      Question? Can I put a ZF5HP19 in an E32 BMW 730i whose original is ZF4HP22? I bought one without a transmission.
      Please advise 🙏?

    Thanks buddy, I don't have words to express how thankful I am to you, now I dare to buy used BMWs, I love the car its just that, maintenance cost, they are so great car. Not many are willing to take that challenge.
    I am from Singapore, so cars are so expensive to own.

    Hi, you are just amazing. I admire your patience. And.....THANK YOU Thank You many times. I got the manuals and I am very mechanical. But your videos are what got me through this and decided to get back into BMW. Because...when they run...they do perform so nicely. So balanced. So fun. Again. THANK YOU. You a very talented teacher as well. Not sure what your back ground is....but....I don't think I ever found better videos for such projects.
    Here is my E46 story. Short version. Bought a 2002 330Ci with 188k miles knowing it had no reverse gear. Paid only $ 2,000. Considering the body is in perfect shape and the 1 owner car was maintained to perfection at a local BMW dealership can't loose much, right. In addition the previous owner already replaced about every hose and about every suspension part there is. Rides like new. ATTENTION: Rebuilt the transmission. Got a new oil pump of ebay. I didn't pay attention. Some Chinese crap. Saying something about 3 year warranty. Didn't even realize its Chinese. I found out they buy or gather the broken ones and rebuild them. Of course improperly. Guess what. I am in the process starting over. This time with a ZF OEM oil pump. But when you see that the convertible has a counter balancing battery mount to offset body vibrations you know...it is German engineered alright.
    Unfortunately Engine threw out a rod bearing. No idea why. It was very cold here in Chicago. May be that had some to do with it. So, replacement engine of eBay with only 72k miles going in. Does it ever end? Hope so. Spent more car working on this thing than anyone driving it. Literally. And it is more expensive than I thought. Liked the BMW feel after so many years of not having owned one. Got myself a 2008 M6 with 40k miles and that beautiful V10.

    Ik ben mecanicien en weet dat uit eigen ervaring dat je in sommige domeinen de nodige ervaring nodig hebt om tot een goed resultaat te komen. Gelukkig herbegin je bij tegenslag en blijf je kalm tot je een goed resultaat bekomt. Ik heb hier veel uit geleerd, en ik denk dat dit ook voor U hetzelfde is.
    Bedankt voor de video, en ook omdat je aangetoond hebt dat er toch iets mis kan gaan bij een herstelling. Doe zo voort.

    I really, really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. I'm rebuilding one now, I probably couldn't have done it without you. I was concerned when I saw you put the torque converter bushing at .002" clearance... because I put mine at .005-.006 as the bushing seller recommended (I'm a machinist so I did this myself). Kinda glad to see that yours failed lol, now I know .002 is not correct. Might be helpful to others if you added a notation to the earlier part of the video about the .002 failing and that you don't recommend rebuilding the pump (already did mine, so I'm forging ahead against your advice. wish me luck).

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid 7 років тому

      I wish I had the proper tools back then to measure the clearance. I just trusted the machine shop, which was a big mistake. I think the bushing distorted when they pressed it in. Should have gotten the "finish in place" bushing instead.

    I didn't see which side of the pump bushing got worn, but if it's asymmetrical like you showed, and it's worn the most on the bottom, you may also want to check your crankshaft bushings --- as those wear the crankshaft and torque converter drop lower and can start wearing out the pump bushing faster too.

    You're amazing. BMW needs to hire you to manage a North America BMW Museum...... You mention in your video you have extra footage that you didn't include. I would love to see the removal and installation using your brand new transmission jack. It sounds like it was still a challenge based on your final thoughts. How do ensure the torque converter doesn't drop during installation or re installation? The Bently manual references a tool to keep in place.....Congratulations for this feat and never giving up!

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid 8 років тому

      +TonyS Haha, thanks. The extra footage is for the valve body which followed this video. There is a link in the description. The installation and removal of the transmission is covered in my rear main seal videos, also link in description. The torque converter doesn't fall out because the transmission is sitting back at a slight angle. The tool mentioned by the Bentley manual is really used for protection during shipping.

    I just posted a comment and I can't see it now. Not sure what happened. Anyways great and inspiring work. Excellent job.
    One question: Did you do all that work in your little one-car garage? How many floor jacks did you use? Is there a video showing how you jacked up and leveled the car?
    Thanks

    Great Videos and I am seriously thinking about taking this on; but I have a couple of questions. 1. What type of floor jacks are you using (3 ton) and how much clearance are you creating? Question 2. Would it be possible to list the number of hours your different projects take? Thanks for great tutorials!!!

      I used 2 ton jacks and it's not possible to get the car high enough--you have to slide the trans off your jack, period.

    What is the function of the square looking spacer between the pump bush bearing and the oil seal at 4:26 in the video? I guess it is to resist the oil stream (passing through the brushing) directly hitting the seal causing leak.
    Edited: Its function is to support the heavy TC from sagging to avoid damaging the bush bearing and deforming the shaft seal during the time when the tranny is not yet installed (after installed, the TC pilot pin is supported by the center hole of the flex plate and the "washer" is become useless after that).

    Grandson’s 1999 Porsche Boxster with the ZF 5hp rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. Front seal fell out. Bushing and toque converter good. Replaced seal fell (pushed) out again after 50 miles, pulled pump front clutches and pump looked new. New o-rings and seals after 50 miles transmission fluid under car cleaned up drove 10 miles and no leaks, drove 20 miles and fluid out of seal. Vent tube and hole between seal and bushing clear.
    Any ideas ?
