never be righted. Carrie Fisher having passed and then murdering Han(though I understand he only signed on for the one movie anyhow). I didn’t expect to type this much, haha. Something I’ve loved my entire life man, and they just spit on it as if it didn’t set the bar for how movies are made for the next 40-50 years. Brutal.

bro. I just discovered your channel w your other starwars video, and you really know how to write, narrate and dissect! you are spot on w your disney sw analysis. the incredible thing is, before disney bought sw, there were 100s of stories, comics, books, video games, fan fiction and more. starwars was still thriving and successful. well worth the investment by disney... except that they totally blew it. I was as diehard a sw fan as one could get. 20min into the last jedi and I was like wtf is this?? not only could I not recognize it as a starwars film, I loathed and hated the movie more than anything I had ever see before I was even an hour in. I was furious when I left the theater and after I had meditated on what was produced, I completely turned my back on this franchise. I mean, I don't even care about the originals anymore! the last jedi was such poison, that I lost my taste for everything starwars. having spent countless dollars on the franchise prior to disney's acquisition, especially on video games, my money would never go to this franchise again after that abomination of a film. disney ddnt just lose money from me going forward, they actively killed a super fan. starwars has been relegated to a series of films I watched as a child and nothing more. anyways, can't wait to check out more of your content! subbed.

@@DespotofAntrim I feel like maybe I know too much about Star Wars by proxy now that it really dulled the wonder I saw in it as a kid. Up til before the Disney stuff I legitimately thought George Lucas planned the films out from the beginning only to find out that the modern movies’ “plan it as you go” mindset was at play all along with the OT. And now that I know that it makes rewatching the old movies feel like constantly having it in mind that it had no real plan makes it noticeable. Like it’s amazing it still flows well enough but at parts like Leia and Luke being twins separated at birth… I just think “random?” Like it was just a really weird choice at ending the love triangle. That and Han was apparently supposed to have died with the carbonite scene and I like that he got brought back (I prefer happy endings) but it does feel like walking back a bold choice for a safe one (though again, it wasn’t a bad choice just definitely one that does seem like a JJ Abrams Rise of Skywalker undo-button on the previous film part).

The problem is that all the other Disney productions were just schlocky bits rushed out by a mindless corporate need to fill movie and TV time slots, and so were poorly written and poory cast bits of junk designed as "fan service", not great stories or movies. Andor was created by a veteran of the film industry, Jack Gilroy, who really knows how to put a great story together.

My relationship with star wars is strange. The Original Trilogy was before my time, and the prequels were meant for my generation.
I saw the first prequel film as a very young child, and was enamored by the dazzling effects and creatures, and was especially in love with the design of the Naboo starfighter. To this day it's still my favorite ship design in the franchise, and im crushed it did not feature in the Clone Wars cartoon in any way- but im getting ahead of myself.
By the time Attack of the clones released, i was more able to understand the story it told, and i was repelled by it utterly. I did not accept anikan as the hero, was unimpressed by padme, and was constantly agitated that no one could see the obviously evil chancellor palpatine for what he really was. Even my child self could tell he and Sidious were one and the same by the end of phantom menace. The cold, unnatural way the characters behaved around one another confused and unnerved me. However what kept me in was the appeal of the jedi themselves. The contrast of the spiritual, and majestic culture of the jedi set against the advanced technology of the space setting- yet one that was undeniably fantasy in design.
Despite my problems with the story and characters i found the setting irresistable, and wanted to see more of it.
However, My family never bothered to go see Revenge of the Sith, so evidently my mother and father were not enthused.
I didn't see star wars till the first time until i was already an adult. A jaded art student. Apparently the only worse period in my life to see it would have been as a teenager, because i was completely ambivalent to it. all i saw was the hokey sets, the wodden performances, and the bastarding flat wide shots. The magic of the Jedi was all but absent, as well as the amazing and beautiful landscapes and fantastic locations. and in thier place was cold industrial sets and a world war 2 allegory wearing a gritty, analog sci fi aesthetic. The very things people love about the original films was a complete turn off for me!
I was ready to wite off Star Wars as simply not being for me at that point, but was saved by Dave Filoni's Clone Wars series. Finally, I could have my magical space ninja wizards, and have them also be good characters. Not only that, the war story was engaging and carefully plotted. Characters the prequel trilogy deemed disposable were key players in the cartoon, and became as beloved as the ones from the original trilogy!
It was after seeing the original 5 seasons that i finally sat down to watch empire, and the jump in quality from the original film was staggering. The cinematography was worlds better, the lighting hid the imperfections in the costuming better, the puppetry was amazing, and the story was immaculate. Though i had known for years that Darth Vader was Luke's father thanks to pop cultural osmosis, the scene in which he reveals this was no less captivating.
So there i was, an adult, poised to see the brand new sequel film, my only real nostalgia being for an spin-off cartoon that, by design, would have no bearing on the larger story told in the films, save for how it would superficially elevate the prequels.
And then we got a cynical, lazy, unimaginative remake of Star Wars. The grime was back, the puppets were back, even the stupid cameras were back (The miniatures were not back- they never left, despite what plinkett tells you), but it was all such an obvious sham, a ploy to be as un-like the prequels as possible and pander to fans of the original trilogy, and being as unchallenging a story as possible to appeal to the masses.
i initially thought it to be a drab, but inoffensive movie with an obnoxiously over-powered protagonist, but destroying coroscant was the last straw. (yes i know they backpedaled and claimed that it wasnt supposed to be coroscant but fuck you they knew exactly what they were doing) I knew then that this new series was not for me, and wasn't going to entertain it any longer.
of course, i would see the last jedi, dragged to the theater by my unfortunate sister, fooled by the disney marketing machine's female empowerment angle, and it was a far worse film than Attack of the Clones. That movie *hates* star wars, and wants the viewer to as well. I have not seen Rise of Skywalker, and do not plan to. As far as im concerned, Star Wars is already dead to me.
Though I feel this way, I'm not unhappy. I'll always have "My" star wars. I've got seven whole seasons of it, plus 4 more from it's worthy sequel.
I wish Dave the best of luck, and hope that he not fall victim to any of Disney's poison.

Dragging it through the mud for lowly and despicable profit. No one will remember Star Wars for what it used to be. A cinematographic masterpiece of an Original Trilogy, made by the greatest generation of filmmakers that share my passion for creativity and storytelling. A decent Prequel Trilogy that despite of it's flaws, filled in the gaps of the Chosen One's Story and completed the circle. Finally, 40 years worth of expanded content spanning 25,000 years of LORE. No, instead they will only remember the absolute FLOP that is the Sequel Trilogy and what not to do with a beloved franchise.
