  • Discover how to test a sprinkler valve solenoid, specifically focusing on the Hunter PGV model. Here I guide you through the step-by-step process and provide crucial insights into identifying a good solenoid.
Hunter valves are renowned for their standardized solenoids, offering consistency across various valve styles and models. This simplifies troubleshooting your Hunter sprinkler systems, as you only need to carry one type of solenoid for all Hunter valves and you will learn here what all good Hunter sprinkler valve solenoids will test out to be.
To begin testing the solenoid at the valve, follow these simple instructions: cut the wires' splices to access the solenoid wires directly. Then, strip back the wires and prepare them for testing with a multimeter. I'll demonstrate how to securely connect the multimeter leads to the solenoid wires, ensuring accurate readings.
Watch closely as I reveal the optimal resistance number for a good Hunter solenoid-23 ohms. This precise figure serves as a reliable benchmark when testing your Hunter valves. With a clear understanding of what constitutes a good solenoid, you can confidently tackle any electrical troubleshooting tasks with ease.

I remember the Hunter rep telling me: 0-10 was short, 10-20 somethings wrong, 20-60 is good and over 60 is an open circuit. Another helpful video Kelly.

Thanks for the info. That is very helpful. That makes sense because when I tested one yesterday at a house it was about 30 and it was good.
