  • In this video, i teardown a ZF5HP19 out of a Porsche Boxster. This had the very common problem of the pump bushing spinning out and leaking from the front area of the transmission. This transmission is front wheel drive. Thanks for watching

    Thank you Gary,
    This has to be the best transmission teardown of the year. What an interesting way to integrate the differential.
    Merry Christmas to you and your family.

    Hi Gary, thanks for this video. i have to rebuild a 5hp19fla (audi) and there is no shops that do that transmission here where i live so i will do it myself (it will be my first auto rebuild). i just order all the overhaul kit, pump, valvebody overhaul kit too. But I would like to describe the symptoms to know if it is possible for you to guide me to what I need to pay attention to the most.when i bought the car, the change between gears were a little abrupt when cold and much more abrupt when hot. On a very hot day, after stopping for a few minutes, when leaving it was slipping in all the gears(this only happend once). So i drop the pan, change the oil and filter (there was a LOT of residue on magnets) and fit a transgo presure kit, after that all got worst, start getting the TQ converter lockup stuck off (i haven any codes before) and after a heavy throttle or long trips i have all gear slipping (even the car try to move but with no sucess) or hesistate when i try to start from a stop, like nothing,, a little bang or delay and then start to move..(when is no full slipping but is hot) and a big BANG dowshifting from 5 to 4 or 3rd (Always). when the trans is slipping i dont get any code (more than the TQ converter stuck off) but not limp or gear monitor.
    Sorry for the long text and my english but any advice would be very useful.
    Thank you very much!!

      is the trans apart, how is the pump and the pump bushing. you said you changed the filter, how long after you changed the filter did the car stop moving hot, your almost describing a clogged filter, possibly from the converter coming apart@@bymiki

      @@GaryFerraro Hi Gary, i didnt take the trans apart yet, i was waiting to get all the parts for the rebuild (is my daily). so i dont know how the pump is, but I order a new one. and how long after you changed the filter did the car stop moving hot.. like the first full throttle after warm up. i changed the fluid between the next 3 days, The oil was clean but very liquefied (or liquid, like water). I think it was a fake fluid (motul). with the new oil, it improve a bit, but after a heavy throttle, or like winding or mountainous roads, the things get bad really fast. Can a poor quality filter cause problems? thanks for your time!

    This was a really great video! @GaryFerraro, what parts of the 5HP19 tend to be the limiter on the amount of torque that they can handle? In other words, can they be built to handle quite a bit higher than factory power levels?

    I just finished a rebuild on a GMR 5hp19fl. I got the transmission installed but it doesn't engage any gears. It goes into gear it just doesn't lockup the clutches properly. I air checked all the clutches before I installed the valve body and they engaged firmly. I double checked that the shift linkage and selector were synchronize and they are. My suspicion is when I had the unit out I tried to remove the flow control valve but wasn't successful and I think I may have damaged it. I'm worried I may have to pull the unit out again and replace that flow control valve. When looking through the spare parts catalog I dont see that valve as a replacement part and think I may have to replace the whole intermediate plate and that would come with a new valve installed but I'm uncertain.
    I'm not sure what to do.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  2 роки тому

      Are you sure the converter went in all the way, maybe you broke the tabs off the pump

    • @gdc5ind
      @gdc5ind 2 роки тому

      @@GaryFerraro The transmission attached to the engine smoothly and bolting up the flex plate to the converter was smooth too. If the converter wasn't set all the way into the pump I think it would have been difficult to get the transmission to mate to the flex plate. Im sure it was installed properly. The converter is a reman Recon from TransStar.
      If I put the shifter in a gear it will turn the wheels if I apply a little throttle. I'm going to make sure the valve body pressure regulator is ok and if that checks out I will have to pull the trans back out again and check that stator pump piston. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I found the part number for that piston 1060310079 but I'm still not sure how to remove it. Should it just slide out? Do you know if I can buy the stator piston only or do I have to buy the whole intermediate plate?

    Excellent teardown video of a old tried and tested transmission by an unassuming and knowledgeable expert. Looking forward to the valve body video. Please if you could describe how the valve body actually works. After taking apart mine I realised that the design is an engineering marvel.
    Now to my issue on an A4 B5 2.8. On hard acceleration, the transmission does not go into limp mode but instead im no longer able to downshift on its own from 5th to 4th. I have to shift manually. Also slams into reverse. Did all the resistance test a on the different components and found the OSS resistance to be at 890 ohms instead of the 325 spec. Bought a new One, and still get same reading. Watched your video on the F clutch drum issue. Could it be this? Please advise.

      @@GaryFerraro I expect so as the driveshafts drive the rear wheels. Engine also resided in the rear if my technical information and memory serve. I cannot remember any front wheel drive posches, 4 wheel drive yes, rear wheel drive most certainly. In fact there were only a few models built with an engine in the front, albeit they drove the rear wheels too. The 1998 boxter is rear engine rear drive.

      Engine and gearbox is in the rear in a Boxster. It's not a front wheel drive...
      Some Porsche's (924, 944, 968 and 928) had the water-cooled engine in the front but even here the gearbox was at the rear (Transaxles).

      A Transaxle combines the transmission, differential, and ancillary systems around the axle into one integrated assembly. You will usually find transaxle configurations in cars where the engine is placed at the same end of the car as the drive wheels.
