    Gary, great video, Thanks so much.
    I would appreciate your thoughts on my Son's car which just went into limp mode. 2002 325ci. Drove to movie and all is well, leave movie and it's in limp mode. Before that, trans worked great. Now showing trans codes: 49 Gear Monitoring, 53 Gear Monitoring 3, 54 Gear Monitoring 4, and 114 Steptronic Switch. I did watch your full disassembly vid, and also the short one about "F" clutch and moved sleeve. Do the syptoms point to the "F" clutch issue? My thoughts are: Why all of a sudden with no warning? Now the trans is ALWAYS in limp mode (4th gear) - no shifting or even shift attempts. Could it be a sticky piston in the valve body. OR perhaps a bad solenoid? I did disconnect the battery to attempt a fresh start, but still in limp. Any thoughts?

    So I have two passats that started making that loud whining sound, and the engine stopped instantly when turned off. One of them I replaced the converter bushing and the converter seal, but you know what I did? I forgot to put that 4 sided pump washer back in. Still makes the same sound but not as bad. I assume the seal is now restricting flow to the shaft. Does that sound about right? Would like a definitive answer before I pull it all back apart. Thank you

    Gary, I have the same exact transmission in my 2006 BMW 330i e90 sedan with 208k miles on it and the only problem i really have is rough downshift from 2-1 occasionally. I am planning to replace all the solenoids and purchase the sonnax zip kit and rebuild the valvebody. Since my transmission seems to be in pretty good shape i am debating whether is should do a full rebuild of the transmission by replacing all the bushing (what you are doing in this video) and replace the clutch packs just as a preventative maintenance. Do you think im wasting money with replacing the clutch packs and bushings? I am not having any clutch slippage that i am aware of..

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro 6 років тому

      Ok, as far as the converter goes, there is a seal inside the converter that tears causing a converter code, the seal rides on the tip of the input shaft and seals converter apply oil. The 2-3 slip when hot, im thinking F clutch piston sleeve may have moved causing one of the 2 sealing rings to leak. When this sleeve moves you will get a slip in 3rd and or 4th only when hot.

    Hi Gary, I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. My project is a 2001 330i. It has a ZF 5hp19. I just rebuilt the engine and everything works great with no engine codes. The transmission seems to work properly also. I drove the car 100 miles then a leak developed. I took the trans out and am having a difficult time locating the leak. I believe it is the trans but am not sure because the fluid colors are similar between the engine and trans. I will know more once I remove the flywheel to inspect the rear main. This vehicle has 111,000 miles on it and I am going to rebuild the trans while I have it out as a precaution so I don't have to pull it again anytime soon. I am going to replace the following items. New pump, updated reverse drum, all gaskets, seals, molded pistons, frictions without steels, plastic pump tubes, updated Transgo regulator valve, updated f bushing which depends if I have the early or late style and torque converter. In your opinion, should i replace all the bronze bushings? How can I tell if I have an early or late style F bushing? Is there something I should replace that I haven't listed? Any advice on my project that will keep me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro 6 років тому

      These transmissions like to leak from the front, i would go with a new body and gears. I would also replace the F drum, the sleeve moves and will cause the trans to slip when hot. I would also go with a rebuilt converter. The bushings are generally ok, you may not have to change those. Go with an OE filter as well. The 3 main problem areas of this trans is the pump, F drum and the D/G drum(reverse). looks like you got everything else covered. Do you have a source for parts?

    • @Wipsplash
      @Wipsplash 6 років тому

      I am still looking for a source for the converter, rebuild kit and F drum. I also could use the selector shaft that hangs out the side for changing gears. I already purchased the pump, updated reverse drum and bushing kit. I am open to any source info. Thanks for advising me on my project.

    I'm hoping you can help me out. I've got a 2000 323Ci with the ZF5HP19. I replaced a broken reverse drum. After Replacing the drum trans worked but had a ticking noise. Found i left out a shim between the B and C clutches. Removed trans put the shim in and put everything back together. Ticking noise is gone away but, now I have 0 gears, no fluid flow through the trans cooler lines and a P0720 Stall monitoring code. I have taken the pump apart. gears look good and the teeth that engage the torque converter are not damaged. I'm at my whits end I can't find anything physically wrong with any of the parts. Other searches show me that the DTC has usually been the Output speed sensor. I get a reading of 265 ohms (book I have on the valve body 292 - 358 ohms is the limits) but the book also says the TSS should be the same but im getting over 6 Mohms. Even tried a new wiring harness and get the same readings with a new TSS and OSS. I'm not sure what could cause no flow when I know the pump is working..

    I am rebuilding a version of this trans. Audi 5hp19FLA Quattro.
    I am at the front transfer unit which houses 3 large meshing gears. One goes through the long shaft of the trans, and has a bearing and thick shim. Second has a shorter shaft and a big spring that goes on before the gear is placed on. my question is, the spring forces the gear to set higher up (1/2") than the other two gears. once you tighten the housing, does that force the gear into place by compressing the spring? also what is the torque for that housing screws.
    Thanks.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro Рік тому

      If this is a quattro, there are double seals in one of the gears and also in a housing, these seals will now leak, new ones need to be installed and if it's not perfect, it will leak. I send the housing and the gear out to a ZF shop to knock the seals in for me and when you slide the gear into place (the one that takes the double seal) put something over the spline like a finger of a rubber glove to protect the seal or it will leak, Very very important to do it that way. Where are you located? I believe i torque those housing bolts down to 15 to 20 foot pounds

      I see what you mean about the front drive shaft going through the double seal with having some protection , (latex finger) to protect the splines.
      With the three meshing gears on the back, am I correct that the one with the large spring makes the gear sit up higher than the other two and that by tightening it up, it compresses the spring? Over a 1/2" higher.

      @@GaryFerraro an Aha moment. I knew the spring was too far away to be compressed, so I looked for other things that might be in the way. On the inside of the trans is a plastic rotation sensor? It reads the points on a gear as it rotates. I undid the screw and took the sensor out and immediately the gear dropped down and there was just a little spring compression left upon tightening the front transfer case. That problem is solved. but that little black plastic sensor probably had a spacer in it so that it would just read the spinning gear, without that spacer, the sensor went too far in the hole and stopped the spinning gear from dropping down. Now I need a spacer. I guess I can measure and make one. wonder if you knew the thickness? Also, the double seal in the taller mesh gear, (ZF 0734319 604), I think that is the one you are referring to. where can one be purchased? I am getting close thanks to you.
